I am trying to find a birth record for my gt. granpa WILLIAM CABLE
According to his death cert. he was 80 when he died on 19/04/1904
altho his marriage cert gives age as 21 in 1849, which also gives birthplace as Rendham and father John Cable - Labourer
I have details of his life from 1861 to his death inc. a 2nd marriage but can't trace his birth or parents and siblings.
Any info would be much appreciated Thanks Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
Can you find him on 1841 census?
Where did he marry? English marriage certs don't give the birthplace. ???

1851 Benhall
HO107/1802
William Cable, 23, lab b Benhall
Mary Cable, 20, b Benhall
Maryann Cable, 9m, b Benhall
All lodging with John and Elizabeth Mayhew.
This probably them as, in 1851, William and Mary were in Benhall with Mary Ann, 11 + others.
Benhall is close to Rendham.

A possible in 1841. The father is Jonathan rather than John, and Hacheston is about three or four miles from Rendham.
1841 Hacheston
HO107/1028/10
Jonathan Cable, 30, ag lab
William C, 14
Emma C, 8
George C, 6
Sarah C, 3
Mary C, 5m all born in county

In 1851 (HO107/1802) Jonathan Cable's name has been crossed out (as he is away from home) but his wife is given as Harriot Cable, ag lab's wife, 36, b Hacheston. They are together in later censuses, with children and, sometimes, grandchildren.

Nanny Jan - I haven't found him on the 1841 census - thought there was a chance he might have still been with his parents if I did. He married in Benhall on Oct 17 1849 - Frances Boast. She was, in fact Mary Frances and sometimes showed up as one and sometimes the other she was buried as Mary Frances. William's 2nd wife was Mary Ann Nunn which led to more confusion !.
Sorry, it was on the census William was shown as born in Rendham
Richard - thank you for all the details. The Benhall census is definitely him - the Mary Ann listed was my grandmother.
I did look at the one with Jonathan Cable - it does seem likely, William would have been about the right age and Jonathan's are often shortened to Jon or John, it was the Blaxhall bit that threw me off the scent.
Thank you both for your efforts on my behalf - I think only a PR will solve the mystery completely. Regards Yvonne

Dear Anne,
Once again you have come up trumps for me, bless you. I had since found a marriage for a JC (bridegrooms Parish Rendham) to a Hannah Davis in March 1827 in Benhall on the Suffolk Marriage Index which fits in. Another shotgun wedding by the look of it!!
Many thanks again. Yvonne
