I am trying to find out about the birth of Joseph Savage around 1811 in Reading Berks. According to the census he was married to Mary and had 4 children but I am having difficulty getting any further with his family or his wife who according to the records was either born in Ireland or Middlesex.

The 1851 for Middlesex shows their eldest child as aged 4 b Middlesex so they married after 1837
Have you looked for a possible marriage on freebmd as a copy of the marriage cert will show his fathers name and also Mary's fathers name
If there is more than one marriage match - a copy of one of the childrens birth certs will give Mary's maiden name

Thanks for trying to help. I have looked for the marriage certificate but it is possible they married in Ireland as I have had no luck so far. Mary savage is my ggrandmother and I have her marriage cert but am stuck getting any further. I have used ancestry .com but the marriage records seem different for Ireland. I suppose it is possible they never married.

Hi
I think it's doubtful they married in Ireland but without Mary's maiden name it's not possible to find a marriage
In 1861 they were living in the Registration district of Pancras with a 9 yr old daughter Sarah
This is a possibility
Births - Sarah Savage June qtr 1853 (not 1852) Pancras Volume: 1b Page: 16
You could send for a copy of the birth cert with a condition on your application that you only want it if parents were Joseph and Mary
If it's the wrong one - the GRO will only charge a search fee of £3
Alternatively - you may want to consider this option
Search by GRO
If you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and have found more than one reference to the name you are researching, or are unsure which is the entry you require, the GRO offer reference checking online.
The charge is £7 for action on the first entry, which includes the cost of the certificate, and £3 for checking each subsequent reference against the information you have provided. You have the option of asking them to either stop at the first reference which agrees with your information or to check all references
You must give them one piece of information that you are sure will appear on the certificate for example, the exact date of the event or a parent(s) name(s). You must fill in the reference checking sheet which is accessed by pressing the reference checking button near the bottom of the page, and fill in all the fields that you would like the entry to be checked against before
you press the 'Submit' button. A certificate will only be issued if the entry they check matches the checking point you give them.

Thanks. I have the maiden name of Smith but I can't remember where from so can't depend on it. I have checked marriages but can only find one in Lancs which is Maria rather than Mary.
