Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has any information on Hannah Doris Kelly, born in the Isle of Man around 1904.
She married a McGovern, and she died in Scotland in 1992, age 88.
According to my mum, her father was the mayor of the Isle of Man at one time, but not sure if this is accuarate or not.
Any information would really be appreciated!
Thanks,
Anne

Hi Anne,
A Mayor of the Borough of Douglas in 1918/1920 was John KELLY, then 1920/22 was Alderman Thomas Gilbert KELLY. Please see www.isle-of-man.com
They have information on both of these.
In 1901 Thomas G KELLY is married to a Hannah, and they have a son Gilbert age 1. RG13/5305/36 page 22. If you would like this transcribed if you think they are likely to be Hannah's family then no problem.
Best wishes, haliared

Sorry should have said search for mayors to find them on that website.

Hi Haliared,
That certainly sounds promising. That would be great if you could send me a transcription - I would certainly appreciate it!
You wouldn't know if there is any way I can check if she was married on the IOM, would you?
Thanks for your help,
Anne

Hi Anne,
RG13/5305/36 page 22
Bridge Inn, 8 & 9 North Quay, Douglas, Isle of Man
Thomas G KELLY, Head, Married, age 36, licensed victualler, own account, working at home, born Lancashire, England, language spoken English
Hannah KELLY, wife, married, age 23, born Salford, England, language spoken English
Gilbert KELLY, son, age 1, born Isle of Man, Douglas
Unfortunately I cannot seem to find IOM birth records very easily, or marriage records. I have tried to look at the 'official' Isle of Man website for BMD and find it completely confusing and unhelpful ???, I think they will only let you have a certificate if you go there! Maybe I'm just not looking clearly.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,
Best wishes, haliared

Thanks so much for that Haliared - it gives me something to go on.
I tried to find her marriage on Scotland's People ( the McGovern she married was Scottish) but as I couldn't find it there, I thought she might have been married on the IOM.
I'll keep trying to see if I can find out any more information.
Thanks for your help - really appreciate it!

Hi all, Just thought I'd let you know that I got Hannah Doris Kelly's death certificate in the mail yesterday - and her father was Thomas Gilbert Kelly, who was indeed the Mayor of the Isle of Man!
Appreciate the help :) :)
-
he was mayor of Douglas which much as the Council might wish, is not yet the sum total of the Isle of Man - the role & title of mayor together with Aldermen etc, was an english concept adopted by the newly created Douglas Borough in late 19th C which has no real Manx history - elsewhere elected local reps are called Commissioners.

Brilliant Anne,
It's so nice to see it all come together, and now, from the mayor link posted previously, we know what he looks like and can put a face to the name ! It also says that he was a son of John J KELLY, a builder of Douglas, although Thomas was born in Bolton. Don't forget the cousin of Thomas, Mr. W Kelly, who had his business on the Bridge, Douglas-lots for you to find! :)
Happy hunting, and very best wishes, haliared.

Thanks for the clarification Fraces_mnb - I appreciate that.
Yes, Haliared, it's not often that you actually get to see a photo of someone you are researching, it is really nice!
A big thanks to both of you for your help :)

Are you researching her because she is related to you? My Mum is interested in getting in contact with her long lost relatives too. She is Aunty Doris's niece.

Hi Cherylged,
Good to hear from you - looks like we have a kind of connection!
Hannah Doris Kelly was married to Hugh Francis McGovern, and they had a daughter Hannah. Hannah and my mum were cousins. Hugh Francis and my grandfather were brothers.
I'll send you a pm and maybe we can exchange some information!
