Hello Adam,

Many, many thanks for that information, it is really helpful. I am having difficulties with the Carr/Lee side and that gives me some very helpful information to test.

I have far more information about the Hodgsons. I am looking for:

1. Jacob and Elizabeth Hodgson and family. Jacob was born c1816 and died between 1871 and 1881 (possibly 1876?) whilst Elizabeth was born c1825 and died between 1861 and 1871. All the census records for 1851-1871 (Jacob only) show them living in Willington though neither was born there. The children that I have records of were born between 1847-1860.

2. William Thompson Hodgson (the son of Jacob and Elizabeth) and his wife Mary Jane. They lived in Willington, Cornsay and then Crook from about 1886 onwards. My grandmother has photos of the graves of William and Mary Jane themselves in 'Billy Row cemetery' (a church on a hill surrounded by countryside - possibly St Thomas, Stanley?) but they had many children - some of whom died in childhood - between 1871-1899 and only a couple are buried with them. In particular, I think Jacob died in Crook (c1874-c1886).

Many many thanks for your kind help,

Hello Tom. Here is one inscription for Willington.

In memory of Jacob Hodgson of Cornsay, who died August/8/1876 aged 60 years.
Also Elizabeth, wife of the above who died at Willington May/26/1862? aged 45 years.
Seeing that the dates are around the same time and not spread out from the mid 1800's-- mid 1900's I will post them all.
You can then sort out the details.
The church at Stanley, Crook is St Thomas but their is only one readable stone and that is only a kerb stone for a William killed in the first world war.

Hi Adam,

Many thanks for those, that is fantastic. I'm almost certain that those are the people that I am looking for (although Elizabeth is slightly older that I thought she was). If you do have an more around the right dates then  Iwould be very grateful. The record in Stanley sounds right too (their son William was killed on the first day of the Somme).

Many thanks again for your generous information,

Hello Nige. I do not do look ups like you requested because it gets confusing.
I do have a backlog at the moment.
If you look at the first posting on each subject to see if the surname is there, and then request it on the appropriate subject  (ie Willington, Wolsingham, Lanchester etc I can then do it for you.
This method also works for the person requesting the look up if they want to go back to any particular request.

could you possible post the Armstrong and Philipson details for Crook. Since they are common names I know most will not be my ancestors but I'm still hoping to track down my missing relatives, sadly I can only get up to Weardale about once a year so its a slow process.

Hello Ceebees. Like all the other Dr's and Surgeons gravestones in the area ie
West Auckland, Wolsingham Lanchester, it was a large  stone.
I do not keep records/plans of the stones but it will be in the older part of the cemetery (above or below the now boarded up part of the chapel.
Only 475 stones but a lot of them are just small stones and they can be discounted.

In affectionate remembrance of Joseph Dawson of Crook who died December/13/1870 aged 34 years.
Also Frederick, son of the above , who departed this life April/15/1870 aged 1 year.

Hi Adam

I see that you have been kindly providing inscriptions from Crook cemetary.

I am researching my husband's family tree and wondered if sometime you would be able to let me have any information you may have on the surnames Dowson and Lawson please?

I am particularly trying to find information on Albert Leighton Lawson and Nina Dowson.

Many thanks

Peej

Hello Peej. No Albert or Nina and only one stone for Dowson, here it is :-

In loving memory of Margaret Jane, the beloved daughter of Thomas and Mary Jane Dowson of Crook, who died January/8/1891 aged 20 years
Also the above Thomas Dowson, who died July/6/1901 age 57 years.

My first posting listing the surnames had "Lawson " and it should have been "Mawson". I have edited the list and substituted the correct name
Sorry that there are no Lawson gravestones.

Hello Laurie. I don not know what years you are looking for regarding the Hardy family.
There are three from the catholic church at Crook. One stone 1940 's.
There are also  another two but they are 1960's and 2000 with one of the ages given as 96 years.
Let me know if they wanted.

Hi Adam. Thanks for looking, but these are far too recent, and I believe all the family were Methodists. My Thomas Hardy died in the 1860s or 1870s, but he's a tough one to find as it's not an uncommon name and he moved around quite a bit.

Thanks again,
Laurie

Adam, here's what I do have, and it's not much:

Thomas Hardy was born abt 1795 in Knaresdale, Northumberland. I have two sets of possible parents that same year and place!

His wife I'm really not sure of, but his daughter I am certain of: Ann Hardy was born abt 1822 in Kirkoswald, Cumberland. She married William Indian and then in County Durham, she married again to William Foster/Forster. Her siblings are unknown. I can document her marriage, but that's about it, so you can see why her father is even harder. I'm simply stumped on those two.

Oh thank you! Its really kind of you to do all this (I have been looking through the thread and you have done an enormous amount of work in order to help others) and it is very much appreciated.

I have the CWGC record of Sidney's death but its really nice to have this extra info and getting the actual death dates for Jane and John is a real bonus.
Its especially nice to see that Florence is there with her Mum and Dad. On the 1901 census there was an entry to say she was 'feeble minded' which I suppose was the terminology of the day for a condition  that would be much better understood now, I have this feeling though that then, as now, children came along and were loved no matter what their individual problems may have been.

Does the record you have give any indication of whereabouts the grave is in the cemetery? I feel an email coming on to ask if a friend in the UK would be able to go along and perhaps photograph the gravestone :-)

Thanks again Adam, you are a star :-)

I would like to thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

I am seeking inscription for Louisa (Ward) Alderson, wife of Cuthbert Alderson, died 24 April 1903 as well as their son, Percy who died 5 October 1901.

I know her father was William Ward but no idea of mother's name so I am in hope that they are also buried there which might help me figure out the mother's name.

As I understand it all the Aldersons are of one family and have a connection with the Dun Cow Inn.  My great grandfather (Cuthbert) always told everyone he came from Cow Tail although all of his records say Roddymoor.

Hell Adam, I have been browsing the site as I ama 'newbie' and trying to pick up on past info that can help me and I have come across this one and wonder if The Farrerrs Arms pub at Crook is named after him?  I thought it was an Alderman Farrer but maybe they're one and the same?
I have tried to trace records of who lived/owned the pub in the early 1900's but have not had much success as any site that I can access needs a street name and there doesn't seem to be one.
Do you have any idea I would be grateful as I have almost given up on this thread.

There is only one Farrar stone and that is for a Rev Wesley Farrar at Lanchester,so I do not think it would have anything to do with him.
I think you would get more responce if you reposted the question using a new subject heading, suggest:-
"Origins of the name "Farrar's Arms, Crook"

Hello Gillian. Sorry, no Whitfield and Smith gravestones for the (Christian names and dates)  that you posted.
There are a number for both Whitfield and Smith but they are not yours.
I think that Anthony may have been buried in the St Catherine's graveyard.
St Catherine's was built in 1841 so it fits the date.
There are only three or four gravestones left and where the others were moved to is any bodies guess.

Hello Moraf. The gravestone is for a 87 year old who died in 1995.
Of course the cut off date I use for postings would not allow me to post it.
You can have the details but it would be via the personal mail.

There is another burial for Jones at Crook, but that is at the Catholic cemetery. dated 1878.

I am trying to find a grave for Alexander Stewart ( born 1819 ) and died 3 Aug 1896. I am trying to find an exact  birth date.
In 1891 he was living in Commercial St, Crook & Billy Row but I do not know where he might be buried.
Can you help?.

Hello Gary. If he was living at Billy Row then he could have been buried at St Thomas, Stanley, Crook.
or at the Municipal cemetery at Windsor road, Crook.
There are no  gravestones at Tow law for Stewart.
There are two gravestones for Stewart at Windsor rd cemetery but not "Alexander Stewart"

Can you tell me who the 2 Stewarts who are in the Windsor Rd cemetery.

I know Alexander Stewart's date of death from his death certficate but I can not remember if it showed where he was living at the time. I am away from home until Sunday so when I get home I will check.

Can you tell me which other cemeteries in the area that might have him in. Do you have records of the Blackhill cemetery in Consett , if so are there any Stewarts there.

Sorry to be a pain and thanks for your help

I don't think there is a Stothart in the surname listings on the first post.

I have just posted the Scales inscriptions to Evelyn on the previous post.

Here is the only inscription for Hartley:- In loving memory of our dear son Thomas Taylor Hartley, who died December/20/1899 aged 2 years and 2 months.

I do really think it is a good idea to read the posts because they contain a wealth of information and you may find an inscription that gives you leads to other things that you are researching.

Hello Adam

I cannot find my great grandmother who is supposedly interred "Old Esh".  Where would that be?

She is "in memory of" on her daughter's headstone in Guisborough Cemetery, where it reads "also Hannah Fell (nee Bowes) ) beloved mother of the above who died Jan 1st 1907 aged 86 years.  Interred Old Esh"

She may not have had a headstone where she was eventually interred, and in any case she was Hannah Lawson, formerly Fell born Bowes.  But I don't know where to look.

Do you have anything for Hannah Lawson or Fell please?

Sorry I forgot to add she died in Ushaw Moor

Dear Adam,
I have a query on your message #130 re Walton MIs in Crook. You have 2 entries for Ellen Walton, but I think these are the same person.
You have a single grave for Ellen 1824-1894 of Temperance Terrace. This is definitely my gt gt grandmother and I have her death cert for the correct date 19 March 1894.
You also have a double grave for her + her husband, William. I was surprised to see him buried here as they were living in Esh when he died in 1872. Ellen is also shown as buried here with the same death date but 10 years earlier - 19 March 1884. I wondered if there had been a mis-transcription or whether I have a real mystery to solve!
Could you please check your notes for me?
Many thanks.
Chris
Title: Re: M inscriptions for Crook
Post by: Adamand on Monday 01 February 10 13:05 GMT (UK)
Hello Chris. The gravestone inscription for Ellen is correct as  March/5/1824 and died March/19/1894.
The date for the other one in question should have been a (9) 1894 and not 1884. The mistake should have been self evident because I have already given the correct dates as you have confirmed with the certificate
I did not say that it was a double grave, all I gave was the inscription and that is correct. (9 in place of the 8)
Because it has a persons name  on the stone does not mean that both persons was buried in that plot. Although in this case he was:)
If you look at the inscriptions later on in post number 130 you will see a gravestone inscription with:-
John William, Mary Ann, Frederick, Christopher and another Mary Ann. They were not all buried in that grave but were entered on the gravestone inscription.

Thanks for sorting that out. I had not realised that a grave could carry an inscription for someone buried elsewhere [at least, not without stating that fact]. I am still curious about why there were 2 separate graves - but I guess I won't unravel that.

Hello Gem. It will be the local authority you need to contact.
There may be a gravestone for Martin Johnson and it may be in the overfill from the older part of the cemetery that I have done.
It is very large indeed but the newer part is all very organized and in nice straight lines.
That should make the grave easy to find.

Dear Adam
Thank you very much for looking them up for me.
The last grave is certainly our family - it is my husbands g.g grandmother's.
The others are not known to me, but I'll be researching them to see if they are related.
Yours Janet

Hi Adam,

Would be grateful if you can let me know what there is for the Eddy family at Crook.

Some of my Eddy's spent a fair bit of time between Guisborough area and Gatehead. I know Whikham was one stop off point, and Crook may have been another.

Thanks in advance  :)

I do not know if this Eddy is a surname or a christian name. Possibly a son of Elizabeth?
I usually think of the  Eddy christian name as Eddie.

In affectionate memory of William Eddy, the beloved son of William and Elizabeth Buston of Crook, who was accidentally killed on December/24/1881 aged 15 years.

Hi Adam

I don't think these have been posted already, please can you give me the details for Lax & Waud(Lax).

No sure if there's any connection yet, one of these might be the builder George Lax, but the Lax you've posted details for on the Brancepeth MI's has helped to identify a family group.

Thanks
