Hi,
I have an Owen Jones in my family with a place of abode of Brunswick Vaults, Upper Bangor. This would have been around 1879-80. He's listed on the Bangor Polling District List. He also owned property on Dean Street.
Does anyone know where Brunswick Vaults is? I've searched old Bangor maps to no avail.
Thanks for any direction here!

Hi Carol
When I was in collage in Bangor we used to drink at a pub called The Vaults in Upper Bangor - I think it is now called Paddy's bar!! It is situated on the left between the turnings off the A5 of Albert street and Victoria street.
I dont know if this is the same one as the Vaults you are looking for.

If Patricks bar turns out to be the right place for you here is their website:
http://www.patricksbar.com/
It shows a few pics of the building that may interest you.

I will check into that, not sure where to start, though. Maybe I need to find the history of Patricks Bar.
The funny thing about it is that I log on to Patricksbar.com everyday and look via the webcam wishing I was there! I must visit Patricks if I ever get over there. I even thought I'd call someone to get a 'printscreen' of me looking up at the webcam!

I have, actually, a very nice person (Matthew) has been very generous with his time in helping me navigate around that site to find what I need.
I think the 'Brunswick' name is really throwing me off - I cannot find anything remotely related to the name. But 'Vaults' is a name used in several places in Bangor. So was this Brunswick Vaults in Upper Bangor a hotel? A bar with rooms? I don't know. But I think I'm catching on that 'vaults' is a quaint way of saying 'rooms'.
I think what is really throwing me off, is why would someone who owns a house in Bangor have his 'place of abode' listed as Brunswick Vaults? Maybe I need to look in a different direction - I just stumbled upon this information and don't know what Owen Jones was really doing at the time. Moving maybe? Hmmm.... he was a plumber, maybe he was using the Dean Street house as a business? The Jones family lived there for many, many years, at least since the 1830's.
I've recently found out that the original Dean Street houses were demolished and the area was resized and rebuilt in the 1930's. I was crushed to read that.

Hi Carol
In 1889 Sutton's Trade Directory, under listing for TAVERNS:
Brunswick, William Whittaker, 13 Holyhead Road, Upper Bangor
A couple of my connections from Bangor ran pubs/taverns in Hirael during the 1860s-1880s, the Nelson Tavern and the Ship Launch Inn. My understanding is that sometimes the establishments were called vaults because many were either located below ground or they kept the hard stuff locked up in the cellar!! A lot of the taverns also had a couple of rooms for occasional boarders etc.
If you don't have it already, the North Wales Trade Directory CD produced by the Clwyd FHS is a wonderful resource available for purchase online through Genfair.

Thanks Heather! That's great information.
I'm sitting here tonight going over my Jones line. Happily, they were all tradesmen so the information is more easily found.
I'll be sure to post my results soon. Hopefully soon. I'm sure you know how that goes.

There is no Brunswick Vaults listed in Slater's Directory for 1880, but there is an Owen Jones listed at the Manchester Vaults, 15 Holyhead Road, Upper Bangor.
-
I found Brunswick Vaults in Slater's 1868 Directory, Worral's 1874 Directory, and Slater's 1895 Directory.
But clearly I have more work to do. I'm very confused. Thanks for all your help, I think it has me finally looking in the right direction.
-
Carol,
Don't forget that not everybody were in the directories as they had to pay a fee to be included. Many didn't bother, so it is not uncommon for there to be gaps.
Another thought. They have the licensing records at the Record Office in Caernarfon. There are licence registers and Petty Sessions papers which might be of help to you.

i think 15 Holyhead Road would make sense with whats know called Paddys. it used to be called the Vaults and might be under Victoria St due to the face that there used to be an entrance onto that street also?
-
Sorry Patricks would be a nice fit but...
15 Holyhead Road is a shop called Dimensions now (which sells hippy nuts and seeds and potions)... if you go here http://www.bangorcivicsociety.org.uk/pages/towntours/09_9.htm you can see the shop 5 clicks to the right.
Patricks was built 1854> and numbers 57-59 today

Well, it's been a while. I put my research aside for a bit because sometimes it helps me get a better perspective on things if I pick it up fresh. I think in about a month or so I will start actively pursuing this again. But, I have been watching this thread with great interest and get excited when I receive an email that someone posted.
This Brunswick Vaults lead will be the first thing I attempt to figure out and I'll be sure to post it here if I do!

I think the Vaults were formerly known as the Menai Vaults (don't know since when).
Pinot :)
i.e. the Vaults Sharon describes

Menai Vaults sounds familiar from when I was in Bangor in the late 1960s.

found recently Brunswick Buildings in Caernarfon. now not sure but think they might be on whats called Bangod Rd in the town. Could there have been a mix up between Brunswick Vaults Bangor Rd,Caernarfon?
-
Brunswick Buildings were on Castle Square. They used to house the offices and printing works of the Caernarfon & Denbigh Herald until they burnt down in January 1984.
-
I don't know if anyone is still interested in the location of the Brunswick Vaults after all these years, but I have a simple blog on lost pubs – www.bygoneboozers.co.uk – and have been digging into this place for a possible future post.
It was at 15 Holyhead Road, currently the location of Dimensions. It is marked on the OS Town Plan of 1888 and I have a picture of it when a John Gregson was licensee around 1895. I will attempt to attach these images to the post.

Stewart

Belle Vue is still there
Patricks Bar may have been Four Crosses
The Greek restaurant was where the arch for the stables were accessed through of The Manchester Arms
The Brunswick Vaults were opposite.

Patrick's was the Menai Vaults and even earlier was the Menai Stores and is labelled as such on the 1899 Town Plan. In 1901 it was being run by Scotsman Gregor Grant.
The Four Crosses must have been on the same side of Holyhead Road as the Belle View as the two sides were in different enumeration districts in 1901.
