Could anyone help me with some details of the sergeant in this picture?
I think he is either RA or RE. The picture mount has the name of the photographer printed on it as:
J Porter
6 Schoolhill
Aberdeen
I think that it was taken in the WW1 period.
It has been in my family for as long as I can remember but my research so far has not come up with anyone who corresponds to this chap.

Royal Artillery definitely.
Rank appears to be Sergeant Wheeler looking at his insignia

Nice clear picture MNJ, and I would agree with Neil on the rank and regiment. Is there any chance that you can post an image of the cuff area of his sleeve as he is wearing an arm band at the cuff and it either says AMP or RMP........cheers

Thanks for that folks. I can't manage to get a clearer scan of his cuff but, having looked at the original with a magnifiing glass, I'm 95% certain that the initials are RMP. Is this Regimental (or Royal) Military Police?
Any ideas on what Gunner units were stationed in the Aberdeen area during this period?
Regards,
Mervyn

Just a point of interest; the Corps of Military Police was not granted thE ' Royal ' prefix until 1948.
