Hi,
If I understood correctly, I believe that there is a transcription of the Denny Cemetery taking place.
I am researching the descendants of John Eddie Kennedy & Jean Burns of Falkirk & Denny who emigrated to Canada abt 1852/3 and settled in Egremont Twp, Grey Co., Ontario. They had 12 children born in Scotland - and while most were born in Falkirk they seem to have been baptized at the Old Parish Church in Denny.
Four of their childen died young and I am wondering if three of them might have been buried in the Denny Cemetery. They would be:
> William Kennedy (b. 25 Apr 1831 / d. 1835)
> Jean Kennedy (b. 10 Apr 1835 / d. Feb 1840)
> Elizabeth Kennedy (b. 24 Oct 1838 / d. 1849)
Any help at all would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Lili Kennedy

Hi Lili,
Unfortunately none of these children will be in Denny Cemetery as it wasn't established until early in the 1880's.
I have MI's for the other churchyards in Denny, the Old Parish and Broompark (existing stones only, not burial records) and there's no sign of them there either.
According to Dennyloanhead Church's Burial Records, there's a Margaret Kennedy (wife of James Risk) who died 28.06.1860 age 29 buried in Dennyloanhead Churchyard but there's no stone. There is however, a big family stone to the Risk family in Denny Cemetery which lists Margaret Kennedy.
The inscription is as follows:
"Erected by a few friends in affectionate remembrance of ELIZABETH STARK
Second daughter of the Rev. James Stark, D.D., Dennyloanhead
Who died 25th September 1887 aged 84 years
And of MARGARET MONCRIEFF STARK his grand daughter
Who died 24th January 1934 aged 82 years
CATHERINE ARCHIBALD RISK died 7th May 1881 aged 16 years
JANE KNOX RISK died 2nd April 1882 aged 16 years
JAMES CHARLES RISK died 3rd February 1888 aged 11 months
Interred at Dennyloanhead
In memory of MARGARET KENNEDY wife of James Risk
Died 28th June 1860 aged 29 years interred at Dennyloanhead
JAMES RISK died 24th May 1898 aged 76 years
JEANIE KNOX wife of James Risk who died at Edinburgh on 1st June 1922 aged 87 years
JAMES RISK youngest son of James Risk died 24th January 1961 aged 86 years
Cremated in Edinburgh
MARGARET RISK eldest daughter of James Risk
Who died at Stirling on 21st December 1936 aged 81 years
MARY RISK daughter of James Risk who died at Stirling on 22nd November 1950 aged 91 years
The Burial Ground of JAMES RISK of Bankier"
Do you have the family's whereabouts on the 1841 Cencus? If it was a case they lived in Falkirk, then the chances are they may be buried in one of those Churchyards which have mostly all been cleared - either for landscaping or the land used for re-development.
I had a look through the published pre-1855 MI Books for Stirlingshire and there's no Kennedys listed in any of the Churchyards there either.
Sorry for all the negatives!

Hi Anne,
We hadn't been able to find them in Falkirk so Denny was a bit of a last gasp chance. In 1841 and 1851 Census they were living in Skipperton, Falkirk, but the children being born and getting married was all taking place at the Old Parish Church in Denny - so it was worth the shot. The families were all listed as being hand loom weavers, so resources must have been pretty tight.
I am going to forward your information about Margaret Kennedy to a cousin who is working to find the siblings of John Eddie Kennedy - and his 3rd child was Margaret - so it is a lead worth persuing.
We have had such an interesting time researching the family and I really appreciate your taking the time to look.
Best wishes,
Lili

Hello everyone,
Could some kind person look to see if there is a monumental inscription for a William Henderson, died 7th November 1855. He is interred at Dennyloanhead churchyard. Thank you,
Greetings from Julina.
-
Hi Julina,
There is no stone in the Churchyard - there's hardly any left now at all.
It was cleared years ago to make a car park and existing stones were laid along the perimeter walls. The church itself closed around 20 years ago, became a fireplace showroom for a number of years and was recently in the process of being converted into flats but I think with the current recession, the builder has re-decided as it's currently up for sale.
I have a copy of the Burial Records for Dennyloanhead but the only William Henderson listed died/was buried 5th April 1837. His cause of death is listed as 'accident' and his occupation as Portioner & Labourer. The last/most recent burial, according to these records was in 1851 but I know from surveying various other cemeteries in the locality, that there were burials well after this date as I've found references on MI's saying people were buried/interred in Dennyloanhead.
Did you get your information from William's Death Certificate?
Anne

Sorry - duplicate post!
-
Thankyou very much Anne for the information. This man was accidently hit by an engine..however from death certificate i've since established he was a labourer
, whereas the William Henderson i'm searching for was a mineral borer from Denny. Regards ..Julina

Hi Helen,
Welcome to Rootschat! :)
They may be buried in any one of the Churchyards - Denny Old Parish, Dennyloanhead or Broompark but unfortunately there aren't any existing stones in any of them bearing the names Harvey or M(a)cLean.

HI new to this so not sure how to message apanderson, but i was wondering if you would be so kind as to try and locate a lady for me. She is meant to have died in Denny in 1856 but i cant find a record of this so wondered if maybe there was a memorial inscription anywhere. Her name is Marjory McGinlay possibly McKinlay maiden name O'Neil. Her father Arthur O'Neil also died in 1856 and the certificate says Burial Grounds of Denny. Would be grateful for any info regarding Denny McGinlays. Thankyou Barbara

Oh I see thanks very much. Hopefully she will see my message here. If anyone else has McGinlays in Denny I would love to hear from you. Babs

Hello Babs - welcome to Rootschat! (Hi Billy, long time no speak!!)
Denny Cemetery is out as it wasn't established till towards the end of the 1880's.
No stones for M(a)Ginlays, M(a)Kinlays or O'Neil(l)s in Denny Old Parish Churchyard, Dennyloanhead Churchyard, Broompark Churchyard or Dunipace Old Burial Ground, so even if Marjory and her father are buried in one of them, there's nothing to mark their grave.
Sorry!

HI Anne thanks for your quick reply :) I suppose as they were poor coal miners only just over from Ireland they must have been in paupers graves. I wish people would put their sources when they have a date, I dont like accepting things in blind faith and its frustrating trying to find the evidence. Oh well just another brick wall for now :-\

Hi Babs,
Doesn't look as though Marjory died in Denny (or anywhere else in Stirlingshire for that matter between 1855 - 1858). I had a wee look on SP using the following search criteria:
You searched for: Surname: "m*c*inl*y"; Surname Option: Wildcard; Forename: ""; Forename Option: Prefix; Sex: "Female"; Year From: 1855; Year To: 1858; County: STIRLING;
(Using * opens up all the variations)

While anyone is looking in Denny cemetery, can you let me know if you come across Grace Wardlaw Hendry(maiden name Stein)died 2001 and my auntie. Also about the only person I remember with any degree of affection from my bizarre childhood.
George.
-
Hi George,
Why not e-mail Falkirk Council and ask if they can confirm Grace's place of burial?
http://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/community/cemeteries_and_crematorium/cemeteries.aspx
I'm not sure what the situation is regarding cremation records - could Grace have been cremated? If that was the case, then it would probably have been at Falkirk Crematorium, within the Cemetery at Camelon.

Thanks Anne I will give them a go when they are back at their desks tomorrow.

many thanks Anne, I think marjorie is going to be one of those 'missing in action' kind of people!

Hi,
I hope I am doing this the correct way as I was unsure what to do really. Please, is anyone able to help me find the burial place of a Robert Young who died in 1838, he lived at Denny Loanhead. His wife was Jane and she died some years after him, I am hoping they are buried together as I don't know her date of death. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Oswald,
I have a transcription of the Burial Records for Dennyloanhead Churchyard and there is a Robert Young listed.
Unfortunately, there is no date of death or burial for him, all that's listed is his name, he lived at (Denny)Loanhead, he was an Inn Keeper and the cause of his death was Apoplexy.
There is no Jane Young listed, but women were very often listed under their maiden names rather than married names.
The 'other' Youngs listed are:
Christian Young, died/was buried 6th March 1839, age 73, Residence: Milton, Cause of Death: Palsy
Helen Young, died/buried 27th September 1836, age 69, Residence: Broomridge, Cause of Death: Palsy
Isabella Young, died/buried 22nd December 1837, age 74, Residence: West Borland, No Cause of Death
Mary Young, died/buried 7th March 1844, age 70?, Residence: Milton, Cause of Death: Decay
No stones exist for them and the Church itself has been closed for a number of years - at present the building is up for sale.
Have a look here: any http://www.falkirklocalhistorysociety.co.uk/home/index.php?id=65

Hi Anne,
Many thanks for your help, I am sure the Robert Young you found is the one I am looking for so that is great. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a record of his death in Parish Records. I will have to keep looking for his wife but thanks for checking.

The Falkirk Council has helped me locate the grave of my ggg grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Wands Stirling, in Denny Cemetery. She is buried in Lair 417. Also her nephew I think, James Stirling, is buried in Lair 419. He died 2 February 1907. Can anyone direct me to a source for inscriptions? Hoping for some clues from their gravestones. Thanks for any help.

Hello John
Welcome to Rootschat! :)
I had a look here: http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/ but unfortunately neither names you're looking for are listed.
Maybe there weren't stones marking the graves?

Can be of help to you on this ... "your" Robt Young was my late father's gt.gt. grandfather, an innkeeper/vintner, who had 2 wives. (my father descended from the 1st marriage to Christian Laing/Lang) Said Robt Young when widowed took 2nd wife, Jean(Jane) Hosie (Hossie) -- married her on Dec 19,1820, Denny area. Robt. died on/before May 27, 1838. His Will discusses both wives & children by name. [ Via 1st wife were Robt Jr (b.1802 & my ancestor) , Charles + daughters Christian & Mary.] Via 2nd wife were James, Geo, Wm, Andrew + in Codocil to Will he adds John b. 1836 - those names given by birth order. Believe Andrew migrated to Australia before 1854? Do you descend from him?
Existing Scottish records, show Jane/Jean Hosie/Young died age 79, Oct 18.1879, & had then resided with son James, at Craigmellan, Albert Road, Pollokshields, in Dist of Kinning(?), in County of Lanark..... [Her parents were James Hosie/Hossie, a master mason of Knowhead (Aberdeensh?) and James' wife Jane Hosie This 2nd wife of Robt, in census 1841 turns up recorded as Jane Young - innkeeper @ Loanhead - living with son Geo aged 15 + 2 hired help named Buchanan and Stevenson.
Unfortunately am absolutely stuck on Robert Young's details over his parents & where he born or names of his siblings. My late father was born 1908 in Scotland, but he & his siblings now all gone - a lot of ancient letters & documents seen when I was a child but long gone now.
Am trying to trace Robert Young, innkeeper but cannot find much before birth of his son Robert in 1802, via 1st wife Christian Laing. Given this ancestor of my side, born 1802,
likely "your/my" Robert Young was married the first time around 1800, so his birthdate
could be back around 1760-70-80, making him 20-40 years old at first marriage.
