Hi
Can anyone locate Charles Henry Ogbourne on the 1891 census please? I've only been able so far to find him in 1901, with his wife Albertina (born in Austria) living in Holberton. Charles was born in London.
Many thanks
Jayson

Jayson - hi there
On the 1901 census Charles' daughter and grandson were both born in India, the later in 1896.
Do you think therefore they weren't in England in 1891 ? Can't spot them on that census :(
-
Hi Mum
On reflection, I think you might be right. I wonder how long they'd been in India, and if there is another avenue I could try?
Jayson
-
Jayson - hello again
Do you have access to census ? If so, here he is in 1861, I think
RG9. P. 90 Fol. 21 Pg. 43
If not - come back and I'll post the details for you
-
Hi Mum
A thousand thanks for this. ;) ;D If it's not to much trouble could you post me the details here?
Jayson ;)

No problem -

Well, Jayson - something seems to have gone amiss in 1851 :o :o
HO107. P. 1479 Fol. 902 Pg. 48
5 Roehampton Street, Westminster
OGBOURNE
Matilda Head M 29 Accountants wife B. Exeter, Devon
Langley Son 8 B. Islington, Middlesex
Kate Marie Dau 8 B. Kennington, Middlesex
+ Mary ann and Jane Skinner age 18 and 15, house maid and nurse maid.
W.W. Ogbourne 50 Accountant B. Guildford
Prisoner in Queens Prison, Southwark, Middlesex :o
The other prisoners all seem to have professional occupations - accountants, surgeon, merchants etc. I wonder was this a debtors prison? Especially since Matilda seems to b OK and managing ?
I think Charles Henry was in Portsmouth with an aunt and uncle:
North crop Place, Portsmouth
Henry Sutherland Head M 61 Artist and Picture cleaner B. London
Ann ~ Wife M 62 B. London
Charles Henry O?bourne Nephew 13 Scholar B. Middlesex Kensington
However, the surname is not clear, and there does not seem to be a Charles Ogbourne b. 1838

:o :o :o WOW! what a turn up this is! This is the last thing I was expecting to discover. What fun! I wonder what William was inside for? Dodgy accounting perhaps? ;D
My interest in this family comes from the marriage of James Bayley of Willaston to Constance Theodora Mitford Ogbourne. They married at Holberton in 1907. He was a commander in the Navy and she was the daughter of Charles Henry Ogbourne. I was wondering if she might have been in some way related to the notorious Mitford family. I see from the 1861 census that there was a Francis George "Mutford" perhaps it might be Mitford?
Thank for all your help with this, Mum. I really appreciate it. ;) :D

Well - I can't see them in 1841, nor after 1861.
William Webb Ogbourne death registered Q3. 1863 Hampstead.
Birth registrations found:
Langley John Q1. 1842 Clerkenwell
Katherine Mary Q4. 1847 Lambeth
Stewart Reinald Q2. 1854 St Giles
I can't see a registration for Francis George at all between 1851 and 1854.
-
Thanks for the extra info ;) I've found - your've found I shoud term it - more in one day than I usually find in a year. ;D
Jayson ;)
-
You're very welcome :D
One more bit:
William Web Ogbourne married Q2. 1838 St. Luke, Middlesex Vol 2. Pg. 247 to Matilda Amelia Lewis.

Jayson - if you google Charles Henry Ogbourne you get two references to Augustina from people who are also searching the family.
They are differing in details, but it seems her maiden name was Dowlean or similar, and both agree she and Charles were married in Calcutta in 1865.
One has her born in India, the other says she was Hungarian :o
-
Jayson - I googled Queens Prison.
It was originally the Kings Bench Prison, holding those convicted of defamation, bankruptcy and "other misdemeanours " (not specified!) and used as a debtors prison until 1860. It was remaned Queens Prison in 1842.
It was in Queens Prison that Mr Micawber was imprisoned for debt in Dicken's David Copperfield.

Hi Mum
Sorry that I haven't got back to you sooner. I will certainly see what else I can find on goggle. Was it in 1851 (census) that William Ogbourne was looked up?
Jayson :)
-
Hi Jayson -
Yes, he was "inside" on the 1851 census.
there is another thread running on here at the moment about the prison when it was caled Kings Bench Prison, and someone has given some links to names and misdemeanours of the inmates - you might find that useful.

Hello Jayson,
It appears that William Webb OGBOURNE began having financial difficulties in 1841 and continued all the way through the 1850's. There is a great series of notices about his plight on "The London Gazette" website.
It is one of my favorite resources for official information about any of my ancestors who were in business (and some who were not but are mentioned in wills, etc.) The best part is that the site is free and has a goldmine of info.
You can get there through a Google search for "London Gazette." When you get to their website, just click on "London." At the bottom right of the next page where it says "Archives," click on "Historians." Finally when you get to the search page, go to the bottom and type in "William Webb Ogbourne" in the middle slot where it says "exact phrase." You do not need to put any date limits on this particular search because they all come back with your precise ancestor. Sometimes the scanning is off and you need to try different variations of the spelling, etc., but it is still a great resource.
Hope this helps with his story and your search.
Sarah

:D :D Cheers Sarah! Thank you so much. ;D Will have a look to see what it has to say. Info such as this puts so much flesh on those old bones.
Oh! and welcome to Rootschat! :) Hope you find it as useful as I have over the past couple of years. Everyone here is really friendly and helpful.

William web ogbourne was my granddads granddad :) Very interesting findings thank you.
My granddad was Henry Arthur Langley ogbourne, who was born in India (ring any bells!).#
I need to do a lot more researching.... I was under the impression from my mother that her family was India for the export trade.
The family came back and forth quite a lot from india, the family tradition was to send the boys to http://www.marlboroughcollege.org. They would board there. (if you look at censes you will that William , Charles, and Henry all went there.
Some of the family, untie, uncles and cousins were still in the UK, as my granddad would stay with them on term times. Portsmouth, Middlesex and reading where the different places the family lived.
By the way Charles Henry Ogbourne was my granddads dad.
Yes I do believe that the wife of Charles was Hungarian, think that is why some of the family including myself have very blonde hair. (including my granddad)
My biggest goal is to find the families original manor house in Wiltshire in ogbourne or very near.
I know that my granddad knew where it was and wanted to buy it back, but unfortunately he died in 1994 (age 82)
Henry had two daughters my mother Julie ogbourne and Susan ogbourne both born in Brighton.
He moved here after the war when he met my nan, to help he’s niece set up a restaurant.
I have noticed quite a lot of interest in my family which has helped me out loads, a few people have been looking for the relatives who worked for them as nurses and maids.
Any information I can find I will more than happy to share. It’s just so time consuming....

I've just stumbled across this thread and am hoping to find out more about my Ogbourne ancestors! My ggrandmother was Lily Isabella Amanda Maria Ogbourne, born in Burma in 1859. I think she is connected to Charles Henry Ogbourne in some way, but I can't find any concrete evidence. The family story is that she was disowned by her father when she married my gt grandfather James Welch in India in 1879, and that she lost contact with her family. If any Ogbourne descendants have any info I'd be really interested in it.
Thanks

Hello, I’ve only just found your messages on Rootschats R.E. The Ogbournes, my mother (Agnes Maud Irene Ogbourne) was a daughter of Albertina and Henry Arthur Webb.
My daughter made huge family trees and I will check dates etc.
My mother had a brother Langley.
My brother Michael Leigh and I (Angela Doriel) were her children.
Are you still searching through family history?
My phone number is 01364 72313
All the best, Poppet (Angela) Hall.

Hi Angela, thanks for your reply. I’m still trying to find info about my gt grandma Lily Ogbourne and whether she’s connected to your Ogbourne family. Any info you have would be brilliant! I know her parents were George Bowen Bell Ogbourne and Isabella Amanda Duncan, I think Lily’s mother died when she was quite young. I can’t find any records of any siblings or other family members, I’d be interested to know who is in your tree. Thanks.

Quite by accident, last year, I discovered that Charles Henry Ogbourne’s daughter, Mabel was married to the nephew of the famous poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
