Title: Petty Family Atherstone
Post by: reeve99 on Tuesday 05 August 08 00:46 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone

Wondering if anyone can help with a branch of my tree.

I have a Charles Petty born about 1816 in Atherstone.  Looking for siblings please.

Also his parents are Thomas Petty born about 1785 and Ann born about 1782 both in Atherstone.  Any help on these would also be appreciated and also on their parentage and Ann's maiden name.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Anna

Only 1 birth:
Mary Petty b.1/6/1837/ch.24/5/1857/fa.Thomas/ma.Ann.
The Atherstone records start at 1825.If memory serves prior to this another Parish was used.I'll have a look.

The Parish used prior to Atherstone was Mancetter.
There is another child Joseph ch.31/7/1825/Mancetter/fa.Thomas/ma.Ann.
The only Charles I can find is to Thomas & Sarah ch.20/2/1814/Mancetter.
It could be Thomas was married twice.
Also found this marriage:
Thomas Petty=Ann Moreton/11/8/1823/Mancetter.

The Thomas Sue gave you was married to Sarah. This is the father of Charles.
This is a different family to that of Thomas & Ann.
Thomas & Sarah's youngest child was born after Thomas & Ann's marriage.
I cannot find a Charles born to Thomas & Ann.

I think Sarah & Ann (on the census) are the same person.
Thomas & Ann (Moreton) are a different couple.

Edit:
the 1851 census also has Charles 35 widower.
The only marriage to a Sarah is in Burton-on Trent (abt.15mls. away) in 1807.this is the year their oldest child was born.Let me know if you want the other children.

Hi everyone and thanks for all the help.

I have to say that this branch of my tree, I've only started working on since Friday so I am awaiting certificates for the more recent events but just thought I'd try my luck and push on a bit further with a bit of educated guesswork initially until things were confirmed.

The 1841 census (HO 107/601/6 page 15) started me off as Caroline Petty is listed aged 2 with Mary aged 5, Mary aged 25 and Charles aged 25.  This is in Hinckley Leicestershire and she later went on to marry John Petty at least 25 years her senior.  The marriage only lasted 3 years before he popped his clogs and she went on to marry Thomas Smith.  I do wonder if Charles Petty and Mary married in Hinckley or in Atherstone.  Perhaps that is why there is a problem finding a marriage.  I'll ask on the Leicestershire board as they have been very helpful too.

Anyway on the 1851 census she is living in Atherstone with her father Charles (widower) aged 35, and what I assumed (maybe wrongly) her grandparents (Thomas and Ann Petty) as Charles is listed as "son" (HO107/2064/271 pg 32).

I suppose that Ann may not be Charles mother and that his father remarried at some point.

I think the trail continues .......

Anna

I'm still a little confused over Charles Parentage.  Is it Thomas and Ann who is also known as Sarah and if so what was her maiden name?  Are there any marriage details?

Hello Anna
It was quite common for a person to be known by another name & use both for different events. In your case you're fortunate to have the parents living with children indicated on the censuses,so you know Sarah was known as Ann,Sarah being her birth name.
I can find only one marriage for Thomas to Sarah Plant/10/8/1807/Burton - on - Trent/Staffs.Sarah(Ann) states on the census that she was born in Atherstone so is unlikely to be her.
