Title: ScotlandsPeople Marriages after 1932
Post by: mikemackean on Sunday 13 July 08 09:27 BST (UK)
Is there any news of the release of the Marriage Indexes up to 2006 on ScotlandsPeople?

I was so excited when the Birth and Death Indexes were released, but notice the Marriages haven't yet caught up, even though they stated "the marriage indexes will follow shortly".

Hello Mike,

the Scotlands People  User Group, of which I am a member, tests new datasets before they are released to the SP site.  We found that some records were being duplicated, which is why they were not released at the same time as births and deaths.

We have been told that indexing between 1967 and 1988 was done differently to other years, and this has caused problems with some records.

Regards,

John

I am new to researching for Scottish ancestors.
I am looking for the marriage of George Hill and Catherine Balloch, probably in Peterhead in 1947 or earlier.
I was disappointed to find that the ScotlandsPeople marriage index only goes to 1932.
Could someone point me in the right direction to find a record of this marriage, so I can get the marriage certificate in Scotland please?
Thanks

Hi Sophie  :)

It really depends where you live. The records are available in Edinburgh and to view at other records centres in Scotland:

Official extracts from the Scottish records may also be obtained from local registrars of births, marriages and deaths, etc.

However, you can also order by post from the GROS in Edinburgh. This link explains how:

Thanks for the reply Gadget
I live in Lancashire, so a personal visit is not possible at the moment.
The couple were born in 1912, so the marriage could have occurred any time between 1932 and 1947.
I was hoping there was an on-line database where I could find the date of the marriage and a reference with which I could then send for the certificate.
Will the GROS search for the marriage or do I need to specify the year?
Thanks

You could try this site first:

I think that if you phone the GROS, they might give you some idea of search charges, etc.

Good Luck
