Post by: freya on Wednesday 06 August 08 01:49 BST (UK)
Hi, would someone take a look at the above census for Wilfred S Skeats b 1864 - where? He is with his wife Florence J and quite a lot of kids. Critical thing is where born but anything appreciated.

Hello Freya,
It appears in looking at the records I possibly found his son, the 8 yr. old in the 1910
census, as having been born in Newton, (Middlesex County) Massachusetts. It was written on a passenger record for him when he sailed to Canada at one time. The birth date on the manifest
matched up with this Social Security Death Index ...

Name: Wilfred Skeats
SSN: 166-07-2138
Last Residence: 19050  Lansdowne, Delaware, Pennsylvania, USA
Born: 14 Dec 1901
Died: Dec 1972
State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

You could do a couple of things with this information. You can ask for somebody
to do a lookup for you of this son's birth record. There is a database called
"Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910". It can be accessed if someone has a
subscription to:
New England Historic Genealogical Society
http://www.newenglandancestors.org/

Hopefully there is a full record showing so that the name and birthplace of his parents
are listed on his birth certificate.

The other possibility is to write for a copy of his Social Security card application. Again,
it would be hoped that he wrote down the full name of his Father's birth place on that
application.

Hope this helps.
K.

Looking at both the 1910 and 1920 census, Wilfred appears to have been born in England.  With that information, going to www.rootsweb.com, you can access the English FreeBMD indexes.  On it, there appears a Wilfred Stradling Skeats, born in the June Quarter of 1864 in Croydon District, which stradles parts of Greater London, Kent, and Surrey.  Someone from the UK could probably explain this a bit better.  Your next step would be to request a lookup on the UK censuses for 1901, 1891, back.  Hope this helps.---Genealiza

Strangely enough, Wilfred Stradling Skeats was my grandfather. He was indeed born in Croyden, Surrey England in 1864, the son of Herbert S. Skeats and Louisa Miall. He emigrated to Canada sometime in the 1880's (though I don't have any record of that date and would love to have more information if anyone has it), Married Florence Isabelle Chapman of Toronto, came then to the US. He was the father of six children, the oldest of whom was Wilfred Francis Skeats, as Miss Kate discovered. His other children were Margery, Helen, Alfred, John and Mary, now all deceased.  He died in 1934.
