Hi
Firstly apologies if I have misread this but I am new to this!!
Am I correct in thinking you are able to provide the inscripions to graves in Willington?
I am researching the Boleyn family & I know they lived in Willington. After a search of this site I found your listing for Boleyn.
If there is anyway you could give me details of the inscriptions I would be most grateful.
Many thanks

Hi Adam,
Just a quick question. Can you let me know where the church is for the Boleyn family gravestone? My mother & I will be coming to Durham next month & would like to go & see it. (If that doesn't sound too morbid!)
Thanks for you help so far.

Hi Adam,
Please could I have the Bainbridge info for Willington please. I thought there were some Armory graves at Willington, would it be possible to look (when you have time) if you haven't covered the entire cemetery please? In relation to my Hodgson, his 1st name was Feathers(t)on(e) rather than a Hodgson/Featherstone linked surname MI (hope that makes sense!)

I am looking for inscription for Shaw and Robinson at Brancepeth. Can you help please
-
Hello Eric. I posted the surnames for Brancepeth on the 24/Sep/08
So if you go back to that date you will see the list of surnames from gravestones.
If you do not want to do it that way you can always google it by just putting
(M Inscriptions Brancepeth) in the search engine.
One thing to keep in mind is that I do not do "cross postings"
ie requests for Willington only done on the Willington page etc
Has it happens there are no Shaw or Robinson gravestone (that are readable) at Brancepeth.
A number of gravestones at Willington have Brancepeth addresses.
The total number of Graveyards where I have posted surnames is 23

If you go to the first post on each thread ie post number 1 for Willington, you will see that I have listed all the surnames that are on the gravestones in that cemetery.

Hi Adamand, Could you please give me the inscription for Nichol.
Thank You. Regards. Linda.
-
Hello Linda. Sorry :( No Nichol gravestones for Willington.
I put down Nichol but when I had a look I saw it was for the last one at Crook followed by Willington.
So it should only be for Crook.
I do not think it would have helped you anyway because it was for a John James who died in 1847 and there were no parents names.
Adam
-
Thankyou, Adamand for your prompt reply. The Nichol at Crook would not be any help as the year is far to soon.
Thankyou for your help.
Regards Linda. :)

Hello Gillie. Lots of people read these messages so I think someone may pick up your Paxton webpage.
I have had a look and see that most of them are from the borders.
This one may have been a stray because it is the only Paxton name out of 10,000 or so inscriptions that I have.

Hi Adam,
Could you please give me the inscription for Hankey. Thankyou.
Regards Linda.
-
Hello Alan. There may be quite a few burials but there are not many gravestones.
Not many could afford them and of those that could, not many have survived.
Here's what I have :-
In loving memory of Florence, beloved daughter of Henry and Maria Atkinson, who died March/9/1922 aged 21 years.
In loving memory of John Raisbeck of Page Bank, who died April/2/1901 aged 72 years.
Also of Ann, beloved wife of the above, who died August/28/1911 aged 76 years.

In loving memory of Margaret Ellen, the beloved daughter of Henry and Hannah Reed of Oakenshaw, who died July/14/1900 aged 17 years.
In loving memory of Hannah, beloved wife of Henry Reed of Oakenshaw, who died April/7/1906 aged 51 years.
Also Margaret Ellen, daughter of the above, who died July/14/1900 aged 17 years.
There is another stone for Reed but I am afraid not a lot of it can be read. Here is what can be read
although words are missing and that may alter the meaning of the inscription so caution is advised.
Edward Reed husband Hannah reed who died Sunderland 1901 aged 77 years.
Adam
-
Hello Linda. Here is the only gravestone inscription for Hankey:-

Hi Adam
This is my first venture into Co Durham records and my particular interest is in the family of Joseph & Ann ROBINSON, who in 1911 claimed of 10 children born alive, only 4 survived. Cross-referencing with 1901, the survivors appear to be:
ROBINSON, Margaret 1877
ROBINSON, Thomas H 1880
ROBINSON, Joseph 1883
ROBINSON, Frank 1885
Of the 6 deaths, I'm only able to identify two possibles:
Elizabeth Ann aged 10 4Q 1885
Florence Isabel aged 16 in 4Q 1908
Can you please assist with any others, presumed infant mortalities, as they do not feature in any census? Joseph's occupation was variously Mason/Bricklayer/Building Contractor.
Margaret ROBINSON is recorded as the niece of Margaret RUTHERFORD of Beehive Hotel in 1911, so I'm already indebted to you!
dee-jay
-
Hello Dee Jay. I take it that the family lived at Willington at some time?
Were the children Margaret, Thomas, Joseph and Frank born on the dates that you give in your posting.
I will have a look at all the Robinsons that I have (over 100)
Margaret Robinson Beehive Hotel. Was that Willington?
Adam
-
Sorry, Adam, for not making my enquiry more specific.
The ROBINSON family appear to have moved from Market Place, Durham City, into Willington between 1851 and 1861, following the death of the patriarch - Francis Chisholm ROBINSON, a tailor born Framwellgate, who was married pre-1837 to Elizabeth born Durham [surname not yet researched].
The years I quoted for the 4 surviving children of their son Joseph ROBINSON & Ann [possibly nee WATSON] were consistent years for births given in consecutive census returns. All were recorded in Willington in 1911:
Thomas Henry with his parents Joseph senr & Ann at 18 Hutton Street 18 South Street, Willington
Joseph junr & wife Annie [nee BOWDEN?] & children at 19 Hutton Street Terrace
Margaret at Bee Hive Hotel, 42 High Street
Frank & wife Ethel [nee SCOTT?] & children at Bank Head
It is feasible that Joseph junr [born 1883] might have been a WW1 casualty as no further issue appear to have been born to his family unit post-1914.
dee-jay
-
Hello De Jay. Here is one that I think is yours:-
In loving memory of Elizabeth Jane, dearly beloved wife of Thomas Robinson, died 1st/June/ 1939 aged 59 years.
Also the above Thomas Robinson, died 22/July/1958 aged 79 years.
There are another three gravestones for Robinson at Willington and I think I will post them.
They may not be your Robinsons but it may help others who are researching the same name.
This is why I keep all the graveyard and cemeteries on separate threads. It makes it easy to do searches.
Adam
-
Thanks, Adam, but I can't place them with 'mine'. They appear to be the couple recorded 1911 at Commercial Street who married 3Q 1901: Thomas ROBINSON/Elizabeth Jane SMITH. They moved with son Thomas Sydney from Oakenshaw to Willington before the birth of Laura Annie 4Q 1903. Thomas senr was a Journeyman Plumber with Weardale and Consett Water Co and claimed Stanhope for his birthplace.
I'd be very interested in details of the other 3 gravestones.
dee-jay
-
Hello again. Here are the other three Robinson inscriptions at Willington
In loving memory of Thomas Robinson, died December/23/1932 aged 82 years.
Also of Elizabeth, wife of the above, who died may/5/1936 aged 80 years.
In memory of George, beloved husband of Catherine Jane Robinson, who died 26/December/1934 aged 72 years.
Also the above Catherine Jane, died 28/September/1943 aged 73 years.
In memory of Margaret laws of Willington, who died September/8/1860 aged 24 years.
Also Isabella, wife of Joseph Robinson of Willington, who died October/19/1867 aged 22 years
Also of Robert Laws of Willington, died January/4/1875 aged 69 years.
Also In memory of Jane, the beloved wife of Robert laws of Willington, who departed this life November/3/1877 aged 72 years.
That is the lot for Willington
I have searched for the other names that you mentioned without success. If there were gravestones at Willington for them they have not survived.
Adam
-
Thanks again, Adam. There could be a link to the Isabella ROBINSON nee LAWS if her husband Joseph ROBINSON remarried in 1871.
I've only recently embarked on researching the Durham ROBINSONs so a few certificate purchases are a must to ensure I've made all the right links. I've rarely encountered so many untimely deaths in one family after the 1860s.
I noted that the WATSON sisters who married into the ROBINSON and RUTHERFORD families gave their birthplace as South Hetton. I can't find it listed in Durham parishes on Genuki, so have you any idea of the likely parish church?
dee-jay
-
Here are the churches for South Hetton:-
Hetton (South)
Easington St. Mary (-1838)
South Hetton Holy Trinity (1838-)

Many thanks, Aristotle.

Can you please check if there are any MIs for the BOWDEN/BOWDON family of Oakenshaw/Willington:
FreeBMD Death 4Q 1885 BOWDEN James 46
GRO ref 1Q 1891 BOWDON Andrew 21
Andrew died in the Oakenshaw Mine - sole casualty in a rockfall documented on this website: http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/o002.htm

Hello Dee-jay. No surviving gravestones for Bowden/Bowdon.
I had a look at all the graveyards/cemeteries that I have posted and there are no Bowden or variation
anywhere.
There may be one amongst the ones that have been pushed over for safety reasons but they are usually face downwards and will never be seen again.
If you look at the first posting on each thread you will see a list of all the surnames that I have indexed in that particular graveyard/cemetery.

Thanks, Adam. Sorry to have troubled you. I'm on a steep learning curve on the industrialised North of England and I have a lot to learn!

Hi, Could I please have the information for the surname Toward? My ancestors are supposedly Towart's or Towhart's, but this surname does not appear anywhere, I thought this may be the next closest thing, thankyou.
-
Hello Fizz83. I have already posted the Willington Toward inscription on post number 114.

Hello Adam
I've recently discovered that I have some Poole ancestors in the Willington area and wonder if you could list the Poole MIs for me, please.
With many thanks

Thank you so much, Adam :)
I believe that James A(braham) was the younger brother of Jane Poole (on a look up thread). They were the children of my 3 x great aunt.

Hello Adam,
First ever post, so apologies if this is the incorrect way to contact you - but could I bother you for the Ludlow inscriptions, please? Any help would be appreciated!
Best wishes,
Sarah
-
Hello Sarah. Here is one that can be read. There is another that was very weathered and covered with lichen. Only a couple of names can be guessed at but no dates or ages.
In loving memory of Mary Hannah, the beloved wife of Edward Ludlow of Willington, who died November/18/1897? aged 24 years.
Also Mary Ellen their daughter who died in infancy.
Adam
-
Thank you very much, Adam! Shame about the weathered one though - I know it probably makes little difference, but do you know if they were they particularly close together (physically, in the churchyard itself)? And if possible, could I have those names that you gleaned from the other stone? Even without dates and ages, it may be helpful to place a couple of relatives as having been buried there!
Thanks again - it may be morbid, but I can't help it - this is exciting stuff!
Sarah
-
Hello Sarah. Here is what could be read on the other stone. You will see now why I did not include it in my last posting.
Wife of S??????? Ludlow
Charles ???Kernan
Also Ada.
Adam

Sorry for the late reply - and oh! I see what you mean about those missing (mystery!) names! But, they are obscure enough to be recognisable if I ever come across them in my research, so may be useful yet!
Thanks again for this info... wouldn't have the access to these MIs if not for you. Invaluable!

Hi, May I please see the Readhead inscription?
Thank you,
Kay Redhead.
-
Hello Kay. Just the one for Redhead:-
In beloved remembrance of my dear husband Henry Redhead, who died August/16/1946 age 52 years.
Adam
-
Hello again. There was another Redhead gravestone and here it is.
It is weathered around the age of the person but it looks like 60 years.
In affectionate remembrance of David Redhead of Pagebank, Oakenshaw, who died December??/1890 age 60 ? years.

Hello Adam, Hope this is Okay as it's my very first post. Could there be a problem with the transcription of John Foss Dawson as everything fits with my John Foss except his age. The General Register gives his age at death as 59 years. Could this have been misread as 89 years on the MI? I'm sure he's mine and I'm so grateful for your hard work and postings.

Hello Marie. Here they are:-
In affectionate remembrance of John Foss, beloved husband of Mary Ann Dawson of Willington, who died May/25/1910 aged 89 years.
In loving memory of Hannah Philipson, beloved wife of Thomas Dawson of Willington, who died 9/December/1907 aged 54 years.
Also the above Thomas Dawson, who died 26/September/1919? aged 78 years.

Hello Marie. When I wrote it down I put a ? mark against. I should have done the same when I put it on Rootschat. Take it as been correct at 59.
