Good morning.
im trying to search for any information on;
charles beech,born,1865,died,1951,married,edith.j.(maiden name unknown)
my mum has possible links with these 2 people.
my mother was born,1936.she can remember visiting them at;
1 council cottage,catts place,paddock wood,kent.
although they fostered many children, they had 2 children of their own, daughter,Edith and Cicely.
mums mother Gertrude, lived with them, but her maiden name was, Brill.
after attending a funeral about 8 years ago,mum is 90% certain Cicely is her mothers mum.nobody wanted to discuss Gertrude(why she had a differant surname)?mum had heard a story, after gertrude was born edith(charles wife)ran from the village hospital with gertrude, back to where they lived.
my mum has always hoped she could find out if the Beech family are/were her grand parents.
we have tried everything we can think of.
i would be grateful if anyone could come up with anything to help.
thank.
chris.
i have just remembered, gertrude had no birth certificate.

Hello Chris
Do you have Gertrude's marriage certificate? If so, who does she name as her father and who were the witnesses?
The name of the father could be fictional but this information could give us some more leads.

In 1901 I can find a Charles Beach/Beech in Paddock Wood b about 1865 but his wife is Annans! They have 3 young children Charles, Ellen and Alfred.
This looks like their marriage
Dec 1891
Beech Charles Tunbridge 2a 1146
Wells Annans Jane Tunbridge 2a 1146
I cannot see a Charles married to an Edith.

There is a Cicely Caroline H BEACH born 1888 in Chelsea who would be old enough to have a child in 1908. Only Cicely BEECH/BEACH I can find.
Can you find her in the census Barbara.

Hello,Ian,Barbara.
Ican not thankyou enough for all your help.
as i said to Barbara,i was sending you a thankyou when a WARNING came up on my post.
Mum can remember after the funeral, she had a chat with 2 other people about gertrude.although they said they had no knowledge why her surname was differant, mum had a feeling they knew more about gertrude.
Ihave to say im sorry ,but i misunderstood about Cisely.
Mum told me she does not no who Cisely was,she just called her,Aunt Cis.
On my first message i mentioned, edith, charles fostered many children.
Do you think Cisely may have been one of those children?
One other thing i do remember,i was looking at the commonwealth war graves, and a Alfred Horace Beech,died,20 september 1915,aged 18.Grenadier Guards.
His parents names were,Charles,Edith.J,Beech.
Address,1 council Cottage,Catts Place,Paddock Wood,Kent.
Mum has told me that is the place she used to visit as a child with her mum(gertrude)and dad(Albert Watling).
One of the people mum spoke to was alberts and gertrudes bridesmaids, she was 9 years of age in 1934.
im sorry to say, there is no wedding certificate.

Hello again Chris
I think your best course of action is to buy Gertrude's marriage certificate.
These are the details you need to order it from the GRO
Sep 1934 Gertrude Brill Tonbridge 2a 3095
On line ordering can be done from this site
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
Once you have the certificate please let us know what it says and we will try to help some more.

Good morning,Barbara.
sorry i did not reply earlier.
thanks for your advice.
you are right in saying about buying a birth certificate.
if you dont mind, can i ask 1/2 more questions?
when nan(gertrude)retired,my uncle had to come home on leave,he was in the RAF,when she retired.
the reason was ,because she had no birth certificate for her pension.
would i get a copy of the original certificate?
the question i keep asking myself(sign of madness).
was there a chance ,gertrude was not registered?
chris.

Hi Chris
the question i keep asking myself(sign of madness).
was there a chance ,gertrude was not registered?
Yes, there is a chance that she wasn't registered although it was probably more likely that she was .................. possibly in another name or perhaps somebody just didn't want her to see what may be on the certificate for some reason thus led her to believe that she had no certificate - there is lots of scope for a "missing" birth certificate. The 1911 census should be readily available in the next year or two so perhaps that will shed more light on the matter :-\

Hi Chris,
I am the great Grandson of Charles & Annans Beech who lived at the address that you showed.
Unfortunately I have info. that strongly suggests your Grandmother, Gertrude, is not related to the Beech family. I believe that the funeral that your mother attended about 8 years ago was that of Edith Amy commonly known as Dop. The lady that your mother spoke to is my Aunt the Granddaughter of Charles & Annans, who was bridesmaid at Gertrude & Albert's wedding.
My Great Grandparents only fostered two children, Gertrude & Jim, they had 3 children of their own, Charles (my Grandfather), Ellen and Alfred who was killed in WW1. Ellen was known by the family as Sis (short for sister) which has probably been mistaken for Cicely. Dop was the daughter of Sis and a Mr Daniels who never married Sis. Sis did marry a Mr Norman.
I hope that this info. is useful.

Good Morning,Beacon Bob.
Thankyou so very much for your message.
I have not seen mum yet, but,i know she will be very gratefull for the info you have sent me.
My dad,1 of my sisters, and myself all went to Dops funeral.
I had met Dop,and your Aunt many times, two lovley ladies.
Gertrude passed away,1992,she had always thought she was a barnados child(we did get in touch with them,no records of her).
As you can see a lady did come up with the name,Annans which did throw me,as i mentioned earlier,on the commonwealth war graves, they have, son of,edith, charles.
once again, thankyou very much for message.

Hi Chris,
It's a shame that the connection to the Beech family appears to have come to a dead end.
My Aunt and Uncle visited our family over the Christmas break, I showed my Aunt the Rootschat dialog (she was absolutely gobsmacked!) and she provided the information that I sent you.
My Aunt did not know Gertrude's surname but she did think that she was a Bernardo's child since my Great Grandparents were receiving money from Bernardo's.
The CWGC entry is incorrect, I believe that the names shown against 'additional information' are that of my Grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth Jane (Charles being Alfred's elder Brother) who were living with my Great Grandparents for a while. Incidentally, my Grandfather was also in the 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards but was invalided out, I believe from the battle of Ypres, having been shot in the legs by a German sub-machine gun. He died in February 1978 from an unrelated illness.
Best of luck in your searches, we are still looking for past generations of the Beech family. We have got back to my Great-great-great Grandparents but I think that we need to spend some time with Parish Records for parishes around the Paddock Wood/Tonbridge/ Maidstone area (It appears that my family did not move around very much!).

I cannot believe that I have stumbled across this post!!!! Charles Beech was the first son of my GG Grandmother Ann Davis and her husband Thomas Beech. They had 6 children. William, Charles, Mary, Agnes, Emily and Sidney. When Thomas died, ay GG Grandmother remarried twice, and her 3rd husband Alfred Hider was my GG Grandfather.
I have been given all the family photos, and have one of Alfred Beech (Son of Charles and Annans), and some photos of Edith Beech, but have yet to figure out who she is! I am hoping someone can tell me, and I would love to share the pictures with you. They were sent to my G Grandmother Jessie, and are signed Aunt Edith Beech.
Cant wait to hear back from you.
I have lots of info on them, and as I live in Paddock Wood have spent many hours at the local public records office!!!!

Hello Julia.
As you can see,Beacon Bob has helped in my search for my Grandmother,Gertrude.
As i mentioned earlier, soon she will be looking through her old photos(after all this time putting them in albums).
Beacon Bob has raised a few memories, she is certain there may be 1 or 2 photos of Edith(Dop),with her mum,Gertrude, always known as Gertie.
One was,Ediths married name,Hall.
At Dops funeral,we met some of the children she fostered.

Oh My God! Like a previous contributor, I too cannot believe I have stumbled on this post.
My grandfather, Jim (James Wraight) was one of the children fostered! I have a photo of the Beeches (and from what I could see from a marriage certificate and other sources), Charlie Beech's wife was Annaus rather than Annans. I also have a newspaper article about their diamond wedding which is also fascinating...!
Charlie had no legs, and shuffled around on boxes. Apparently he was walking home from the pub on the railway tracks when he was hit - and although he managed to jump out of the way his legs were severed clean off. He wasn't found until the next morning, but the heat from the wheels had closed off the blood vessels.. and his legs were apparently buried by he side of the track!
I will write individually to some contributors, but there are also other mysteries that I appear to have the answers to... although I can't help the original reason for the post and her ancestry!
WOW! I'm still stunned!

In addition to what has also been said previously...
In the 1911 census (just out), Albert Beech is the couple's only remaining son/daughter still at home. It was filled out by Charles and puts him as the couple's son. Four years later, obviously, he would be 18 - same age as the Albert Beech whose parents were down was down as living at the same address - though it had EJ Beech as his wife, when it would be AJ (Annaus, not Annans as others have said).
So, looks like he died in The Great War after all
Marcus
