Many thanks for your reply. We have been to the cemetery but couldn't find what we are looking for. It is for a stillborn baby born in 1925. We have been to the records office in Edinburgh but it wasn't necessary to register stillborns till after that. I was just following a hunch that he may have been buried with one of her family (Simpson or Wyse)

Hi Norrie!
I am trying to find the family of my grandmother, Bridget Murray Gorman or "Betty" , Born Dec. 30, 1898 in Lochgelly, Scotland (or Cowdenbeath) . She had a younger sister, Elizabeth, or "Peg"
Her mother's name was Reilly, I believe, and she died age 42 of dropsy in Lochgelly, Scotland (or Cowdenbeath) .  Is there a Reilly in your collection of photographs which might be a match?. Can you tell me where i might find information to track down the maternal side to their origins in County Cork? Also, I heard that the father subsequently remarried and had more children with the second wife.
Thanks!
Linda Hammond

Hi!
Diddy just found that information (which I didn't have!) so-
my great grandmother was (1901 census:)
Bridget Gorman (nee Reilly)  Head. age 22 b. lochgelly (1879)
and
Great-Grandfather was Edward Gorman, married 31/12/1897 Auchterderran

but from 1881 census:
Michael Reilly h. 46 b. ireland (1835)
Bridget Reilly  w.36 b. ireland (1845)
Mary          "     d.  5      Auchterderran (1876)
Bridget       "         3      Auchterderran  (1878)
Catherine    "        7mth   Kinghorn       (1880)

There's a difference in her birth year from one census to the next. If she lived to 42, as my grandmother told me, she'd have died around 1920-1921
Her husband, Edward Gorman, remarried feb 18th 1921 lochgelly, listed as widower. I wonder why Bridget was listed as the head of the household in the 1881 census if she was married to Edward and subsequently had another daughter...

My great-great grandmother, Bridget Reilly  w.36 b. ireland (1845) is whose maiden name (possibly Murray??) I'm trying to discover. as she must be the one who came from Cork - the story is that she was the eldest of 3 children, who were the only survivors in their family of the potato famine, and she arrived as a girl in Lochgelly with a younger sister and brother in tow. She was born the year the famine began- i wonder if this makes sense.

I have some photos of my grandmother, Bridget Gorman, and her family on a site I created for my father after he died, if anyone's interested.

Thanks for helping!!

Linda - Although Bridget is listed as head it just means Edward was elsewhere.
dates vary slightly because of census date. think Bridget died in 1920 - after Catherines death obviously - as I have given you Edwards 2nd marriage as 1921.

Linda, my last posting on this as i am going away for a week: SP

Bridget Reillys death:
died 4/8/1915 age 75 (this makes birth year 1840 - diff -but often happened on census getting dates wrong - think this more likely)
widow of Michael Reilly  54 high street, lochgelly

father:  edward Murray farmer  decd
Mother: bridget murray ms moore?  decd

off A. 1901 census from above address:
33 high street,lochgelly

bridget A reilly head b. abt 1841 ireland
mary reilly        da.    b.1876 Auchterderran
+ 2 boarders

photo of famine on other posting.

have enjoyed the search - you now have plenty to go on

I have good reason to believe my Great Grandfather George Stein Dryden was buried in Lochgelly in 1902. He died on 29 May 1902 at 21 Gardiner Street. His father was John Dryden and mother Mary Stein. His wife was Mary Hetherton. His son George, a coal miner in Lochgelly, was in attendance at his death. Have you any suggestions how I might be able to find where he is buried.
Alex.

Hi Alex I have photographed the headstones in Lochgelly all 1100 of
them and can see no Dryden Stones, this does no mean he is not
buried there but he has no marker.
the only DRYDEN headstone I have is in Falkland Cemetery
inscription reads

227   Johnsten  DRYDEN died 1953 age 79
Wife Frances McNEILL died 20.9.1963age 86

Many thanks.

Cheers,

Thanks for checking Norrie...The McCrum family was from Shotts/Holytown area of Lanarkshire but yes, James and Isabella are probably buried in Lochgelly.

James Robertson d 07 Jan 1946 in Lochgelly.  He was the son of Henry Robertson and Elizabeth Blair
Isabella Robertson (nee McCrum) d 30 Apr 1923.  She was the daug of Isaac McCrum & Jane Adams.

It is possible that there are other issue of Henry and Elizabeth Robertson buried at Lochgelly but they were originally from Lasswade, though I see that some settled in Kelty.  Anything you manage to find would be most appreciated.

Sage.

I've found further information regarding Elizabeth Blair Robertson...she was married to John Armit and after marriage in Lochgelly in 1914 John & Elizabeth settled in Newmains, Lanarkshire.  Unfortunately, John Armit succumbed to the Spanish Flu in 1918 so Elizabeth returned to her folk in Lochgelly but she never remarried.  I suppose it's possible that she was buried in Cambusnethan cemetery with John.

However, I have discovered that John & Eliz had a daug, Isabella McCrum Armit in 1914 and that she married Robt Scott.  She died in Lochgelly aged 53 in 1967.  Is it possible you have a headstone for her?

When Eliz Armit (nee Robertson) died in 1949 the informant was Henry Robertson, son of Lochgelly but I have no information about him.

I have information on the Robertsons as i am descended from Henry robertson and Elizabeth Blair. Being a close knit coal mining family they moved around with the work. When one of the Naysmiths became a colliery manager in Fife his relatives followed -i.e Robertsons. I can even remember my granny saying she lived in Lochgelly for a while before returning to Midlothian.
