Hi
I am new to this particular board and I am trying to help a fellow Aussie who is researching a James Lee who was tried at the above barracks on 24th Dec 1819 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. In particular she is wanting to find info on the barracks.
can anyone help please.
thanks

Hi Meegan
The problem is that there are lots of Portland Streets in the UK. Any idea of which city or the regiment?

I can't find any Lee who was convicted on 24 Dec 1819 but there is a James Lee convicted in Madras in late 1818. He may have arrived in Australia in Dec 1819 but I thought they normally shipped people quickly and India isn't that far away with a lot more traffic.
Would there have been a Portland Street barracks in Madras at that time?

I searched for ages last night, for a portland street barracks,i agree we need a bit more info ;)

4 years late with a reply..Portland Street Barracks. Was the barracks of the Grenadier/1st Foot Guards in london in 1814.

The one in London was used by all Guards regiments, not just the Grenadiers. Or another regiment may have been there, or it was merely used as a court.
But there may have been other Portland Street barracks elsewhere in the Empire.
