Hi, ive found my great great great grandfathers death certificate, he was killed on 5th august 1886, in the riotshaw seam in no.2 pit, bredisholme? colliery, Bothwell, it says on rce, he is in oldmonkland church yard, was just wondering if anybody has any pics of this, cemetery,? i have emailed the grave yard people, but to date no reply from them.. thanks, Rob

Hi rob,
Are you sure it's Old Monkland Churchyard?
A burial in 1886 would more likely to have been in Old Monkland Cemetery unless the family aready had an existing plot/lair in the Churchyard.
What was your gt/gt/gt grandfather's name? I have bits and pieces of info from both O.M. Churchyard and Cemetery so I could have a wee look.
If it was North Lanarkshire Cemeteries you contacted, they're not the quickest at getting back to you!!

Hi im sure it says church yard, can send you a copy of rce if you like, His name is Robert Mullen b-1832 - d 1886 his wife is Helen Colligan, b-1835 d-1896 .. just had another look, says cant make name out? saw body old monkland churchyard

I've had a look at a copy of a transcription done in 1881 of Lair/Plot owners in Old Monkland Churchyard but there were no Mullens or Colligans listed at that time, but of course that was five years too early!
I only have bits and pieces for the cemetery (which is huge) but unfortunately, no Mullens or Colligans either, so I think you'll have to wait for N. Lanarkshire to get back to you.
Would it be possible to crop the image just to show the bit you can't make out then post it here? That way, more folk could have a go at seeing if they could make out what was written and hopefully it won't breach any copyright laws. Don't post the whole image - that does breach copyrights.

Hope this works, not edited docs or images much, so here goes. sorry i tried to place it on here?

You managed it fine - well done!
I think it says the following:
"The roof of his working place falling about him causing instant death. Dr Mills, Baillieston, saw body.
Old Monkland Churchyard. No Undertaker. Procurator Fiscal's Office. (Signed Alex. Lindsay, Procurator Fiscal)."
I'm not 100% sure of the rules and regulations regarding deaths of this nature but I imagine because it was an accident/death in the workplace, that would be why the Procurator Fiscal's Office was involved.
As for the 'No Undertaker' part - I have no idea what that means. It might have been the case that the body had to be interred immediately and that the burial was in common ground (e.g. ground laid aside in the Churchyard for people who didn't already have a lair/plot or couldn't afford one) This is purely speculation on my part so could be completely wrong. If the burial was in common ground, there won't be a stone but for your records, the Cemeteries Office should still be able to give you some sort of details.
I believe there is a way to investigate Fiscal Records but I have no knowledge how this is done. Hopefully someone else will read this thread and be able to advise you.

Hi Rob,
If the Plot number is Plot X then its in the common ground at Old Monkland.

Is you gt. grandfather in Old Monkand also?
If so, I can send you a map showing the layout of all the Sections. It doesn't show where each Lair/Plot is but it would help you to figure out where you were going now that you know the size of the place.
If you want a copy of the map (which is just a photo of the map at the Cemetery gates), send me a PM with your private e-mail address.

Hi Anne that map is brill, shows were he is , if he is a common grave, i think its a bit harsh being killed at work, and having a common funeral, his son Robert b1853-d1889 died in drumpark fever hospital of typhoid, wonder were they buried him then, does not mention anything on his death cert, , my great grand father is Roberts 1889 son who died in 1960,he is buried in kilmarnock hes the one i have the lair document for,

If you click on my name at the left of one of my posts, that will open a new window. Scroll down till you see "Send this Rootschatter a Personal Message". Click on that line and that again will take you to another window where you can type your message.
Sounds a bit complicated but it's not!
I've sent you a 'PM', so scroll up to the top of the screen and where it says "Welcome back crookedtail", you have xxx messages, 1 is new. Click on that line and you will be directed to your Personal Messages. If e-mail addressed are exchanged this way, it saves spam etc. I have given your my e-mail in the PM so you could send me an e-mail direct.
