I'm hoping for some opinions about some IGI records and where to go next please
I have found records for William Shephard (Shepherd) b 1811 but I cannot tease out which is the right one or if they are the same person even
The dob of 1811 is from Census records so its a flexible date
(Brotherton is a tiny place now and I imagine was small then too)
Batch C109362 IGI name Shephard
There is Wm ShepArd b 13/1/1811 chr 14/1/1811
Wm Shepard b 13/1/1811 chr 14/4/1811
Wm Furnish ShephErd b 15/1/1812
Wm Furnish Shepherd chr 16/2/1812
Both Williams have parents William and Sarah
It also appears both married women called Hannah too! (Wadsworth or Deplidge)
I know the children of the Wm I'm looking for are:
Sarah Ann
George
John
Mary
Hannah
Emma
I cant find the way thro and would be grateful if some one could offer a suggestion or pointer please

Hi Indigogirl,
I’ve suspected for some time that you and I were going to end up looking for the same family – I watched your Edward Edwards thread for a while……in fact I’ve just checked and I have it printed off on my desk….because of uncle George Shepherd.
Just to clarify, my great, great grandmother, Sarah Shepherd (b.1810, Brotherton) married William Wild (b.1806, Knottingley) and had 9 children, of which only 4 survived into adulthood, including my great grandfather James Wild (b. 1847, Knottingley).
This may be good news for you, but I have the St Edward, Brotherton Baptism Indexes for the period 1748-1895 and am also puzzling my way through the Shepherd families.
I have come to the conclusion that there were at least 2 separate William & Sarah Shepherds in Brotherton, both having children and, luckily, overlapping at times. (This is the only way I could distinguish between some of them!) I’ll list what I have and you’ll see what I mean…….
Children baptised to William and Sarah at St Edward, Brotherton:
William (Shepherd) 06 March 1796 (poss died 1810 – buried age 14)
John (Shepherd) 04 Feb 1798 (poss died 1800)
Esther (Shepherd) 13 July 1800
Samuel (Shepherd) 17 April 1803 (born 16 Mar)
Sarah (Shepherd) 14 April 1805 (born 24 Feb – died 1807 age 2)
Mary (Shepherd) 13 Sept 1807 (born 9 August 1807)
Mary (Shepherd) 25 Oct 1807 (born 11 Sept 1807)
Sarah (Shepherd) 29 April 1810 (born 02 Apr)
William (Shephard) 14 April 1811 (born 13 Jan)
William Furnish (Shepherd) 16 Feb 1812 (born 15 Jan)
John (Shephard) 08 Dec 1813 (born 11 Nov) (father labourer)
Susannah not baptised at Brotherton but Burial 1815 (inf) gives abode as Pontefract late Brotherton!! Poss baptism @ Pontefract 9 March 1814.
Tabitha (Shepherd) 10 June 1816 (born 09 May)(father Waterman)
John (Shephard) 11 Jan 1818 (born 14 May 1816)(father Labourer)
George (Shephard) 24 June 1821 (born 11 Mar 1819) (father Labourer)
Sarah (buried 16 June 1821 – infant)
Ann (Shepherd) 23 June 1822 (born 31 May) (father Labourer)
Elizabeth (Shepherd) 19 Mar 1826 (no birth given) (father Labourer)
(Sorry about being all higgledy-piggledy - they were in nice neat columns in my original document!! :D )
Well I think that's enough for one posting! Let me know if you'd like anything looking up in the indexes.
I think this one might need a look at the original records to see if anything further is given so that we can sort them out. What do you think??
Sally :)

I had a go at trying to sort these Shepherds out last week when it was first posted..but 3 new notepads later I gave up........LOL ;D :D
Good luck

:D :D :D
I know what you mean, Jane.
I'm having enough difficulty myself, and one lot of them are my direct ancestors!!
I've hunted out all my scraps of paper (!!) from the last time I was searching.....and I'm really annoyed at myself, 'cos I have noted a marriage of William Shepherd to Sarah Taylor on 24 Feb 1807. What I haven't done is note down where I found it !!!
This tiny bit of information made me think that the "split" started at the 2 Mary's in Aug/Sept 1807....which helps me not one jot in deciding whether "my" Sarah (1810) is one side or the other!!
Oh, well! Back to the drawing board. ;)

Thats a comprehensive list Sally. I need a bit of time to digest it properly
Its been tying me in knots! At one point I wondered if there was a spelling differential Shephard/Shepherd/Sheppard etc?
Have you seen the Brotherton site? Lots of good info on the Wadsworth side there but no-ones been brave enough to untangle and post regarding the Shepherds
I made the mistake of casting a few miles aside for Wm Shepherds and they are all over! Long Preston, Sherburn, Pontefract.
-
From the IGI
Looking at my scraps I also have William Shepherd christened 6/3/1796
Parents William and Sarah
Wm Shephard b 24/2/1807 married to Sarah Taylor
Wm Sheph christ 18/8/1771 parents Sam and Susannah.
I seem to remember having a thought about one lot having slightly more atypical names too.
Jane -- thanks for trying!
-
Is this your Sarah then?
Sarah (Shepherd) 29 April 1810 (born 02 Apr)
I've favoured this one as mine
William (Shephard) 14 April 1811 (born 13 Jan)
Based on that reliable genealogical source - we share a birthday! Ha
-
:-\ Yup, I know......very prolific some of my ancestors!
Digest away, my dear....if you have any lightbulb moments, just let me know. ;D
As far as I can see, the spellings don't seem to be doing it for me, sadly enough.
However, I did find a tree on Ancestry that had a William Shepherd marrying a Sarah Furnace (?? William Furnish Shepherd ??) in 1793. They had children listed as:
Robert 1794, William 1796-1810, John 1798, Esther 1800, Samuel 1803-1892, Sarah 1805-1807, Mary 1807, Sarah 1810. William F 1812, John 1813, and Tabitha 1816-1879.
I hadn't got to the stage of putting all the info together too much. I think I tried to contact the person, but didn't get a reply.... :'(
I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this.....or die trying!!

Yup, that ones mine!!
Strangely enough - mine's on their wedding anniversary!!

If the Ancestry tree is correct, one of mine would be the other William F...but who knows.... I need to see it for myself!!
Sally :D

Bit spooky!
I've got a tree on Ancestry - its the one where half the Shepards are accompanied by a question mark! A bit like a Shepherds crook come to think of it.
I know as far as I can that William b 1811 married Hannah Wadsworth 24/10/1835 and their daughter Mary was the one that married Edward Edwards.
Are you thinking that Sarah was Williams sister?
My best guess at this point is that Wms parents are the Wm and Sarah Taylor.
Side issue - barring my Welsh connection my ancestors are from same places as yours. I even have Suffolk in my direct line which isn't listed
-
Have you looked here?
http://www.brotherton.org.uk/html/surname_index.html
-
I've just had a look at an Ancestry tree with the Furnish/Furnis/Furnace connection.(lorelleshepherd?)
I guess this is the one you've seen too.
Hundreds of Sheps - the ones with the atypical names like Tabitha etc
I think these might be yours then.
-
That tree hasn't been modified since Sept 2006. Its unlikely there'll be a reply I suspect.
It looks like the Furnace Shepherd is a union between 2 families. There;s even a Tabitha Smith marrying a Furnace and creating the Tabitha Shepherd down the line

Hi again.
I think I just broke Rootschat :o
I posted at the same time as your latest post and then it went all freezey on me!
When I tried to pm you it told me I had already posted to you, so if I have then sorry for repeating myself!!
I was just saying that I think the William F probably more mine - but I'll bet they're cousins or something!! All just speculation until proven one way or the other.
Anyway, for now, I've got to go to bed, early start tomorrow. I'll bet I can't sleep now, what with William's and William F's going round in my head!
I'll be back again tomorrow after work - last day for the summer!
Goodnight
Sally

No pm's and no duplicate info.
I think it froze as I was posting too - I had same thing happen !
Also my last day at work for the summer tomorrow - and not before time
Tomorrow it is

Hello again Di,
Sorry for delay in getting back – life, it just gets in the way sometimes!!
Well, I can’t say I’m much further forward with the Shepherd family – so I decided to try and corroborate the tree from Ancestry, but I’m finding it inconclusive.
This tree lists Robert as William and Sarah’s first child, and I can find an extracted entry on the IGI for him, born 24 March 1794, baptised 31 March 1794, parents William Shepherd and Sarah Furnace, but the location is Sherburn In Elmet. I know it’s not that far away, but seems a little odd, unless the actual records give a bit more info than the indexes. Certainly, the Brotherton indexes don’t give Sarah’s surname at all. Having said that I can’t find a marriage for William Shepherd and Sarah Furnace in Brotherton, either (or Pontefract, which was more usual) so maybe they did migrate in.
Why, oh why, weren’t there proper censuses in those days – much easier to confirm movement etc………
I wonder how the Ancestry tree owner came to this conclusion, especially as I tend to agree with their version of the next 6 children, up to one of the Mary’s, though it’s difficult to decide which one with their births being so close together. Even the occupations of the 2 William’s (waterman and labourer) don’t seem to help much in this case, either.
No….I think I’m stumped, just going round in circles. Perhaps I’ll have to have a trip up to see the actual records, to see if anything else can be gleaned from them, though when that might be I’m not sure.
Well, more pondering to do.....
Sally :D

Hi Sally,
Do you have anything in PR's that would corroborate the marriage of William b 13/1/1811 to Hannah Wadsworth?( I'd like to eliminate the other possible Hannah Deplidge if poss)
I guess a maiden name on birth or chrst record for their children is too much to hope for
(I have them together as family in 1851.)
William Shepherd b: 13 Jan 1811 Brotherton, Yorkshire m: 24 Oct 1835 Brotherton, Yorkshire d: 20 Dec 1856 Ferrybridge, Yorkshire ( Possible Father: William Shepherd Mother: Sarah Taylor)
m Hannah Wadsworth b: 20 Oct 1814 Brotherton, Yorkshire d: 05 Apr 1858 Castleford, Yorkshire
Sarah Ann Shepherd b: abt 1838 Brotherton, Yorkshire
George Shepherd b: abt 1840 Brotherton, Yorkshire
Mary Shepherd b: abt 1842 Brotherton, Yorkshire
John Shepherd b: abt 1845 Fairburn, Yorkshire
Hannah Shepherd b: abt 1847 Fairburn, Yorkshire
Emma Shepherd b: abt 1850 Fairburn, Yorkshire
Brotherton/Fairburn/Sherburn - plus working up and down the canal - I thinks its a real possible for either or both Wm Shephds. Altho its a little odd i agree.

Hello Di,
Baptisms in Brotherton give:
William Shepherd, son of William and Hannah, born 15 June 1837, baptised 09 July 1837, fathers occ Waterman, abode Brotherton.
Sarah Anne Shepherd, daughter of William and Hannah, born 17 March 1838, baptised 16 April 1838, fathers occ Labourer, abode Brotherton.
George Shepherd, son of William and Anne, born 29 April 1840, baptised 31 May 1840, fathers occ Waterman, abode Brotherton.
Burials in Brotherton give:
William Shepherd, infant, abode Brotherton, burial 13 Aug 1837.
There’s no baptism for Mary 1842 ish, so they may have moved on by then, or not baptised her, or whatever….. and sadly no mothers maiden name given in the indexes.

I dont know if this will be of any help but I also have Sheperd but from Ferrybridge. The CHurch is called Ferry Fryston but in Ferrybridge.
My Sheperds are Samuel born 1828 Ferrybridge in 1881 he was living in Castleford married to Mary A they had children but they dont seem to tally with yours. But I thought you might cast your net a bit further out of Brotherton.
