My great great grandfather Miles Geraghty b.1857 and his brother Patrick b.1844 from Ballinagh, Cavan migrated to South Australia in about 1879.
Their parents were John and Bridgid Geraghty (nee Farrelly)
Family oral history says that John was the son of Phillip and Anne Geraghty (nee Sheridan)
Any information about these families would be truly appreciated. I have copies of the marriage details for John and Bridgid Geraghty and the baptism details for their children.
I'm from Australia and I'm at a loss as to where to search. ???
Many thanks :)

Welcome to Rootschat, kay bird.
Cate- the PM (personal message) system doesn't work until you make a few posts (anti-spam measure) so kay bird will have to make a few moreposts before using pm system,

Thanks aghadowey - I hadn't realised that about the PM's.
Kay - which child of Miles Geraghty is your friend Pat descended from? I am in touch with another descendant of Miles Geraghty who has done quite a lot of work on the Geraghty family tree. If you answer me a few times on here you wil be able to get PMs and I can give you some email addresses.

My great grandfather was Miles Aloysius Geraghty (1857) and his first marriage was to Margaret Barry (1862) in South Australia. Margaret died after the birth of their youngest child (Miles). Their fourth child Patrick was my grandfather. Miles Aloysius' second married was to Margaret O'Donnell - no children. Miles Aloysius' and his brother Patrick migrated to South Australia from Ireland. They both had small farms in Oakbank c1887 and moved to Coonawarra in South Australia c1906. My grandfather Patrick married Catherine Agnes Smith. They moved from Coonwarra to Port MacDonnell in South Australia.
I would be really keen to hear from anyone who has any information on the family, both the Australian and Irish connections ...

Hello!
My great great grandfather is also Miles Geraghty! The first daughters name of Miles and Margaret is Bridget Mary, who was born in 1884. Her first daughter is Myrtle Adeline, my grandma.
Cheers

Hi Bradley
We are also descended from Bridget Geraghty - via William Carson, Bridget's third child. Myrtle had 4 children and I am in touch with 2 of them, Les and Lorna. Are you a member of George's family?
Would love to PM you but until you have a few more posts on Rootschat, the personal message system does not work for security reasons.
Regards
Cate

Hi Cate,
I am not really a member of George´s family, but of Lorna. She is my Mum. I am living in Germany. We are trying to get a lot of informations for our family tree.
Best regards

Hi Bradley - I have sent you a friend request via Facebook - Robyn and Ann are already in my contacts. I've been doing a lot of research on the family over the past few years and would be more than happy to pass on any information that you don't have. Your Mum may still have our email address - C. and A. in Qld. Regards :)

Hi
I am excited to find a number of you who are related to Miles/Myles Geraghty. My sister and I are researching Dad's side of the family. Miles Aloysius Geraghty was our GG Grandfather. His son, John Augustine Geraghty (born in Australia) was our G Grandfather. John married Bessie Farrelly in Florida and had two children (Patrick b 1908 Florida and Bessie/Elizabeth b 1910 San Francisco). We believe that Bessie (the mother) died either in the US or shortly after travelling to Glasgow (there is a record showing a mother and two children matching this family - presumably on the way to Ireland). Dad always understood that John was in the army but we are yet to find records of this.
All the names discussed in these posts are familiar from our family tree!! We would love to connect with others either from John's line or back from Miles' line.
Thank you
Kate (New Zealand)

I am keen to see if I can make contact with some of you as it seems
We have ancestors in common. I think I have to post a few times before I can contact anyone individually. I’ll add a few posts and see what happens!

The spelling was changed over the years, Garrity on the 1911 census.
We had visitors from Australia here.
Margaret her grandfather was Patrick.
She got to see the house miles lived in.
-
Hi Ballaghanea
That is rather exciting that you live where Myles and Patrick lived prior to going to Australia. Along with some others, we have been gradually filling up the family tree. I would love to know where you fit into the tree. Do you know much about the family tree?
I think because you are new on here, you need to communicate a few of times before being able to send direct messages. I would be very keen to know more about how you fit into the family.
Thank you
Kate

Hi Kate.
I am terribly sorry.
I am just reading one of your responses for earlier and it is a Patrick that you are trying to find. It is John the grandson on the census but I know the story of Bessie Farrelly I heard it last year when are relatives in Canada was trying to find out from my dad.
I get very confused about it all,
But the lady Bessie was sent to other relatives and I thought the grandson was sent back to here.
I will have to ask my dad later.
If I get cut off I am sorry.
All the best.

Hi
I have traced some information about Bessie Farrelly and some movements of John Geraghty (Miles’ son ) and Bessie Farrelly in the US. Bessie arrived in the US in 1907, John and Bessie got married in Tampa Florida and then went to California where my Granny Bessie Geraghty was born (she married my Grandad Patrick Galligan). I have been unable to find where Bessie Farrelly died (apparently in the US). I have quite a bit of information written down now and I am happy to share it if you are interested.
Here is how I am related to Miles:
John Geraghty and Biddy Farrelly - Miles Geraghty (Married Maggie Barry) - John Augustine Geraghty (Married Bessie Farrelly) - Bessie Geraghty (Married Patrick Galligan) - James Francis Galligan (Married Jo Belgrave) - Kate (Me)
Along with the Geraghty/ Farrelly families I am trying to trace information about the above mentioned Patrick Galligan’s father (Philip Galligan who had his family in Knocktemple with Mary Conway from Drumheel). I do know that the Geraghty/Farrelly/Conway families were intertwined so it is possible that the Galligan line in my family is connected too. Just putting it out there in case you know of any connection.
Thank you
Kate

I thought I'd post to say that my sister and I have set up a family Facebook group for Geraghty relatives (originating in Ballaghanea). If you are connected to this family, make contact with me and we can confirm your connection and then add you to our group.
