Title: John McSevney
Post by: dunlata on Tuesday 15 July 08 14:10 BST (UK)
Looking for information on John McSevney born 4 Sep 1857 in Craighill Coylton, Ayr.
He immigrated to Antigua where he married Harriet Mary Garling. Have looked up IGI and ScotlandsPeople without success.

Any help appreciated.
Cheers, Dunlata

Hi, The spelling is different, here he is on the IGI

John McSephny 4 Sept 1857 Father John Mother Helen Morton There are a couple more
McSephny with different spelling on Batch No. C115831, but don't think they are siblings.
You will also get John now on Scotlands People with the McSephny spelling.
Happy Hunting

Hi me again,
Could this be the marriage of Johns parents
John McSephney m 17 June 1856 St Quivox, Newton, Ayr married Helen Martin
(again different spellings) It would be worth the download of John  b1857 from Scotlands People to
confirm his parents and date of their marriage

Many thanks for pointing out the change of spelling.  As a result have now been able to obtain birth registration at Scotlandspeople.

Thanks again, Dunlata

Hello Dunlata,

Your John McSephny, born 1857. you say you have got his birth certificate, did it say for sure what his mother Helen's, surname was ie Martin, or Morton, both names would sound quite alike its only a case if whoever registered the birth could not read or write then it may have sounded like a Aryshire, dialect to the register.

I think the parents were indeed John, and Helen Martin, this couple had at least three more children in Ayrshire,

Margarert Mcsephny, born 21/Aug, 1859. Colyton, Ayr,
James Mcsephny, born 16/May/1864, Dalrymple, Ayr,
Helen Mcseveny, born 30/April/1866, Kirkmichael, Ayr.

The marriage for John Mc*evny, and Helen Martin, comes in 1856. St. Quivox, Ayr.

If you get this marriage it should give both sets of parents for the couple.

I think John's, father was named John, also, and his mother Elizabeth.

The spelling of John's, surname has lots of twists, and is difficult to reproduce on the IGIs. soundex system.

If you get the marriage i should be able to confirm his parents, and maybe Helen Martin's, parents also.

Regards,
Jonn.

hi Dunlata, John McSevney b.1857 is a member of our family.  how're you getting on with your research?  I remember my grandfather talking about John having settled in Antigua and his visit home to Scotland with a box of pineapples :-)
We've found lots of different spelling for the name

If you look at my tree on ancestry  (tree name Ellis you will find John McSephney) he is a direct descendant of mine.

Hi Crocus, you've made a good job of it  :)  i tend to be very wary of on-line trees, especially ones that are in a major site.  so many of them just seem to be copies of one another and in some cases, very badly researched.  not so yours!  :)

I notice, here, http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/5901559/person/77081786, you've got
Elizabeth Dalton McSevney McLinden  listed twice, one b.1894 the other 1898.
The 1898 birth is the correct one.  here's a transcription of her birth lines
"Birth lines 1898 [hard copy], RG644/09 entry 675, Elizabeth Dalton McSevney McLinden, b.7am, 18 Apr 1898, 44 Cleveland st, Glasgow; father: Thos McLinden, Tailor & Clothier; Mother: Mgt McLinden, MS McSevney m.31 Aug 1880, Girvan. Informant: Thomas McLinden, father, present."

I've also now got 8 kids for John Martin & Margaret Shaw. I can send you that info if you want.  needing to head for my pit now.  let me know.

Hi Fionagal

Still a lot of work to do on my tree, but I try my best.

The McSephney clan are one of the hardest families to trace because of the variations in spelling the name due to the Scribers,  and most people of that time not being able to read or write.

I was in touch with John McLinden 2/3 years ago and we were going to work on one big tree, but I have not been well and haven't been back in touch with John which I am ashamed of.  I am now retired and have all the time in the world.

I know what you mean about on-line trees I always do the research, sometimes I might copy something I haven't got - but I always check it out with the certificates, and google -  so many people have got it wrong.

I have been working for over a week trying to find Elizabeth Dalton's death; so far no luck.  I don't know if maybe  it is the spelling of her surname, as I have found at least six variations of this; or if it is her christian name - maybe she was known by a derivative.

I would like you to get in touch - *

Talking and sharing is a great thing.
