Title: Missing from all Census from 1881 - 1901
Post by: dorothymay on Tuesday 22 July 08 18:21 BST (UK)
Cannot find my grandfather William John Laker and his family anywhere on any Census from 1881 through to 1901.. he died aged 49 years in   September 1920 Commonwealth Road Caterham, Surrey.

William was married to Elizabeth Ann Green 1898 Bethany Hall Croydon Road Caterham Surrey.

I knew he had connections with the Salvation Army in Caterham, and was a Band Master there and founder member of the Original Citadel.

William also signed up to the Bedfordshire Regiment, and was disharged early probably due to ill health...

William John , Elizabeth Ann, children Elizabeth Fanny born 1899, and a child born to Elizabeth Ann outside of marriage but not Williams proven by birth cert, named Mary Ann Elizabeth Green born 1896, should be on the Census somewhere, but I cannot find them anywhere.

4 other  children were born after the 1901 Census, and a possible further son William John Laker birth year unknown.Referred to as the oldest though.

Can anyone suggest where I could look now..

thanks
dottie

Hi Dottie,

Do you have the marriage cert? What's William's father's name? Any idea where the girls were born, and where and when Elizabeth Ann Green was born?

 :)

Hi everyone,
just to say that William J born 1870 with father Alfred is alive and married to Alice in 1901.  :(
It is odd isn't it and as you say Terry, he could be under a different name or he could have made his father's name up- all sorts of things I suppose.
My relative had given his own name as his father's name and it sent me on a widgoose chase for a long time - completely different name in the end. ::)
It's difficult without a place of birth.
Could you get any details from Bedfordshire regiment? Although if that was WW1, I suppose the family details would be wife. It may have his place of birth though.
best wishes
heywood

sorry its taken me so long folks to get back to you, last Wednesday had an operation on my foot, today is the first time I have actually felt like getting back to some research..... :)will carry on with some research today, so far cannot see a likely William John Laker in the list as it appears I have covered most of these, and coupled with some birth certificates I have for William have discounted them if they do not show William senior as father. But obviously will keep them for future reference just in case.

Think today I could try looking through the census 1871 - 1901 for a William John Laker stepson, which if his mum had re-married could possibly narrow the search down.

thanks once again folks.....

Hi have checked my records and certificates again, and found in the list above one that looks very promising.

William John Laker born 1869 4thQ St. Pancras, so could have been registered in 1870 now working back from death cert age at 49 in September 1920, this could be him, so am going to apply for this one........

Well you have to try.. ::)certainly do not have this one yet. Will let you know how I fare when it arrives.......

thanks once again for all your input :)

Hi dorothymay,
A William John Laker from the Bedfordshire Regiment has a medal record from WW1-do you have this info?
LAKER William John -Bedford Regt.-Private 23961
Won the British Medal-lots of numbers listed next to that !!
Maybe you could get his record if it is one of the lucky ones to have survived, do you think it could be him?

Hi again dorothymay,
It seems that if you can get a copy of his Medal Index card, or even as you have his Regimental Number, this website maybe able to help:
www.bedfordregiment.org.uk
Go to the page which says: Researching an ancestor
It seems promising, and who knows what information they may have further.
Best wishes, haliared

yes :)have this information, also contacted the Bedford Regiment Musuem who couldn't help me any further....but they explained all the details to me that were written on it and what they meant, and said he was probably disharged early due to ill health, William according to death cert died from a stomach carcinoma..have also printed out roll of honour cert.and have visited the Kew Archives early on this year, no joy there records were destroyed - just my luck.......

anyways hopefully I'll have some luck with this birth cert..... :)

Also Nigel Lutt Bedfordshire Records Office has sent me some information and print outs of where the Bedfordshire Regiment served etc. so lots of information all in all, but no correct birth certificate, and no trace on the census - strange that.............

Received Birth cert. for grandad William  Laker 1870 17th September, and lo and behold finally have one with fathers name also as William.  mother Sarah Phillips
fathers occupation Ginger Beer Maker 2 Bennett Street ... although on grandads marriage cert. his father was down as a Seaman.

Now after some more research through the 1881 Census for grandad William found he had been sent to The Middlesex Industrial School Feltham, I think maybe his father died when grandad William was a young age.

On the marriage certificate for William 1898 his father is listed as deceased....

More to follow once I can verify all these facts.

thanks once again for all your input :)
