I cannot get any further back than Henry Matthews, Warburton Matthews, Thomas Matthews, Daniel Matthews. They were brothers and settled in the Maryborough area in the 18th century. There are some records at St. Peters Church, Maryborough. I am not sure why the family went to Laois, perhaps they were planted, or went with the army. I have been able to trace the family from the early 19th century through to this century. I am going across to Laois next year to see if I can find any records for the family in the 18th century. The further back you go the harder it is to find meaningful information.

Maryborough is in Laois, Ireland, and is now known as Portlaoise.
Robert, Charles and John have been the most common christian names.
Could Rourke be O'Rourke and could your Matthews be spelt Mathews.

Ronnie and I have corresponded for many years. Last September we met up in Portarlington. He is a most knowledgeable  and amicable gentleman.

As you say a very nice man, I met him earlier this year when I was in Portarlington.

It was Ronnie who told me that the tendency was to Catholics to be Mathews with one "t" and for Protestants to be Matthews with two "t" in that area

Yes, I would say that 2 T's for Church of Ireland. In some of the early records the name is misspelt, so you have to double check.

Many of the names are in Coolbanagher Parish.  I have been collating the records.
