Hello I have tried this before. I am desperatley looking for any relatives of the Bentley family who lived in and around Sussex/Surrey area. My Grandfather was Richard Henry Bentley and he died in 1969 and his wife Emily Mercy Bentley who died in Guildford Surrey in 1934. Between them they had seven children one of which was my mother Violet Gladys May Bentley who died in 1942 giving birth to me also in Guildford Surrey. I am hoping that there may be some grandchildren/greatgrandchildren that are still living .
Thanks Duchessanne :D

If your grandfather died in 1969 did he leave a Will? might mention children or grandchildren in it.

Hello thanks for your reply to my message. I would not know about a will as I only found all this family last year in May 2007. I know that the informant on Richard's death cert was his son Henry Richard Bentley who lived at The Orchard , Staines Lane, Chertsey. I did write to him but had no reply. Then I found that he had died in 1978 in Chertsey and he had a son Anthony Richard Bentley and he lived Mytchette, Surrey. I also wrote to him but again had no reply
So I am clutching at straws to see if anyone would have known this family

Hi
Have you thought about writing to one of the national papers to see if your can put an article in the paper asking for any living relatives to get in touch with you
Claire :)

Have you tried 192 ?
http://www.192.com/
You never know.............it has worked before, and only recently someone managed to get in touch with a family descendant.

Yes I have tried that one thanks anyway

Hi,
If you are living in the UK Channel 4 have a text service where you can place an ad. It's called something like Lost Touch. I think the messages stay on screen for a week.

i think A R Bentley died in 1990

There must be some way of doing this - connecting with family. Fraser and Fraser do it all the time! Costs in certs though, and time.
Have you been through the BMDs and got all the names of your mother's siblings, and tried to work them through, or is that a no-hoper?
-
Violet G M Bentley was b. 1908 in Petworth, Sussex (q3 1908 2b 903 ) so no mmn. listed which doesnt help tracing the other siblings for Violet, do you know the mmn ?
i found this marriage which is also Sussex
Marriages Q4 1903 Thakeham 2b 718
BENTLEY Richard
ELLIOTT Emily Murcy
so for children born to Bentley / Elliott matches Q4 1911 - Q4 1920 there are 10 scattered all over the Country but none in Petworth or Thakenham :-\
the only two round about this area are :~
BENTLEY Walter R mmn. Elliott Midhurst.2b 667 Q3 1912
BENTLEY Bessie E M mmn. Elliott Guildford.2a 175 Q2 1918

Hello,
Have you tried looking up death records for the other six children and contacting the informants of these. It may cost for the certificates, but I was able to find a number of living relatives this way.

thats a good idea, Sallylynne
I was waiting for confirmation fo Violets siblings names and then hopin to find a marriage for one of these and then children using the BMD.
it would be helpful if one of Violets siblings had an unusual name ;)

Over many years I have had fantastic success in writing letters to local papers when trying to find people related to me.
With my American Grandma I knew only her birthdate and that she had lived in Allegheny. PA. USA yet within a month of sending letters to numerous local papers I had three replies from second cousins. Contact with many other family members has grown over the years.
Sending letters to newspapers is the first thing I do when looking for anybody in a given area. It is surprising how many people reply who actually know the person/s in question.

Hi duchessanne,
It's just possible we may have a connection here! My ggrandfather Thomas Hood Bentley was born (1845) and brought up in the East End of London. The names Richard and Henry seem to have occurred in his background, and in fact he had two brothers called Richard and Henry (or Harry) about whom I know nothing, and he named his son Harry.
If you may be descended from either of these (Richard or Henry Bentley), do get in touch by pm! I will be offline for a few days now, but will check as soon as I am on my computer again for messages!

Hello Marie
Many thanks for message. My Grandparents all came from Sussex/Surrey area but of course I do not know anything about their brothers or sisters etc so there could be a link somewhere. I am going away for a few days so Iam not ignoring any emails that you may send but I will be in contact when I get back

To Toni
Hello I think things are getting a bit mixed up I have all the info on my Grandparents and aunts and uncles and I am looking for any grandchildren that may be still alive. I was hoping to find any children from Anthony Richard Bentley but cannot find out if he married but he has since died. There is a Edwin Francis Bentley who lived in Bideford and he was married to a Margaret Bentley. He died in 1990 in Torridge Hospital Bideford, Devon. I did write to his widow but had no reply.
many thanks

Hi
so do you know the names of the grandchildren then already and wives etc. your first posting suggests you do not.
what i meant was:
If you posted the names of Violets siblings we could follow them through the BMD and see who they married and then fins children for them
you can then use 192. com to find these children in the electoral roles

Hi Duchessanne,
I don't want to confuse things - if we have a link, it would be at the level of our g-grandparents. I wondered if my g-grandfather's brothers Richard or Henry could be your ancestor - from the East End, it is quite possible that they made good and settled in Sussex or Surrey, and one could be the father of your grandfather. I will wait to hear from you about this.
