http://www.planningni.gov.uk/AreaPlans_Policy/Plans/BMA/draft_plan/02Part4/volume6/villages/doagh.htm
has some history and planns for the area

The public records office http://www.proni.gov.uk/ is the main source of information although their records are not online, unfortunately.

http://www.historyfromheadstones.com/index.php?displaygraveyardinfo&graveyard_name=Doagh
may have some information re the graveyards of the area

also try http://www.ballynagarrick.net/ulsterancestors/Grange%20of%20Doagh.htm

if you use google (or any other search engine just enter the word Doagh and search on that there are quite a number of pages of information.

Thank you ..Thank you ...for your reply

I was thinking maybe my Grandmother was born on a lane or ditch or something.as the cert had no address ,only 'the entry'

Do you know if the houses are old, as she was born in 1906,and has the church got a grave yard?........and this is a long shot.... but do you know of any families in the area called Mayne, Todd, Kirkpatrick,Gault,Twig,McIlhenny,Topping, Crone,McCall as they could be related to me.

Thank you again ..from Stevenson ,who is very excited

hi
I have McGrugans living on Main street  Parkgate Doagh
Mayne family, Anderson Park Doagh and Kirks Cottages Doagh,  the other addresses are around Donegore Springvale Burnside Kilbride Antrim etc etc all from about 1900 to 1950 give or take a few years.

I also would love to know  if there are any Twig(Twigg)in your book as all these people are related form Sarah and Mary Twig

James and William Gault and James and William Stevenson are  relatives from that area but if they are the same ones Iam unsure

Thank you for your help..

Hi again Anthony

Trying to find a Sarah Twig and hot off the press my sister has found the only Sarah Twig at present born in 1830 and father Hugh Twig mother Elizabeth not sure if this is the right one until I have Belfast come back on death cert which is taking weeks.

(all birth cert's of her children suggest that this Sarah was unmarried and her maiden name was Twig) Although when one daughter married ,also called Sarah Twig, a father appears called Archibald Twig 35years later WE ARE A BIT CONFUSED(never heared of him before)

But this Directory, would it tell you what Hugh did for a living and where in Belfast he was living.

And can I be cheeky and is there a James Gault grocer of Belfast in your Directoryabout 1860 to1900 (give or take a few years ), he was married to Elizabeth Boyd from Ballinney.

On a lighter note ....Keith would love to know what the Irish did with potatoes...take a few minitues to read about 14lb of spuds ...I bet you've got a good few meals up your sleeve ..

Many thanks Stevenson

Hi Anthony
I am her (stevenson) sister and would like to say thank you too!!
That info was a great help - good job I logged on to site because she didn't tell me about it!
I am still very stuck on Sarah Twigg tho - appears to be unmarried and had several children between 1870 and 1890 in Antrim (one being my G.Gran) - only time I can find her is on 1911 listing

Have just found this page - yes I know I'm slow.  I am interested in anything to do with Doagh.  My Grandfather was John Hill and he was a shoemaker in Main Street, Doagh.  Other family names are Mullan and Gault, we also have some Todds.  All common names, but I have to start somewhere.  Any help appreciated.

hello Steve,
the story so far ...  John born 6 2 1869 was one of many children (I don't know exactly how many!) of Alexander Hill and Agnes Todd daughter of Robert and ? Todd.
John married Sarah Mullan daughter of Andrew and Harriet Mullan nee Gault.
They raised  eleven children.   Their eldest dau Agnes married James Todd, second son Alexander married Agnes Mullan and their youngest son Roland was my father.
Lots of Todds and Mullans.  Anything you can get your teeth into?

Hiya Steve,

A guy named John Crone owned a public house in Pilot Street, in the Docks area of Belfast, in the 1870s.

I found your site to-day after i googled william gault doagh. i was out walking and called at Kilbride Pres. graveyard about 2miles above doagh. I found the headstone of william gault, a school teacher who started the first sunday school in doagh in 1777 in the face of much opposition it states on the stone.
This may be of interest to you as you mention Gault in your history. Also visit www.ollar.utvinternet.com/kilbride.htm for a picture of the burial site.

Stevenson,
I know 'The Entry' in Doagh very well.
I had family live there for many years.
The church is indeed Methodist.
The Hall next door to it is not the Masonic Hall though. Its the Orange Hall.

Welcome to Roots Craig

A lovely rootschatter took pictures of the area for me and my sister and I managed a trip to the area a few years ago.

It would now appear that you and Loopster are related to us...... as our mother was niece to one of Georges brothers.

I am so excited...bounce bounce

A couple of websites that might interest those researching family around Doagh.
www.doaghancestry.co.uk
www.southantrimlivingmemories.co.uk
Through my family history research, I was able to contact living relatives from the Ballyclare and  Doagh area. A trip, from Australia, last year enabled me to vist Doagh and meet these lovely kinfolk.
