Good morning all!
I'm researching the above family name, in particular, William (b. abt. 1815) son of James. Second marriage to Ann Burke occurred abt. 1864 in Altrincham. They had several children, including daughter Mary, who married James Hampson of Stretford, Lancashire.
I'm also interested in other relatives of James & William Darbyshire. Including descendents of Henry, Richard, James, Thomas, Philip and John who lived in or nearby to Ashton upon Mersey around the 18th century. James & Thomas moved to Urmston, Lancashire by the mid 1750s.

Hi!
William Darbyshire married Ann Burke in 1867, it was a civil marriage in Altrincham, and registered in Trafford.
If you would like to send for a certificate for them, go to the following site, if you click on the reference number at the side of the marriage, you will be able to print out a copy of the form with reference details on, and where to send for it.

Hi
Ive just recently started a new line of research, Darbyshire, so far only confirmed back to 1885. So far one problem, too many William & James! Current data gives locations of Ordsall and Salford with marriage links to the Broome family.
William b? was a sergent in the Lancashire Fusiliers - possibly also a wheelright, two sons known William b1885 & James b?
Any chance on this vague data a correlation to your research?
with anticipation, thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your message.
Yes, there are a lot of Williams and James (as well as Henry, Philip and John). I hate to think how many Anns and Marys there are.
Hard to tell whether we're researching the same group of Darbyshires.
Perhaps, I should give you some more details of my lot. During the 1800s the Darbyshires were in Ashton upon Mersey and Sale. The eldest daughter, Mary, married in 1888 to James Hampson of Stretford Lancs, which I understand, is not too far from Salford and Ashton upon Mersey. I think some of the Darbyshire boys remained in Cheshire. I think brother Philip was well known in the area, often seen with his horse and cart transporting farm produce.
The 1881 Census lists my family at Chapel Lane Ashton upon Mersey.
William b.1815 Ashton upon Mersy ("AuM")
Ann b. 1845 Ireland (2nd wife) (1st wife Hannah?
dghtrs Sarah & Ellen??)
William & Ann's children-
Mary b. 1868 Sale
Henry b. 1871 Sale
William b. 1872 Sale
Philip b. 1874 AuM
James b. 1879 AuM
John b. 1881 AuM
William Snr died 1889 Chapel Lane AuM
Nearby in Chapel Lane AuM also resided
James b. 1817 AuM
William b. 1855 AuM (son)
Alfred b. 1863 AuM (son)
William (b.1815) and James (b1817) are probably related but I have not confirmed this.
Over yonder at Derby Rd., AuM is
Humphrey b. 1824 AuM
William b. 1858 Partington (son)
Humphrey b. 1864 AuM (son)
Joseph b. 1866 Partington (son)
Not to mention James and his son James, also at Derby Rd. Born 1841 and 1877 respectively.
There are a few more Darbyshires in Green Lane.
My impression is that my Darbyshires were connected with farming, including labouring.
I've tracked 2 families in the early 1700s headed by a Richard and a Henry. I haven't as yet definitely connected my family to either Richard or Henry, but it looks to be a reasonable option that Henry may be a forebear, but time will tell.
It is a possibility that some of Henry's sons moved to Urmston, which may be in the Flixton parish, of Lancashire in the 1730-40s.
Hope I haven't bored you too much.
Given the popularity of the surname, it would not be surprising that our families are linked somewhere in the past.
Good Luck and Good Hunting

HI
Reading about these Darbyshire has awakened my interest in this side of my family I have always known there was a distant connection to the Darbyshire's. Sylvia Robinson of Moore St Stretford married phillip Darybshire ( probably of Ashton on Mersey ) in 1894. If anyone has more details I would be please to hear from them

Hi Alan,
I don't know whether my Philip D b. 1874 is the same person as your Philip who married in 1894.
If I find out they are the same, I'll forward this onto you.
All I know is that whilst Philip D resided in Ashton upon Mersey, his elder married sister Mary resided in Stretford, and at her home many Darbyshire family gatherings occurred there.
All the best

Hi
Over the couple of days I have been researching the Darbyshire best I can on the internet, I have noticed that the majority of the spellings are Derbyshire, even your Philip b 1874 is spelt De on the 1881 census (Family Search) that seems to tie in with the marriage to Sylvia Robinson 1894 although there are 2 Philip Derbyshires who Married in the same quarter in Barton on Irwell in which Stretford was part of. The Derbyshires of Stretford lived at Wellington Farm and were hauliers. I have found a Sylvia Derbyshire on the 1901 census but no mention of Philip, living in Bauguley, which is not far from Alrincham in fact All the places that have been mentioned on these postings are close. tomorrow I will go to the Family history in Sale and see if I can find anything further

Hi Alan,
Yes, there have been many different spellings of Darbyshire over the generations.
Regarding William Darbyshire, who I have mentioned before, his MC was 'Da' but his Death Certificate contained 'De'. On the other hand, the BC for his daughter Mary, contained 'Da'. Also, some of the Darbyshires that resided in or nearby to Chapel Lane AuM, had MCs with the 'Da' spelling.
Regarding the Census, it was not uncommon for the householder to be unable to write and therefore, the spelling would be the enumerators call.
Some of the variations I have come across besides 'De' are-
Darbishire
darbieshire
darbeshire
darbishier
darbieshier
I have even come across a Drabishire which may have merely been a spelling error.
Also, the spelling would probably have been dependent upon the parish clerks too.
Good Luck and Good Hunting at Sale.

Hi Alan,
I've obtained a little more information on Philip Darbyshire. Yes he did marry and have children, but I do not have the names. With some luck, maybe later.
Apparently he had a farm on Chester Rd., Stretford.

Hi Maxine
Sorry I have been long winded, I did go to Sale but found nothing new on the 1901 census so I bought a voucher pressed all the right keys and that didn't bring up the right info so I have been waiting for support to contact me. Sylvia Darbyshire nee Robinson living in Baguley seems to the right one, she would be my grandmothers cousin, but I cannot find Philip whether he was away for the night or had died who knows at this stage. I did managed to confirm what I knew about the family, as in my teens I played table tennis with the youngest ( who I believe is in Oz ) I really don't want to put names on here as I don't think it is fair without thier approval
bye
Alan
the farm in question I have been in and have a photo

Hi Alan,
Shame about Sale Family History!
I quite understand your reluctance to divulge names.
Do you mean the farm at Chester Rd., Stretford and the farm you have stayed at are one and the same? If so, would you be able to scan your photo and send a copy to me via email?
cheers
Maxine

Hi Maxine
yes I can scan the photo and send it to you, And I think it is the same farm, but cannot be 110% sure at this stage, I did not stay there but I went in on a few occasions
Bye

Hi Amk,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your message. Unwell with a nasty virus but fortunately not the flu of any description.
Yes, I'm still interested in the Darbyshire line but over the last 3 years have been concentrating on another line in Stretford Lancs.
In respect of brothers, John & Philip Darbyshire, they are sons of Humphrey Darbyshire & Eliza Rawlinson.
John born & baptised in late 1851 AuM, married Mary Hayman in 1878 and died in 1895.
Philip born & baptised in aprox. mid 1859 AuM, married Sarah Hayman in 1878 but I have not followed up his death. Witnesses to their marriage were John Darbyshire & Mary Hayman.
Their father, Humphrey Darbyshire, is a younger brother to William Darbyshire (1815-1889) who I am descended from.
Good Luck with your research. :)
regards
Maxine Johnson
