I can give you some more detail about this family but there is a problem in what you have posted. It is obviously unlikely that Donald b. c. 1816 and his wife Mary b. 1837 had a som called John in 1847 when mary was just ten. In fact the couple did have a son of that name but not till 1872 and he died in infancy. They lived incidentally at 476 Taobh a Deas Locboisdale.

The Hugh [Eoghann] family at the time of the 1841 Census showed Hugh as a widower aged 65(-70) while Donald and two siblings, Margaret and John, were all shown as aged 20. As ages were to the nearest five years below actual, this probably implies that Donald was born say 1816, Margaret 1818 and John 1820. There were younger children Lachlan 15, Christian 12 and Peggy 1. The last must be a grandchild, I would thing, perhaps of an older son not present. There was a neighbouring John with a son Donald an a son Ewen i.e. Hugh so this might well be the further son of Hugh sen.

The Donald and Mary MacDonald family was Ewen b. 1857, Margaret 1859, Angus 1862 (= 1 Mary MacInnes and 2 Ann Gillies) who succeeded to the croft, Lachlan 1864-77, Effie 1867, Kirsty 1870 = Malcolm MacDonald and settled in Glasgow, John 1872, Mary 1874 = Archie Morrison and settled in Glasgow, and another Mary 1877-99 = John MacDonald and settled in Glasgow.

I hope this gives you a bit of what you were looking for and, if you can clear up the puzzle, I will happily have a further look at the Censuses.

Forgive me but don't you still have the same problem. Whether it is his death at 74 in 1919 or his age of 36 in 1883, that John was born in the 1840s, specifically 1845 or 1847. He cannot logically be the son of Donald's wife Mary MacDonald who will have been only eight or ten at those dates if she was indeed born in 1837 or married in 1856?

On the main point, there was, as far as I can see, only the one Eoghann/Ewen/Hugh Currie in South Uist at the relevant dates so I would be pretty sure this was the line you set out in your first post. I will dive off now and have a look at the intermediate censuses.

Yes. I have the solution. If you look at your 1883 registration of the marriage of John to Margt McInnes you will see that his father Donald was already deceased. On the other hand Donald Currie son of Ewen/Hugh did not die until 7.5.1884 i.e. the next year. Donald son of Hugh not only married ten years + or - too late to be father of John but never had a son John.

There was another Donald Currie in 1841, also married to a Mary, presumably also a MacDonald. The family were in Kilpheder rather than South Lochboisdale. In 1851 the family there consisted of Mary Currie 40 widow fm servt, Maron dau 15, Christy 12, Euphemia 6, John 7 and John 5. This is the later family you are seeking and nothing to do with Hugh or his Donald. Bill Lawson has published a croft history of Kilpheder and, while the family appear not to have had a croft, they may appear in that booklet as cottars.

I hope this sorts things out. Angus

Hi again: Just to tidy things up, you can confirm that there were indeed two Mary MacDonalds, each married to a man called Donald Currie.

The one you have as born in 1837, married to the Donald son of Hugh died in S Lochboisdale aged 69 22.8.1904 was daughter of Angus MacDonald and Peggie MacInnes originally from Benbecula but I suspect later on the northern tip of South Uist. The couple did not have a son John.

It was though a son John who registered the death of Margaret Currie nee MacDonald, widow of Donald Currie in Daliburgh aged 72 26.12.1883, daughter of John MacDonald, crofter and his wife Peggie Morrison. This Currie/MacDonald couple are recorded as having married in Kilpheder in 1829 and they were the ones who had two sons called John in the 1840s. If you are secure in the later parts of your tree and the relationship to John, then this rather than the Hugh Currie family is the one for you.

Good hunting. Angus

Sorry, I was on GenesReunited at one time but found they provided so many irrelevant leads that I got bored and dropped out of the system. Do yo have your tree on a Genealogy programme? If so you are welcome to email me a file and I will certainly have a good look at it. Angus

Hi there.  This is my first posting here, all new to this.  Anyway, a few names you mentioned seemed familiar to names i am tracing.

I don't have much information, but believe that a Mary Currie (Curry?) married Archibald Morison, they gave birth to Catherine (Amongst other siblings)...who later married Angus John Ferguson.

I am looking for any information of either of these 'trees'...Morison - (possibly from Heisker) or Ferguson - (from North Uist).

Thanks for any help in advance.
Heather.  :)

Hi Kimberly (another common link with our families) & Scutty,

An old post I know but here's what I have and may help others.

I have a common link with you both.

Kimberly,
I have Euphemia/Effy Currie b 03 May 1839 (dau of Donald & Mary/Margaret MacDonald - seems she was known as both) who married my 1st cousin (3 removes) Malcolm Steele on 10 Jun 1873.

Scutty,
I have Mary Bella (my 3rd cousin – 1 remove) dau of John Currie & Margaret MacIsaac.

Not sure how far on you both are since posting but if you are both still looking for info. I can help.

P.S. At this stage I cannot determine if both Euphemia and Mary Bella were related to each other but definitely a strong possibility.

Regards, Anne Marie

Scutty,

Not sure of how you have progressed since your post?
Mary Bella is my 3rd cousin x 1 remove  ;D

I would like to know who Lachlan's parent's were & any children but because of the dates which would include living people you can only post details of any deceased people (please do though as it may attract other's related/connected) but you are welcome to PM me with up-to-date details which can't be published here  :(
