Title: German ancestor - when did he arrive?
Post by: ajbaker on Friday 01 August 08 19:43 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I'm trying to find out when and with whom my ancestor Adam Hanisch came to England.

He was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1853 and was definately in England by 1871.

I know some ancestry subscriptions include access to some indexed passenger lists, but my UK subscription doesn't let me view them.

I have seen him indexed variously as: Adam Hanisch; Adam Heinisch; Adam Heinish; Ackani Hanisch; Adam Harrisch. (And there are probably more variations on this).

Regards,
Adam

Probably not on a shipping list, as they were usually for USA, but was he naturalised ??

Bob,

I'm fairly certain that he can't have been naturalised, as his English wife was naturalised long after his death (1886) in 1919 (I have copies of the application and the London Gazette citation).

The only record of him I can find pre-1871 is an IGI baptism entry for an Adam Hanisch in 1853 in Koblenz. The name, date and place fit but I can't be 100% sure that it's him. I would really like to know if he came to England on his own, or if he came with his parents, and whether they match up with the IGI entry.

Regards,
Adam
