Trying to find any information on Lewis Foley who appears as a witness on our ancestor's marriage certificate at St Joseph's Church Launceston in 1854. I believe Lewis may be a brother to the bride, Mary Foley therefore he would have been born in County Cork, possibly at Lyradane, Grenagh Parish.
Another Mary Foley was the other witness, possibly Lewis' wife??
Mary (the bride) & her brother Denis arrived in Launceston in 1853 from Ireland, they both travelled with their spouses to Victoria in 1854. I can't find Lewis in Victoria's records although there is one listed in NSW records as having travelled from Brisbane to Sydney in 1879.
Denis Foley did work on a dairy farm at Deloraine for a year before he left for Melbourne.

Hi,
Please could you tell us the parents' names for Lewis, Denis and Mary.
Also, are the given names you have listed complete as far as you know? No second given names? :D

Hi Sue,
No second names that I know of but the parents were Timothy Foley & Elizabeth A'Hearn (variations on the spelling of her surname).
Lewis was witness at the marriage of Bartholomew Cashman to Mary Foley, she was the sister of Denis. Fairly sure Denis' wife, Margaret, was a sister to Bartholomew but her death cert doesn't show parent's names.
I think the other witness, also Mary Foley, may be Lewis' wife. Just a hunch.
Denis was born circa 1805, the next known sibling was born circa 1818, so I think there are a few siblings in the middle there somewhere.
thank you

Hi Debra,
No luck with Lewis, but I did find the following info, in case you don't have access to these CDs:
Death: Timothy Foley, son of Timothy Foley and Elizabeth Aheran, died 1859, aged 24, born Cork, death registered Victoria 1859/244.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]
Death: Timothy Foley, aged 41, died 1873, parents Louis and Ann Foley, born "Lime" (Limerick?), death registered Victoria 1873/3205.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]
Death: Ann Foley, daur of Timothy Foley and Elizabeth Ahern, died 1855, aged 24, born Cork, death registered Victoria 1855/2450.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]
Marriage: Mary Foley, aged 27, married Bartholomew Cashman, aged 38, 18 Jan 1854 in Tasmania, 1854/998.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index] The Tasmanian Pioneer Index says they were married in Launceston 998/1854 RGD37.
Denis Foley, aged 35, died 4 Oct 1853 at Tasmania, 1853/133.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index] The Tasmanian Pioneer Index says he died Westbury 133/1853 RGD35.
There appear to have been three or four couples in Tasmania with families with the last name Foley. The names Timothy and Denis appear mostly in Victoria Foleys however (just a quick observation of mine, not scientific fact, so you will have to check yourself).
Hope something there helps. Good luck with your research.

Hi Monica,
Those belonging to Timothy & Elizabeth (A'Hearn) are our greatx3 grandparents, so I have those but I didn't have the Timothy who died 1873, son of Louis. Now he is interesting and I'll be getting his death cert to see if I can find any thing else about him. Thank you for that one.
We just found the marriages for Mary & Bartholomew in Tassie & discovered they were entered as Caskman on the trip from Launceston to Hobart. Found that yesterday & there are no Caskmans in Victorian VPI so must be Cashman. The Denis in Tassie, I don't have & the family did spell it that way, with one "n" right down the tree, so could be a cousin of our Denis. I think one of my documents for a confirmed Foley says Limerick too & I'm told if they lived near the border of two counties people could be entered in either, guess it depended on which Church you attended?
You are right about the Victorian Denis & Timothy - probably all ours, they tended to use the names quite a lot down the tree.
Thank you, you have been most helpful.
bye

I forgot to include that the only birth that clearly states Margaret Cashman as the mother is Eliza b. 1854 Victoria. I thought the rest are likely for this couple when one of the children christened at Illawarra had the name Bartholomew!

Can stop looking. Have discovered through signatures on other documents that Lewis Foley is in fact Denis Foley. He wrote his "D" in the old Irish style which looks very much like an "L".
Thanks everyone for your help.

My Foley family also came from Cork. My grandfather Denis Foley was born 1889 in Poplar, London. His father Thomas was born London Middlesex about 1860. I have been unable to find his birth cert. His father Michael Foley born around 1820 in Cork, Ireland. On the census he is with his wife Mary ? also born Cork Ireland. I have my family from there down but would like some help going backwards. Another given name that runs through our Foley family is Maurice. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you.
