Hi All,
I am keen to buy the birth certificate of my great great grandfather Joshua Clark Evans. By way of the census I believe he was born circa 1849 in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire and I want to find out who his parents were.
Could anyone point me in the right direction, ie who do I phone/e mail/write to to get the certificate.
The same goes for my great great grandmother, Elizabeth Evans (yes she had the same name...which did confusing me for a while). She again was born in Welshpool circa 1852.
Many thanks in advance,
Russ

Hi Russ
The North Wales BMD have all the Montgomeryshire births up:
http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk
but I don't see him under Clark or Evans - I used J to include all spellings of his first name from 1847-1851 It could be that he wasn't registered.
Have you found him on the 1851 census when he might be with his parents?
The Welshpool Registrar's address is given on this page:
http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/birthinfo.html
Information about t he GRO (national records) is:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/home.asp

There are three unnamed male births registered Welshpool in 1849 ( Llansanffraid ym Mechain sub-district). These are usually those who die soon after birth and have not been named.

Thanks Gadget,
If you look down the posts you will find I have been trying for some time to discover more about him. The only time he has been mentioned on any census was 1881 and he puts himself down as being born in Welshpool.
I find it very puzzling he is not mentioned on any other census. I wondered if his father may have been in the army or perhaps a miner and he travelled with him...I doubt it but it may answer why he was in no census?? The only way I could see forward was to find his birth certificate and get the information from there but apart from that I think the trail may have gone cold.
Many thanks again,
Russ

Hi Russ
Were Joshua & Elizabeth married in Swansea June quarter 1874? If you obtain the marriage certificate this will give you their father's names/occupations and should help you find the correct birth certificates for them?
Heather
PS FreeBMD has the GRO marriage reference as Jun Q 1874, Swansea, vol 11a, page 981

Hi Heather,
Thank you very much for your reply.
What makes you think they were married in Swansea? 1874 does seem to be a good year since that is when their first daughter, Elizabeth was born, or at least circa 1874.
Elizabeth is down as being born in Welshpool again.

Hi Russ
I did a search on FreeBMD for a marriage between Joshua Evans & Elizabeth Evans between 1870 and 1881 anywhere.

Did he die before the 1891 census ?
I'm wondering if there was some name change or, as Hiraeth suggests, he lived abroad.

Thanks Heather and Gadget,
Yes he did die before 1891, in fact he died in 1887 in Wigan.
Heather, was that the only match in Wales between a Joshua Evans and Elizabeth Evans...if so it may well be worth taking a chance and getting the marriage certificate.
Thanks again,
Russ

Hi Russ
It's the only one anywhere that came up for a Joshua Evans & Elizabeth Evans on the same page in that timeframe. Of course that does not necessarily mean that they married each other or that they are yours :-\

Thats great Heather,
Thanks again for that.....I assume it would be a different address to the one Gadget posted, the Swansea Register Office perhaps....could anyone confirm this.
Cheers,
Russ

Hi Russ
Other than the quarter and year, the GRO reference (vol and page number) for the marriage will not work if you are ordering from the Register Office by mail. Genuki has the Swansea Register Office information as:
The Register Office, County Hall, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3SN.
Tel: 01792 636188. Fax: 01792 636909.
E-mail: registrars@swansea.gov.uk

However, if you order from a local office, you'll need to either obtain the 'local' reference for the marriage or ask them to do a search.
Local references and GRO references have nothing in common except the year.
I have checked the local Welshpool births for the two Elizabeths's births but there are too many in the approx. years to get a definite hit.
