Both are in Grave Division A, Section T, Row B, Number 30. This is a private grave on which there is a Marble Headstone and Kerbs. - is anyone able to go and take a picture for me
William Bleasby died in Hastings aged 71, a Clerk in Holy Orders, was buried on 25/4/1885
Alicia Bernard Bleasby died in Plymouth aged 94, a Spinster was buried on 6/1/1915
Also - would you think normal for a person who dies in Plymouth to be buried in Hastings - and would you think there would be a news article - as Alicia was living with niece in Plymouth at time of death - they must have had money to get her buried hastings and a marble headstone
can some one shed light on the Clerk of the holy order - William and Alicia (brother and sister ) lived in 10 Church Rd - someone tells me this is now the Greek Orthodox church - would like to now more about 10 Church Rd

Hi Flinders

Hi
I assume you have all these but if not
The 1881 census is free to search on either www.ancestry.co.uk or www.familysearch.org If you look for William Beazley in Sussex you will find him with Alicia in Hastings.
William age 69 unm Clerk in Holy Orders (without cure of souls) born Cork, Ireland
Alicia age 58 sister b Cork
plus two servants
In 1871 he is at 10 Church Road Hastings age 60 and is. His sister Alicia is living with him again. Two servants also.
The 1861 is hard to read but they appear to be lodging at the same address and the first named person is Mary Bleazby wife 43 Stationer's wife?

Yes, moved it to the correct place where I thought it would get more coverage and possibly some feedback - hence the extra info from Andrea (Sillgen)
Wind and rain are howling down here in Hastings at the moment, so the picture has to wait a day or so I am afraid - but dont fret, will go and do it as soon as I am able.

Oh thanks - never know where to post info - soemtimes
I know all about the info on the census - but what would be great to understand what the "Clerk in Holy Orders (without cure of souls)" - actually means - is this church of England/Ireland or some other religious worship - what church building would he have attened
10 "Church Rd hastings - would today's building be the same as when they were there - is it a

"Without cure of souls" just means that he does not have responsibility for a particular parish. However, he obviously did in the past if you look at the Crockford's entries when he was a curate. Many ordained men were schoolmasters rather than working priests or in his case it looks as if he was of independent means. I would assume he was C of E though he was ordained in Ireland so was probably Church of Ireland at that time. Lots on google if you do a search.

It may seem strange, but my wifes ancestor the Rev Jonathan Eastwood came down from Eccesfield in Yorkshire where he was the curate to Hastings in 1864 to recover from TB - unfortunately whilst he was here he died in June 1864 and is buried in Hastings Cemetery in Division A, Section K, Row I, Number 9. which is not to far distant from your relative.
His address at the time of death was listed as The Rectory, Church Road on his death certificate - and having visited the address, it is right next door to the St Mary Magdalen Church (now the Greek Orthodox Church)
So it looks as though your ancestor trod a similar path to that of my wifes Great Uncle

so the now greek orthodox church would have been their church in 1860s
one of the census has them at another number at church st
they say if you speak long enough - you find a connection
-
Hi Chris - have you had a chance to take the pic of the headstone -
and thanks to Andrea - for the added info
regards Flinders

Hi Flinders
Yes, I have been across there on 3 seperate occasions with different lighting conditions (early morn, midday and late afternoon - sun casts different shadows on the stones) but as yet have been unable to locate your stone and kerb surround.
As you can see from the map below, I know exactly where it is supposed to be - but there are several blank spaces on Row B, especially at the higher number end where B30 should be.
Sorry for this dissappointment, but I have tried

Chris sorry to hijack the thread but on the 19th i am going to hastings to the H&R FHS thingy - with Muddypuddy who wants to visit the cemetryin Hastings at the same time in the hope of finding her ancestors - mine are at hooe and in unmarked graves :-\
do you have an index of whre they may be?
-
Thanks Chris for trying -
Toni - you must be the person who Muddypuddy was telling me she was going to Hastings with
Just wanted to let you know my name is also Toni
William Bleasby buried on 25/4/1885 and Alicia Bernard Bleasby buried on 6/1/1915
Both are in Grave Division A, Section T, Row B, Number 30.
It was the Cemetery that wrote that the grave had a Marble Headstone and Kerbs.
-
no wonder she is getting confused with two Toni's ;D
does Hastings come under ESCC? - i think it does although they are Wealden Dc and i am Lewes DC anyhow i know they - that being ESCC 'pushed over' a lot of supposedly unstable stones and there was a big hoo ha about it
-
Hi Ladies
Have checked very carefully any upturned / uprooted stones of which I think there were two in that section - but the names on them were not what I was looking for.
Hastings is under ESCC and lots of stones have "been made safe" by the cemetery staff.
No, sorry, do not have an index, but if you contact the cemetery, they normally look for the burial in their books and advise accordingly
If you Toni and Muddypuddy want to meet up with me on the 19th, then am only to happy to do so - will even buy you a cup of tea.

I wish i could be over there with you all on the 19th - and would love a cappa - so i will have one here - and close my eye and dream of wondering the cemetery
Thanks - for going to so much traouble - if you do turn anything up of William and Aliciai Bleazby - that will be a bonus
cheers Flinders/Toni
