Title: Kilgour and its connection to Falkland
Post by: teadealer on Wednesday 30 July 08 19:31 BST (UK)
Hi all
I have been putting all my paperwork in some sort of order and came across this story about the origin of the name Kilgour.
Whateverthe origin of the name we know that it came from the Gaelic language. The Gauls carried it with them on their conquest to Ireland, and then the Irish carried it Scotland about the year 500AD.
One of the first to bear the name was a baby that was left on the steps of St.Thomas Church in Falkland Palace. The Child was raised by the kirk of the church and assumed his name.
The child was left there just after a great battle in which the clan of Douglas was almost wiped out.Legend has it that the child was a Douglas and was left there to save its life because the Douglas clan was outlawed by the crown.
Kilgour means" wooded hill" from the Celtic word for hill we get "kill"and from the Gaelic prefix kil which denoted achurch.
Another version is ahill of the goats, kil meaning hill and gour meaning goats.
Thanks All
Peter

Hi Peter,

I quite enjoyed your posting about the origins of the Kilgour family. Coincidentally, I was taking a look at the connection between Agnes Kilgour who married David Hepburn. Their daughter, Margaret Hepburn was born on 22nd October, 1800 at Newburgh in Fife.

I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more from you, especially if the information is as interesting as your latest posting.

My best wishes to you and yours,

Tom.

Hi Peter,

Getting back to your interest in the Kilgour family and their connection to Falkland.

I wonder if you are aware of Janet KILGOUR, who married John LUMSDEN, (a Wright), on 27th October, 1711 at Falkland in Fife. That is an Extracted Marriage Record, and can be found on M114285  Dates: 1705-1820  SCN: 1040111.

Incidentally, tragedy struck that family, because poor John died in March 1713 at Freuchie, in the Parish of Falkland, just 17 months after his marriage.

My best wishes to you and yours,

Tom.

Hello Peter,

Many thanks for that. As you probably know, Kingskettle is rather close to the nice little town of Ladybank on the way to Cupar. That means that it isn't all that far from Freuchie and Falkland. I certainly will have a closer look at those other connections.

While I was typing you a bit of assistance, your latest posting flashed up on my screen and somehow or other, caused me to double-post! I don't know how that happened. Hope that the Moderator can tidy it up for me.

Best wishes to you and yours.

Tom.

I have a Janet Kigour who married Alexander Page in Falkland 11 May 1800.  Could she be related?   No parents names are listed but the doc from OPR Marriages Falkland says "11 May 1800 Alex. Page Abbotshall & Janet Kilgour Parishoners"  These people are my ggg grandparents.

My wife has an ancestor Helen Kilgour born about 1793 Falkland to James Kilgour and Katherine Reid. Helen apparently had sisters Barbara b 1789 and Katherine b 1791.

Does anyone have information on this family?

Here's another Kilgour family, in case anyone's interested.

William Kilgour married Agnes Methven in 1835 at Auchtermuchty. Their son

James Kilgour married Marianne Lonie in 1864 at Cameron. Their daughter

Agnes Kilgour married Robert Redpath in 1886 at Newburn.

I am looking for the burial place for Robert Kilgour who was born in 1773 and died in 1835 both in Falkland Fife.  He married Jean Law on 1/3/1796. Any ideas where he might be buried?

If he was born in Falkland and died in Falkland why would he be buried anywhere other than Falkland parish kirkyard?

As he doesn't seem to be listed in the Fife Family History Society's Fife Deaths Index, the likelihood is that he is there but that there is no stone.

If you know that he died in 1835, what other information does that source give you?
There is a Robert Kilgour who died in Falkland in 1853 aged 84 (Fife Death Index gives source as Falkland OPR).
Regards,
Bill

Here's the 1853 extract from the OPR index at Scotland's People. As he was said to be 84 on 1 February 1853, and if that is accurate, he was born 1768/1769. If it's not accurate, he could have been born a year or three later.

If you think this could be the Robert Kilgour you are interested in, you need to look at the original at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and see whether or not it tells you where the grave is, and/or who else is buried in the same lair.

There is also a burial of Jean Law, 67, in Falkland on 17 September 1840.

In the 1841 census in Falkland are Robert Kilgour, 70; Agness Kilgour, 35; Jean Kilgour, 25; Robert Christie, 14. In 1851 Robert Kilgour, 78, born Leslie, is alone in a house in Falkland.

There's no surviving record of the baptism of a Robert Kilgour in Falkland between 1731 and 1791, but there is a baptism of Robert, son of Thomas K and Elizabeth Greig, in Leslie on 25 April 1773.
