Hi there
I am in the UK so a little green to all this Oz stuff. Can anyone tell me what sort of information the BMD indexes reveal on the online.justice.vic.gov.au site.
I have just resolved a long standing family rumour that my grandfather's half sister went to Canada. She married in Toronto in 1890 but in the process I believe several of her husband's siblings settled in Victoria and Tasmania. It appears from the UK census that two siblings were actually born in Victoria, the family came back to the UK, but three siblings appear to have returned to Oz. Family name is Tingman. I have hit 22 matches on the site for the name Tingman but as this research is at its very early stages from the Oz point of view, I am wonder what I might glean from the indexes only.
Anyone also know whether if I pay with my UK card I am likely to incur currency exchange charges on the site.
Any assistance you more knowledgeable folk out there can give would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Denise

Anyone out there have the name Tingman in their family charts, probably Victoria and Tasmania. James Edward Tingman had several siblings, some actually born in Oz 1850-1860, others in Birkdale, Lancs, UK late 1860-1871. Particularly interested in Henry Havelock Tingman b Victoria about 1861, William Alexander Tingman b Lancs abt 1869 and Robert Tingman born Lancs about 1871.
Any leads or suggestions about finding them 1880s onwards much appreciated. By the way, nothing obvious on ancestorsonboard.
Cheers

Hi Troods
That's absolutely brilliant. They are the family I am looking for. Couldn't find a marriage in the UK so guessed it might have been Australia. Found James Tingman on an unassisted passenger list to Victoria, aged 37 for Mar 1853. Have the UK 71 census where he is a general agent. Son Henry Havelock with grandfather, William Walker.
You are a star ;D Thank you so, so much.
Just picked up your further message whilst typing this. Looks very interesting. Thank you so, so much again and again and again.
Cheers

Hello there
Victorian certificate do contain a lot of information
The Victorian system of registration is one of the best in the world, there is plenty of useful information on both the certificates and the indexes.
What you'll find on a Victorian certificate of birth, death or marriage:
Births
Date and place of birth; name of child and whether present or not; name of parents (including mother's maiden name); occupation of parents; ages and birthplace of parents; date and place of marriage of parents; previous children of their marriage noting living or deceased; signature, description and address of the person who gave the information; names of witnesses; date and place of registation.
Deaths
Date and place of death; name and surname; occupation of the deceased; sex and age; cause of death, duration of illness, medical attendant by whom certified and when he last saw deceased; name and surname of parents (if known) including mother's maiden surname; signature, description and address of the person who gave the information; signature of deputy registrar, date and where registered, when and where buried, undertaker whom certified; name and religion of Minister, or names of witnesses of burial; place of birth of the deceased and how long he or she resided in the Australian colonies or states (stating which), name of spouse, place of marriage, age at marriage; names and ages of children of the deceased.
Marriages
Date and place of marriage; name and surnames; conjugal condition, whether bachelor or spinster, widow or widower, stating date of decease of former wife or husband; children by each former marriage; birthplace; occupation; age; residence (present and usual); parent's names of each party (including mother's maiden name) and occupation of father; signatures of the parties and witnesses; signature of Minister. Prior to 1963 the date of termination of previous marriages of the parties is also shown.
If you give us the names we can look up the details up the BDM disc to establish the right family that will save you a bit of money as you will have the registration numbers
You must certainly would have the currency converted from Australian dollars to English pounds
regards JEnn

Many of us have the indexes on disk for the bdm's in Victoria....to saye you the cost of searching we could detail the names for you.
Is it your TINGMAN lot....I could pm them to you if you wish. There are a number of registrations before your timeframe.
Some names may help ;D
Cheers

Hi Denise,
http://www.archives.tas.gov.au
Look for Family links index and type in your name.
You will see3 Tingmans..
One of them is William ALexander T. b. 1868 who married Ada Honora Mckenzie in 1898.
There were children, though I have not the resources to tell you all their details, but one was named Jack Kenneth T. and was born in 1899.
I found his service history digitised on the National Archives search site. By 1915 when he enlisted, with Ada as Next of Kin, the home address was in Malvern Victoria. You can read a letter from Ada asking the AIF that h be present with the family for Xmas!
There is another boy enlisting too named ROy McKenzie T. Also mother ADA is NOK.
It looks as if they did not stay in Tasmania all their lives and as yo say, chn. will have been born in Vic.
Others will give you much more specific material, but I hope you enjoy these bits for a start.

Hi Denise
As mentioned by others, you can save the cost of accessing the indexes with a query on RootsChat, as the same index is available on CD. The Victorian birth indexes contain parent names (well at least the mother, sometimes not the father), death indexes contain parent names (if known by the informant) and marriages show both parties names. Some early ones also give a birthplace for the couple. If you decide to buy a certificate - details are as given by Jenn - $AU17.50
As far as the exchange rate is concerned, I think credit cards charge a small fee on top of the exchange rate, but it is usually somewhat insignificant. You should be able to get details from your card supplier. With the current exchange rate, the 99cents would probably be less than 50p. $17.50 would be 8 to 9 pounds. There are conversions available online. If you do use the online index, remember to give the query in a manner to return as many entries as possible that you want from the one query. A full page of index records costs the same as one line.
Apart from the Family links index at the Tas archives (taken from their early index to 1900) some folks on RC also have CD indexes for Tasmania. The AVRI which you can buy from the LDS in England for 7 pounds has the Tasmanian index to 1899 and the Victorian index (with a mixup on some locations) to 1888. A more recent Tas CD has information to 1930 (I think)
I do not see a birth for William Tingman in Tasmania - but it may be misspelt. Some of the information at the archives assumes details from other records e.g. birth date assumed from age at marriage
These are the Tasmania records I see to 1899 - but I haven't checked alternate spellings
Henry Havelock Tingman (aged A) married Ellen Mabel BOYD (aged A) 10 Jan 1894 ref 429
Frances Isabella Tingman (aged 27) married Benjamin John PRESCOTT (aged 27) 7 Sep 1897 ref 918
William Alexander Tingman (aged 30) married Ada Honora McKenzie (aged 28) 21 Dec 1898 ref 738
Early Tasmanian certificates do not contain as much information as those from other Eastern States.
Trish
Edit: Hi Cando - after typing all that I wasn't going to delete it to read another thread ;D - now I will probably find it all listed elsewhere.
-
Hi cando,
Ah, yes. Looks like it is details on the Victorian events benzon is interested in now. She has been advised on the Tasmanian details as you have linked.
Sue
ADDING. Can't remember whether you have already got.....
Interrment. Tingman, ADA HONORA aged 88 18/2/1956 at Fawkner Crem/Cem. Alone. Cremated.

Hi Everyone
What can I say but wow and wow again.
Time difference here means that I have just crawled out of bed so haven't had time to go through all the postings properly yet. But this is all so, so fantastic. This is the information on the Tingman family that I have -
Children of James Tingman b abt 1815 Scotland and Sarah (on another posting Troods has given me their marriage now in Victoria)
Mary E Tingman b Australia 1856
Frances J Tingman b Australia 1859
Henry Havelock Tingman b Victoria 1861
John Edward Tingman b Birkdale, Lanc 1866 (he is the chap that went to Canada and married my grandfather's half sister)
William Alexander Tingman b Birkdale, Lancs 1969
Robert Tingman born Birkdale, Lancs 1871
Troods has actually found a few more for me too. I had already found the Nominal Roll for WW2 but, of course, the aim would now be to trace those back and see where they fit in.
Really, really intrigued with this lot and their wander lust especially as my feet remain firmly in Hertfordshire where my grandfather's half sister was born. ::) Anything else anyone can come up with would be absolutely great.
Am out for most of today so might not be able to get back to you all straight away but you can be assured that it wont be sitting around for long without a reply.
This site is such a wonderful tool and the generosity of people is so very much appreciated.
Thank you all for your input and time.
Cheers

Hi,
I am still not quite sure what you are looking for in your
Tingman lines, but I noted the following in case it is of interest.
William Percy Tingman when he joined up aged 18 for ww1, said he was born in Townsville, Qld and his NOK was Robert Tingman.
I am assuming [always dangerous!] that he is your Robert Tingman born 1871.
A look at Queensland's bdm records shows a marriage of Robert T.
1896/1998 Duncan, Louisa Matilda. Tingman Robert.
Also Birth.
1897/C11101 Tingman Louie. Father Robert Tingman. Mother Louisa Matilda Duncan.
1897/C11283 Tingman, William Percy. Father [as above]. Mother [as above]
Death. 1896/C436 Tingman Louie. Father [as above Mother [as above]
So the family did move about.
By the time William Percy enlisted, the father's address was in Melbourne.
Look also for Frances Isabella Prescott, 45 year old nurse in ww1. W. Tingman, sister in law, is her NOK.
She was born 1870 in Gisborne and married in Tas to Benjamin PRESCOTT according to Tas Family Links.
Sue
Edit to correct mother surname.

Hi,
I found a picture of Roy MacKenzie Tingman in his regiment days. VX51019
He is the one last on the right, front row I think.
Had to shrink the link.

Hi Sue
Grateful thanks again. Not really looking for anything specific. Until 24 hours ago all I had was the marriage of a Henry Havelock Tingman in Tasmania from the IGI and the fact that I couldn't find them on any UK census return after 1881. Inclination was therefore that the family had returned to Australia which very much looks to be the case now. I can now look at all the info everyone has so kindly provided and start piecing it all together.
Just picked up your further message whilst typing this. Your are a star.

John Edward Tingman b Birkdale, Lanc 1866 (he is the chap that went to Canada and married my grandfather's half sister
re this quote do you have the death of this couple?
regards Jenn
-
Hi there
John Edward Tingman married Honor Elizabeth Ward, Toronto 1890. John Edward died Quebec 1909 age 43 late of the Royal Canadian Artillery. Believe Honor was in Worcester, Mass, US by 1943 (in Champlain NY 1920 and 1930 US census) but have not found a death for her.
This part of my family history had no real 'stories' but over the last few weeks I have pieced together much of the Canadian side and although the Tingman side is only via a marriage, it is all so very interesting and intriguing.
Cheers for now

Hi! I do a long shot. i am from Sweden, and my family here is alone with our name Tingman in hole country. I know some relatives migrated (to USA), some we have tracked some not. The man how took the name Tingman in Sweden was a Tingman (Gustav Svensson) born 1774-01-16.
