Title: Fitzsimmons of Halton County.
Post by: aljepeka on Saturday 02 August 08 01:15 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I have a Robert Fitzsimmons who emigrated to Canada. He married Alice Brown in 1891 in Nelson . I do have the marraige details and also the census details for 1901. I would dearly love more info on this family. Ultimately leading to discovering a few of their descendants. They lived in Halton County, Trafalgar Township in Oakville. I believe that they are buried in St Judes cemetary in Oakville.

ANY INFO ON THIS FAMILY OR THEIR CONNECTIONS WELCOMED.

Regards,
Aljepeka

Hi - It would help if you gave the province name where you found them in 1901.  Have you checked the 1911 Canada census at automatedgenealogy.com?

If you go to www.automatedgenealogy.com and look at the 1911 census, you will see the other children they had.

William John signed up for WWI - at the time he was unmarried, next of kin is mother Mrs Robert Fitzsimmons of Oakville.
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1567952
 - and he is listed on the CWGC list.
his younger brother, 'Edmond Robert' that Karen found on the birth list, appears to have signed up as Edward.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch - shows what might be Robert's death in 1932 - in Oakville, and Alice's in 1925.

http://www.halinet.on.ca/sigs/ogshp/ - the local OGS might be able to help as well.

I recall an Ed fitzsimmons, whom,I believe was the town manager of Oakville for many years.I think there is even a bridge named in honour of him.
Went to school with a Bob Fitzsimmons in the 1950s.
I will check my High School books for any further info.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for the great response - really grateful.  I tried unsuccessfully to go on this site last night but it may have been down for a while as it was the only site I could not log in to or maybe my computer was ' wonky'.  Busy Sunday afternoon here so I will get back to you all tonight when I have more time and have checked the sites you suggested .
I appreciate all the help.

Hi All,

I've just spent an informative hour looking at the websites you suggested
Jorose - THANK YOU.

I checked the 1911 census like you sugested Nick and it supplied me with 8 children although the two eldest were missing ie. William John and Lilian E. As they were the eldest they may not have been living with the family at that stage.

In the 1901 census there name is listed as Fitzimmons (instead of Fitzsimmons)and they resided in the subdistrict of Nelson in the district of Halton Ontario. Three children are listed William J, Lilian E and Florence M.

You will all have to forgive me as I am unfamiliar with the terminology of the geographic locations of Canada.

I had contacted 'halinet' last year but they were unable to give me any details other than the wedding details of Robert and Alice which I already asked them about and supplied the details of.

Robert Fitzsimmons was married to Alice Brown on the 1st Dec 1891. Alice was the daughter of Charles and Jane Brown and was born in England. Robert was born in Ireland and was the son of Joshua and Martha Fitzsimmons. According to his death certificate his parents were Robert and Jane but the details re. his parents is correct on his wedding certificate.  They were married  Methodist in  Nelson,  Ontario.

Robert died on the 8th August 1932 and Alice 31st Aug 1925.

On his death certificate it states that Robert was in Canada 40years.  I do know that he was still in Co. Armagh Ireland in May of 1885 as he was the informant at his fathers date. He married in Canada in 1891 so NOW how do I find when he emmigrated and on What ship.??????

Thank you to everyone for helping each post was worthwhile and assisted me greatly.

Luella, The family you mentioned living in Grey County were his Uncle, Aunt and his cousins. I have detailed info on this family from their descendants but as this family and the other Brothers of David Fitzsimmons(Grey county) all emmigrated in the mid 1800's the info the descendants have do not include 'my' Robert and his family.
I would love you to PM  with info on the Fitzsimmons you know of.

Is there any way for me to check church records for the  weddings/deaths etc of Roberts children??

Thanks EVERYONE for the info .

Barbara

aljepeka (Barbara):  David Fitzsimmons (b. about 1818 in County Down, Ireland; d. 1901 in Grey County, Ontario, Canada; m. Elizabeth "Betsy" Dowling 1854 in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada) was my 3rd great-grandfather.   You mention a David Fitzsimmons from Ireland in your last entry -- is this the same person?  If so, how was he related to Joshua Fitzsimmons (m. Martha) and his son Robert (b. Ireland; m. Alice Brown)?  Also, do you have any information on David's parents and/or siblings?  I don't have access to many details from England or Ireland, so anything you can offer from those locations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi :-),

Yes , We are related :-).
David born 1817, had quite a few brothers.  Some emmigrated to Canada , some stayed in Ireland.  I am Descended from David's older brother Robert (GGGGrandfather).   However the Robert (who married Alice Brown) is the son of another brother Joshua. Joshua also remained in Ireland.

The family home was only sold in the 1990's. I have a photo of it if you would like .  We can exchange other details too.

But Before you can send me a PM(personnel message) via Rootschat you need to have at least 3 wall postings.
We need to use PM so we can exchange email addresses.  The family has been pretty well researched by Davids Descendants. I can give you contact details of other cousins (mostly in Canada).
Several trees relating to this family are on  Ancestry and there is also a specific family site on my Family.

David was born In Moyraverty Townland, Co. Armagh, Ireland.  His parents were William Fitzsimmons and Ann Ward.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Finding these postings made my day!  I am also descended from this David Fitzsimmons through his son John Edward.  I am also at a complete loss, as accessing Irish records from Canada is nightmarish!  Any information that you could provide would be an amazing help!

Make 2 more postings and then you can use the PM system to contact aljepeka. That way you can exchange more personal information such as email addresses if you so wish.

You access the PM system by using the little green scroll under the name. If you have problems with this system someone on here will  work you through it.

Hello,

I am researching the Wedgewood family of Derry West now Mississauga ( not far from Halton, Trafalgar, Oakville area), trying to find Alice Brown b. abt 1871 in Yorkshire England.  She came to Canada as a young girl and lived with the Wedgewood family.  Alice was David Wedgewood's niece and she worked as a housekeeper.  I am wondering if my Alice Brown is your Alice Brown who married Robert Fitzsimmons?

Hope to hear from you.   awp

Hello again,

I have a few pictures of my Alice Brown.  If anyone else does, it might be interesting to compare photos for identification.

I am very suspicious that my Alice is Mrs. Fitzsimmons, as the names of her children are combinations of the names of the Wedgewood family she lived with.
