I am researching for ancestors who emigrated to America in the 19th century.
Henry Poney Pow married Elizabeth Westman 1897 in Bridgeport Fairfield Connecticut. I am seeking any details about his children and their families.
Edith Pow born 1897 (No further details known)
Sarah Pow born 1898, died 22.6.1973, who married Joseph Buckley (date not known)
Lillian Pow born 27.3.1900, died 19.10.1979, who married John Sorenson (date no known)
Anna Pow born 1906, died 27.11.1973, who married Mr Mayo (name and date no known)
I know this is a lot to ask for. If anybody can give me information about any of these persons I would be grateful.
As far as I know they all lived in Bridgeport Fairfield Connecticut their whole lives.
Thank you in advance,
Muffin41 :D :D :D

Okay, that's good !! Was worried about that Passenger List really being him.
Not finding Elizabeth Westman on a Passenger List yet. She was young when she came over -- any clue if her parents/siblings came too ??
And not finding Elizabeth Pow's death yet but the on-line records are from 1949. She was alive in 1930 so could be anytime between 1930-1966 as Henry was a Widow when he died.
-
I know nothing about Elizabeth Westman at all. :(
Only that she also emigrated from Bradford Yorkshire to America.
The Ship is correct, I had that infomation, but you have confirmed it :D
Mother Sarah was born in Leeds Yorkshire in 1837.
I have a note that she died in Dover Ontario Canada in 1912 - NOT confirmed as yet.

Yes, Joseph is the brother of Henry. :D He died 23.6.1949 in Fairfield ;)
Wife was Annie Martin born about 1867 in Scotland - No idea where as yet :P
Children match to what I have so far. :)

We were making pretty good progress but now things getting tougher ....of course ::)
Did any other of Joseph and Sarah's children come over ?? Of the 10, Joseph (1867), Hannah (1872) , Wm. M, s/b be Thomas W (1875) Henry (1876) and Jane (1879) Do I have that right ??
Any possible married names for Hannah and Jane ??
Not finding anything for Joseph and Sarah in Canada....yet ... may need a Canada expert for that!

I did not want to put too much in one topic ;D
Muffin
-
Jane Pow married Herbert Wilson - no idea where he was born.
Marriage details not know.
Nothing known about Thomas William Pow Did he emigrate ??? ??? ???
Muffin
-
Why don't you tell us where you want to go w/ the further research ??
Re: Thomas, likely they would have left him behind at age 12 ?? or did he die before they emigrated??
I'm checking out the 2 sisters in Philadelphia
-
We can leave Thomas out as I have had no luck with him at all. :'(
Do you know of a marriage register, so that we may be able to find out the marriage dates or years for Sarah, Lillian and Anna Pow in my first post ???
Have you access to the Philadelphia Pennsylvania registers for Fanny and Hannah, or should I make a new topic as with the Canada notes ???
I am going to have a break until tomorrow in 15 mins. I have been on line for over 4 hours now!
Will wait up your reply and then log out until tomorrow.

I probably will not be of much further help - will be at work tmw ... I'm sure someone else will pick up on the thread.

Added: as of 1938, Edith Pow is still showing in Bridgeport directories under her own listings so I would assume not yet married.

I found an obituary for Henry Pow, Sr., which matches the 1966 death date listed above. It says he was born in Bradford, England and lived most of his life in the Bridgeport area. His survivors were listed as sons William and James (both of Bridgeport), Fred and Joseph (both of Stratford), daughters Mrs. Sarah Buckley, Mrs. Lillian Sorensen, and Mrs. Edith Goodchild (all of Stratford), and Mrs. Anna Mayo of Bridgeport. He was also survived by sister Mrs. Jane Wilson of Bridgeport and many grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
I also found an obit for Sarah Pow Buckley. Her late husband is listed as Samuel, not Joseph. It says he was a founder of Buckley Brothers Fuel Company in Stratford. She was survived by two sons, a daughter, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, 8 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Also found an obit for Anna Pow Mayo, who died 22 Nov. 1973. She was survived by her husband (Evariste L. Mayo) and a son. Her four brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survived her.
Lillian's husband died in June 1973 and they are listed as having four sons and a daughter.
I also found an article about a 50th anniversary party for Mr. & Mrs. John C. Sorensen. It says they were married on 7 Feb. 1923 in St. James Church in Stratford. Guests included the Pow siblings. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are all listed.
If you want the descendants' names, I'll PM you, since they are more likely to be living.
Edited to add: the 1939 Bridgeport directory says Edith married George Goodchild. They are listed in the 1940 directory as George J. & Edith A., living in Stratford.
Also, found a death notice for Hannah Ricketts, age 88, who died 10 Dec. 1960. Joseph Pow was one of the pallbearers.
Just found an article that says Sarah & Lillian married their husbands in a double wedding on 7 Feb. 1923.

I found the marriage index entry for Gail. I'll send it in a PM with the other stuff I found.
-
Do you mean the marriage was in 1935?
Details of possible living people shouldn't be posted here so if anyone can help with more details they can send you a pm with the information.
See that my post crossed with one from Shellyesq.

I realize that one should not post details of living persons.
When the person is old it is not easy to say when they are still alive or not.
The pm from Shellyesq has given me that info which I would not have been given in this topic. :) :)
Muffin41 :D

Glad that you've gotten enough information to fill in the gaps Muffin. Just in case you don't know the area Stratford is next to the town of Bridgeport. Bridgeport has two hospitals, Bridgeport and St. Joseph's (at least they were there in the 1980s), which might be why some of the Pows died in Bridgeport.
-
I may have some information about the Elizabeth Westman who married Henry P Pow in 1897 in Bridgeport Fairfield C. [I've researched all Irish-born Westmans living in England, family by family through the censuses, whilst trying to trace my own family of Westmans.]
I believe Elizabeth to be the daughter of George and Margaret Westman (both born Queen's Co, Ireland). George married Margaret (Cohen or Farrell) in 1865 Bradford, Yorks (from BMDs). George and Margaret and their family appear in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Bradford, Yorks, England, and appear to have emigrated from Ireland to England after 1861 and before 1871 and from England to the US in the 1880s.
George, I believe, is the son of Anne Westman born Ireland who also appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Bradford, Yorks.
1871
Anne 50 head/widow b. Ireland
William 25 son "
Mary 20 dau "
Lizzie 15 dau "
Margaret 13 dau "
Living 119 Grace Church St, Bradford
George 29 head b. Ireland
Margaret 26 wife "
Annie 4 dau Yorks
William 2 son "
Daniel 1 son
Living 44 Abbey St, Bradford
1881
Ann 60 in-law Ireland
Living with daughter Bridget and her husband Martin Hirson/Herson.
George 40 head Queens Co
Margaret 36 wife "
Margaret 22 sister "
Annie 13 dau Yorks
William 11 son Lancs
Daniel 10 son Manningham
Julia 8 dau "
Eliza 6 dau "
Mary 4 dau "
Joseph 2 son "
George 8 mon son "
Living 69 Chassum? St, Manningham, Bradford
George and his family emigrate to the US in the 1880s. George himself in abt. 1882 (according to 1900 census), children William and Annie in 1886 on The Queen, son Daniel in 1887 on The Wisconsin, and wife Margaret and remaining children in 1888 on The Alaska.
By 1900 I've only been able to find records for George, a widow and carpenter, and sons William and Daniel, weavers, and a dau, Kate (?) living in Bridgeport, Fairfield, CT. I haven't been able to find anything else about the family after this census and don't have access to marriage and death records for the area.
So could George's daughter Eliza/Elizabeth be Henry Pow's wife? Don't think there are any other Westmans connected to Bridgeport.
Hope of some help/interest.
Judith

Welcome to Rootschat, Judith :)
First I have to correct an embarrassing mistake in my earlier post :-[
... Bridgeport has two hospitals, Bridgeport and St. Joseph's (at least they were there in the 1980s), which might be why some of the Pows died in Bridgeport.
It should read St. Vincent's not St. Joseph's (embarassing because my little sister was born at St. Vincent's).
Here's the link to George Westman that you found in 1900 census-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9Q6-DV7
Could this be one of your English Westman's or just a co-incidence? (nearly same age as George's daughter in 1881 census)- Mary Westman, age 24:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QD-K8G
Joseph Westman here in 1900 along with what is probably brother George-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QX-M71
Son William in 1900? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QD-86B
-
Thanks!
Yes, I've seen these records, apart from the one for Mary. There is also a possible duplicate record for George's son Daniel as a private in the US military based in Aparri in the Philippine Islands, which would mean that both William and Daniel have been recorded twice in this census. Sorry, can't supply a link as I haven't kept anything but a written record.
-
Your earlier post said "By 1900 I've only been able to find records for George, a widow and carpenter, and sons William and Daniel, weavers, and a dau, Kate (?) living in Bridgeport, Fairfield, CT. I haven't been able to find anything else about the family after this census and don't have access to marriage and death records for the area."
Now you say you also had found Joseph and George :-\
-
Having a look through some more records trying to find what happened to this Westman family.
Could the 'Kate' with father in 1900 census be the daughter 'Julia' in 1881 English census?
I think the William Westman in the Fairfield Jail is George's son- slight difference in birthdates (Aug.1868/July 1869) but both give occupation as weaver.
Also think the Mary Westman I found in Bridgeport Almshouse is George's daughter.
-
Daniel Westman dishonorably discharged 6 Jan.1905 at Camp Bumpus. In 1910 he's living in San Francisco, California (born England but parents birthplace given as Connecticut). Occupation is 'laborer- street work' but entry has been crossed out (think he's been omitted from correct household and details written at end of district then ammended?).
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVGH-Y66
Think he's the Daniel Westman granted citizenship 11 Oct.1892 in Bridgeport.
Added- Daniel Westman, age 41, died 12 May 1911 San Francisco Co., California
-
Just to clarify. My posting was in response to the original posting on this thread as I thought I might be able to offer a possible identity and family to the Elizabeth Westman that married Henry P Pow. Although this family is possibly related to my Westman line, as cousins or second cousins, I don't have a definite link. It's rarely I find anything on line that I can add any information to.
Just read your latest message: yes, I did wonder if Kate/Julia were one and the same and yes I agree about William and Mary. This family doesn't seem to go anywhere in CT and at one time I wondered if they emigrated again, back to England or elsewhere, or simply died out without male issue.
-
Yes, I realised the connection is Eliza Westman who seems to have married into Pow family but thought you could keep a note of these Westmans in the hope of someday identifying a connection to your family.
Just found another possible death which may be George's daughter- Mary Westman, age 33, died 14 Dec.1908.
Picture of gravestone is here and it is really rather sad- dying at Conn. Valley Hospital might tie into being in Almshouse in 1900.
www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=73140904&ref=acom
1904 Bridgeport directory has a George Westman who removed to Newark, New Jersey
-
1903 Bridgeport directory- Westman Brothers (George & Joseph) have a saloon at 616 East Main St. so looks like the George Westman who went to New Jersey was Joseph's brother.
1902 Bridgeport directory has George Westman removed to Philadelphia :-\
In the 1901 directory I finally found father George (carpenter) mentioned.
-
Thank you both for the update to my original Topic- :D
Judith; your 1881 Census Details for the Westman Family living at 69 Chassum? St, Manningham, Bradford would confirm that the Pow & Westman knew each other before Elizabeth & Henry married .
Elizabeth Westman born 31 Oct 1874 married Henry Poney Pow who was living at 147 Chassum Street, Manningham in 1881.
The Pows´emigrated to the United States in 1885; not sure on which ship they travelled on ???.

Thank you aghodowey for all the info on the Bridgeport Westman family - you've found a lot I haven't been able to.
Good to know, Muffin41, that the connection between the Pow and Westman families of Bradford is a definite - living on the same street!
-
Judith, in the meantime I have been given this information which you may not know of.
Marriage:
25th November 1865
