one of my ancestors gave his occuption as rope making in the early 19thcent in Sutton in Macclesfield no records anywhere of this industry taking place ther any ideas thanks ::)
-
Only thing I can think of is that rope/jute/silk use similar methods of production - perhaps it was a "spin off" from the silk mills at Macclesfield.
Also about that time the Macclesfield canal would have been built and the boats would have used lots of ropes.
Nearest rope makers I know are Chester and Glossop.
Not much help - but something to follow up!!
Cheers

Hi June,
In the Pigot & Co Commercial Directory of 1834 a George Booth of Fountain St, Sutton (Macclesfield) was listed as a Rope and Twine Maker.
There was also a George Leversage of Chester gate(Macclesfield).
Hope this helps,
Odessa.

We are at present researching George Booth and descendants as My Great Great Grandmother was Sarah Anne Booth from Sutton Parish in the borough of Macclesfield Cheshire. We have information taking the name into the Goodwin, Smith and Hall families of Macclesfield
