Hi Princess,

I was wondering if you have a Robert Ord born abt 1814. My g,g,g grandfather Robert Ord was born in Northumberland. He had three brother according to what my father had told me. He also said one of the brothers maybe a James but wasn't to sure. Robert came out to Australia and was taught the trade of boot making. Dad didn't know the name of the ship nor when he arrived in Tasmania, Australia but he did say, Robert had set up trade in a town called Don in Tasmania. I have all the ifo on him from there on. I even found Robert applying to marry Ellen Finn who was a convict. I have her info as well. I have been stuck on Robert for years. I just don't know where to look to try and trace him back to England. Any help would be fantastic :)

Hi Cazzie,
Welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have Robert Ords Australian Death Cert?
It should provide at least his Fathers name and Occp.
If not when did he Die and where?

I have looked around but cant find a conclusive chrsitening for him and Northumberland is a large area.

I found this which has the Marriage of Robert/Ellen;
Hi Everyone,> My gg grand
mother Ellen Finn was a !
convict. She was tried county waterford 1 Apr 1848 for larceny and
sentanced to 7 years transportation to Australia. She left Dublin on 11 Oct
1848 on board Lord Auckland(3) with 200 female convicts and arrived in
Tasmania, with 199 female convicts on 20 Jan 1849. Ships Master: Thos Bacon,
Surgeon: JN Moodie. > She went to the Female Factory as I found her on the
list there. > I have no idea what she did from the time she arrived in
Tasmania until the time she applied to marry my gg grandfather, Robert Ord,
1 Oct 1850. I found both of them had applied to marry. They married 7 Mar
1851, Manure of Evandale, Morven, Tas.>

I noticed also on another posting Ellen was a Widow when marrying.

I am no expert on Tasmania but found these Deaths/Burials;

ORD
ELLEN 1878 Don Congregational Cemetery
ROBERT 1882 Don Congregational Cemetery
Source, http://tascoastalcemeteries.com/indexlist.html

You need this Death Certs to proceed. And a post on the Australian Board here on Rootschat may provide info as other Rootschatters have access to Records I dont.

Hi Trish,

On Roberts it says, died Sep 28th 1882 aged 72, was a farmer,
died of old age. His daughter  Alice signed and he was living in
Don Tram Road at the time.

The on marriage certificate it says, Married Manre of Evandale,
7th March 1851. Robert was aged 37, a bachelor. Clergyman was Rove Rapele (Not sure if that is spelt right.
Wittnesses are, James Callaghan I think and Catherine Crittle I think.

Ellen Finn Was aged 33 and she was a widow.

Oh boy am I cold this morning and it is Spring lol

Hi Cazzie

Unfortunately there are lots of Ords in Northumberland (and Durham). Mine were from the north near the Scottish borders. They were labourers taken on at the hiring fairs as all the children were born all over the place.

The earliest I have is a Thomas born 1802, and I am descended from one of his sons who ended up in Broomhill.

*Ances* have an Ord forum you could perhaps post on, or if you had anything which said which part of Northumberland your Robert came from then it would help to narrow things down.

Thank you for your reply Tracy,

I don't have any other info about where in Northumberland my g,g, grandfather lived.

I guess my Robert really didn't want that connection found back to England lol.

Thank you again for getting back to me  ;D
