My Great grandfather Moved from Abingdon area (then Berkshire now Oxon) during the 1880s with his young wife (that is married at 16 and producing babes every 18 months)
His name was Frederick HUTCHINS and I have a record of his death at Tyrphil in 1912 of influenza resulting in bronchial pneumonia.
I cannot find any record of his wifes ELLEN M Hutchins( b1859 Drayton Berks) death and would like to find out .
They had a lot of children including my grandfather JAMES b1890 all registered Pontlottyn but I have searched the Ancestry death records in vain and cannot find any record. they had a lot of children who only survived days and I wonder if she died in childbirth
She was alive in 1901 census along with these children
James 1890
Harriet 1877
Frederick 1878
Wyndham 1896
Naomi 1897
Emily 1888
Annie 1885
Mary 1884
Nellie 1885
Any help would be gratefully received

just a thought, do you know where Frederick was buried, maybe others are named on the stone?
-
I have his death certificate but I may have to go to Tir phyl gelligaer to find his gravestone if the family could afford a stone that is
That will not be till the summer as my old bones suffer in this cold weather making it difficult to walk far

St Tyfaelog district shown on census is this a church with a graveyard
-
Hi Colin
St. Tyfaelog is the parish church at Pontlottyn but sadly there is no graveyard. In 1912, it would have been the old churches of Rhymney or Bedwellty that catered for the valley dead, some poor old souls had a fair journey.
There are two burial places to check in Rhymney. The parish church of St. David, [I have made a search of burial indexes but sadly no Hutchins buried there]
The other is Rhymney Cemetery. Caerphilly Council are responsible for this one. If you live nearby then you can apply to the council offices and request a search of the burial registers. You can contact them at publicservices@caerphilly.gov.uk
Hope this is of help
regards

Gelligear is not in Pontlottyn. It may have been in the parish then, but not anymore. It is village about 10 miles further down the Valley. There is a Railway Terrace in Fochriw, and this would come under Pontlottyn.
There is also a Railway Terrace in Tirphil and in Brithdir.
However, there is still a small graveyard in Pontlottyn, situated on Farm Road, and I think there might be some stones about 200 yards away, behind Chappel Street. There are also some stones on top of the mountain, to the right of Tirphil, but this is only viable with a 4x4.
Assuming this person lived in Tirphil, Brithdir, Phillipstown or New Tredegar at the time of their death, they could be buried in Brithdir or Bedwellty cemetry. I wouldn't think they were buried in St Davids Church Rhymney, as this is a different parish. However, there are 2 other Cems in Rhymney. These are Carno and The Graig. I think the Graigs headstones have just been bulldozed by an unscrupolous property developer though.
I have probably confused you even more now...

I agree with D.T. to a point, Pontlottyn was in the hamlet of Brithdir which was one of five hamlets that made up the parish of Gelligaer. Brithdir being the largest was also split into districts. Today they are seperate villages, all under the Caerphilly County Borough.
I wouldn't think he resided at Fochriw or Brithdir if his death record states Tirphil. It is worth giving Caerphilly Council a phone call or letter, they will search the burial records. Brithdir cemetery is about a twenty-minute drive away for me so If he is buried in Brithdir I can easily check it out if location is known.

Hi Roy,
I based my thoughts on the house address, in that Gelligaer came before Pontlottyn on the address. Pontlottyn has a Station Row, but not a Railway Terrace. Although, there could have been a Railway Terrace in the past.
I live in Pontlottyn, and now our address is Pontlottyn, Bargoed , Caerphilly. This is confusing for anyone, especially when we get a delivery.
I think your suggestion to check with CCBC is a good place to start. Assuming the records were archived responsibly over the changes.
Rhymney Valley District Council took over from the older authorities of Gelligaer Urban District Council, and then in 1996, Rhymney Valley District Council was amalgamated with Islwyn Borough Council to form Caerphilly County Borough.

Hi DT
It can get confusing for those who do not live in this part of the country. Although I live in Caerphilly, I regard myself a 'Brithdir boy' being raised there. My mother's side of the family Edwards & Brewers were from Rhymney/Pontlottyn and like yourself, it is far easier when you know the terrority.
I found the staff at Caerphilly Council very obliging so it makes since to start there.
Nice 'talking' to you
Roy
