I have tried many different searches for my Rothwell family before 1841, and am not having much success, i can find nothing on online Parish clerks and only sparce info on family search and am getting a bit frustrated. i live in New Zealand so personal searches in record offices are impossible so I can only rely on online resources. Can anyone recommend where I could find any more info or does anyone have access to parish records in this area?
My GGGGrandfather was Joseph Rothwell born about 1795 in Newton Heath ? Manchester he married Sarah ? in about 1820 but not sure where.
I have a record of a Josiah Rothwell christened in 1822 with Joseph and Sarah parents at Cathedral, Manchester. does not appear on any future census.
Richard, my GGGrandfather was born about 1834 in Middleton, but cannot find his details on family search IGI at all.
Elizabeth born 1826, according to IGI christened at Cathedral, Manchester but appears on 1841 as only 5 yrs old.
Rachel born 1840 and christened 1840 and also on Census.
There is a Sarah born circa 1829 on the 1841 but no record of birth anywhere and margaret born 1827 ish
Joseph was a Madder dyer.
In 1851 Joseph/Sarah/Richard/Elizabeth and rachel are alone in a house in Heywood. Heap.
Can anyone please help make any sense of this family? Thank you for looking.

Thanks again

Hi
You mention Joshia christened in 1822 alongside Elizabeth in 1826 Manchester Cathedral parents
Joseph Rothwell & mother Sarah
How do you know these were the children of YOUR Joseph & Sarah ?
There are a couple of other Joseph Rothwell to a wife Sarah on the 1841 who could have been parents to the above.?
-
I agree with Judi - that Elizabeth b 1826 is either not yours or she could have died and they later named another child after her.
Judi has some good information there for Elizabeth which could be followed up.
You could get Rachel's birth certificate- she is the only one born after 1837- that would tell you Sarah's name at least.
There are possible deaths for Margaret Rothwell in Salford and possible marriages for Sarah. Unfortunately, it is a common name. My Rothwells are from Heap originally.
best wishes
heywood

No my Richard was in Paisley in Scotland during 1881 he became a boilermaker, rather than work in the mills.....but thank you.
Thanks for going to the trouble of posting all that info, very useful. I would agree that josiah was probably a long shot and I have no other evidence yet that he is connected to the rest of the family so more work needed there. Elizabeth's birth appears only in 1826 so assumed this was maybe the right one and she died or not correct and my Elizabeth like Richard cannot be found in the parish records as a birth or christening just yet.
I really need to find Joseph's and Sarah's Marriage and then maybe able to rule them out on date.
Their son Richard went on to be part of The boilermakers union in Lancs and then Paisley in Scotland and finally Stockton on tees - where my grandad was born (Edwin Rothwell) 1903.
Only just started researching this side of my mothers family this year, and hadn't appreciated how prevalent Rothwells were. Thanks all for your help, and if you others researching Rothwells find any connection to my Joseph and Sarah family, I would love to know. Thanks Sarah

I see a coincidence in this thread re my own heritage that I thought I'd ask you about. I have a great great grandfather, an Edwin Rothwell who I believe might've been an orphan, born in 1845 in Rochdale, and raised by an aunt and uncle who were Cleggs. I've written a new post re my query here.: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=883393.new;topicseen#new Please respond to that post if you have ANY relevant info. re Edwin. Thank you!
