Title: SYMINGTON/ORR Family 1890'S
Post by: PUDDING50 on Monday 28 July 08 11:24 BST (UK)
Not many confirmed facts to go on but can anyone please help me.  My grandmother Mary Josephine Symington was born in Dublin 19/05/1894.  All I can find is an unknown Symington born on that date and the parents are George William Symington and Margaret Orr.   I have obtained their marriage cert and it says George's father was also called George and Margaret's father was called Patrick Orr. I have found a Margaret Orr born in Donegal and also a Margaret Orr born in Dublin but one would be about 40 and one about 13 when Mary Josephine was born.  Any little bit of info would be very much appreciated.  Would really like to find any Symingtons or Orrs who could be my mothers cousins.  Thanks in anticipation.  Jane

Welcome to Rootschat. Have you searched 1911 Dublin census to see if you can find any connections? It's online at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search.

If Mary Josephine was born in 1894 her mother could have easily been born before 1864 and thus would have had no birth certificate. 1911 census (if mother is listed) should give how many years married and how many children/how many living as well as an age and a birthplace.

Thanks for the speedy reply aghadowey.  Cannot find her mother in Dublin census.  Will keep looking.  Cannot find her father either.  Thanks once again.

Maryderry - you seem to be able to come up with a lot of info on Derry people. Is there anyway you can find a marriage of William Gibson bc 1795 who married a Martha ??? c 1820. They were living at Carrick, near Limavady, where their children John,Robert and Alexander were born. They were presbyterians. The marriage could have been in Bovevagh or Limavady.Anything on this family will be greatly appreciated. Maryderry,  Thank you so much.  I have my great grandparents marriage certificate and the witnesses are James Symington and Alice Orr so all that ties in.   Couldn't get any further until I knew Alice's mother's maiden name.  I am visiting Dublin soon so this information is very helpful.  I can at least start my family tree on my mother's side.   Thank you so much.  Best regards. Jane

Maryderry,  I am still delighted with what you have found.  I have drawn out my family tree and all the names relate to names in my mothers immediate family.  How have you found this I have been searching for approximately 10 years so I am very grateful to you.  I have researched my father's side but have always found a blank on my mother's side.  Any information on any of the siblings and their marriages and deaths would be appreciated.  Can't thank you enough.  Jane

The records Mary found are most likely from civil registrations (births, deaths and Catholic marriages from 1864 and other marriages from 1845)- for earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they exist). Suggest you start a new topic asking for details about Gibson family if you haven't done so already.

Hi

www.dublinheritage.ie shows birth details for:-

Margaret Orr born 13 Aug 1862 and baptised at St Catherine's
Margaret Orr born  5 Feb 1871  and baptised at St Mary's

There are multiple baptisms (around that time) in both these parishes for Orr children, so these may be siblings.

Do you know in which parish your Margaret married?

Cheers

Thanks LH.  My Margaret (assuming she is the one!) was married to George Symington Catholic Chapel of Sandymount Donnybrook Dublin.  A speedy reply would be appreciated as travelling to Dublin tomorrow to try and see some of the places my grandmother has in her scrap book.  Thanks again. Jane

Birth certificates for Margaret Orr will not show which one might have married Symington.
