Title: Walter Grinter (1890) - census look-up please.
Post by: Phil Goater on Thursday 07 August 08 16:38 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm interested to find the parents of Walter Grinter whose birth was registered in Swansea in 1890. I'd also be interested to find out about the family of Leah Baker whose birth was registered in Swansea in 1892.

Regards,
Phil

Thank you Cat - it's what I suspected and hoped for. Could you look at the lodgers again and tell me if the 'W' could be a 'D'? Were they born in Long Load or thereabouts as well? I know Walter senior had a younger sister Elizabeth who married Arthur Dight.
I'd also be grateful for any sign of Leah Baker(1892) in the 1901 census.

Regards,
Phil

Many thanks Chris. It looks like a whole generation upped sticks from Somerset to find their fortune in Swansea! It must have had a significant impact on the population of Long Load!
Is there any chance of seeing Walter's family in the 1901 census? I'm looking for clues as to the maiden name of his wife.

Cheers,
Phil

Many thanks Cas - the  distant relations of my wife are becoming more and more numerous! (I trust that should be Walter as head of the family?)
I managed to find Walter's wife's name on freebmd so is it possible to locate the Ann Bevan who married him with her parents prior to marrying him?

Regards,
Phil

Thanks Cas, I will be surprised if you can sort this one out though. Ann and Walter married in Swansea in the june quarter of 1880. There were quite a few girls with the name Ann Bevan getting married in Swansea around about that date!

Your right Phil, have only got a Anna Bevan b 1857 in 1861  Swansea, parents William & Elizabeth.

1871 none b Swansea, but 2 possible same age., think you need the marriage cert before you can track her for sure.  Otherwise just spec...

Hi Ozgypsy, welcome to rootschat  :)

This is the only marriage with these names on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Dec 1893

Grinter  Caroline    Taunton  5c 603
Handford  Annie Elizabeth     Taunton  5c 603
Palmer  John     Taunton  5c 603
Quick  William Edward     Taunton  5c 603

Looked at your first post, where you name your grandmother, do you have an age for her, would these details fit?

1901- RG13 Piece 2278 Folio 21 Page 34
Court 11, 6 High St, Taunton, Somerset
Reg district: Taunton

Caroline Palmer 28  head, married, on soldier pay, West Buckland Somerset
Violet Palmer 3 dau, Taunton Somerset
Lilian Palmer 1  dau, Taunton, Somerset
Rose Beck 20, boarder, single, weaver silk factory, Taunton

1891 - RG12 Piece 1878 Folio 14 Page 22
There is a Caroline Grinter age 18 born West Buckland, with parents George & Martha in Rowbarton, Somerset, and a number of siblings.

Next door to Caroline in 1901 is a William Palmer age 28 & family who could be a possible bro in law.  There is a family in 1891 that would fit, with a brother John b 1877 West Buckland, RG12 Piece 1871 Folio 30 Page 12

If you think these are the correct ones, start a thread on the Somerset board, with what info you know, someone will post details for you.

Hi Sue,

I can't help thinking that your Caroline must be from the 'Mulcheney' line. Have a look at:
http://www.grintertrees.fsnet.co.uk/index.html  There are two Grinter boys who were the sons of John Trott Grinter who married Palmer girls and emigrated to Australia. One of them, Charles, had an eldest child called  Caroline b.1864 who is recorded as dying in 1877 who obviously isn't your girl but proves it was a family name.

Regards,
Phil

Thank you all so much! I am amazed you have such great researching skills! Caroline Grinter had two daughters Lillian and Violet so it looks like you have found her. This is great now I can look at where she came from and John Palmer. Thanks again.

Hi Sue,

You can view the 1881 census for Caroline Grinter b.West Buckland on the Familysearch site. That entry includes her grandmother Caroline. I think you will also find this site of great interest:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/WestBuckland/WBMar.html
That reveals that Caroline's father George married Martha Hewings daughter of William on26/5/1872 and that his Dad's name was Simon.

Have fun.

Bingo!!!

Welcome Sue to the extended Grinter family originating from Muchelney - you are a sixth cousin of my wife!!!

If you look at the grintertrees site you will find your Caroline in the list of names as Caroline Grenter 1872. Click on her name and it will open up her tree. Her line goes back through George, Simeon, John, Robert to Joseph Grinter c.1710 who is my wife's ancestor.

I wish somebody had done all this for my surname!!!

Best wishes,
Phil
