Post by: mark73 on Saturday 10 April 04 13:28 BST (UK)
Occupation: Cab Washer

From a 1891 census. Anyone any idea what this job would involve?

Or any good  websites with occupation lists and descriptions.

thanks
Mark

Hiya,

I've attached a text doc of occupations I got this from a GENUKI site which I now can't find, whoops - I hope that doesn't breach copyright?

Cab Washer isn't on it but I presume this is someone who was employed washing hansom cabs there were companies who owned many Hansom cabs and would need a person to wash 'em.  Just a guess mind.

Cheers,
Pam

Hi,

This was of course the boom time for the railways.  It may be worth looking at some of their specialist sites for reference to Cab Washer.  I have an Engine Washer in my tree,  who is later referred to as a Locomative Engine Washer.

Lots of links in the Beginners transport section on this site.
