Title: MATTHEWS in Cornwall
Post by: Peter Matthews on Friday 04 July 08 05:04 BST (UK)
Trying to discover any descendants in Cornwall of John Matthews (1761-1841) and his wife Jenefer (nee Tocker) - (1756 - 1817). Believe they came from the St.Hilary area.

Peter, Welcome to rootschat.
Sorry i don't have an answer for your descendants question but maybe it could help you eventually to get an answer if you put the names of those you seek on the Your Surname Interests board.  Go to the bottom of this page and clisk on the link.  Then very simple to add your names.

Good luck,
 charlotte

Hello Althea,
Many thanks for the info. What a pity that the marriage record didn't give us a few names - that may have answered many questions!! John is my g.g.g. grandfather. I believe there were other children - Jenefer, bp. Gwennap1797; William Tocker M. bp.1787 Gwinear; James born circa 1803; and maybe Samuel bp. 1802 Gwennap. One problem is that the same names reappear in each generation. I have been trying to find who John's parents were. Okay, he was bp. in St.Hilary in1761, but I haven't discovered any site which gives the parents names. I believe John died in St.Hilary in 1841, and Jenefer in Redruth in 1817.
The saga continues!!!
Many thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter
I was watching to see if they tied up with my MATTHEWS, but nothing yet..

Have you tracked each of the supposed children? their Banns are always hopeful and some marriages that may gie parents details

The William Tocker M obviously seems to fit, but means they were St Hilary 1785, Gwinear 1787, St Hilary 1789..not unusual for Matthews clan, like mine seem to go walkabout regulary :)

Hi Peter and Sue,

I see you both joined some time ago but have only just started posting, so, A Big Welcome to Rootschat and the Cornwall Board   ;D
We hope it will be a good experience for you both.

Thank you for your Lookup Offers Sue  ;D

Peter - The full record of the marriage would yield at least some witness names for you. The Phillmore's Transcript only tells us he was a husbandman. You could see if the opc has a copy of the original, or hire the film and view the entry yourself - available at a modest cost from your local LDS Family History Library, or, as you have the Parish and Date, you could purchase a copy of the entry from the CRO (lovely for the records)

Extracted Records

John MATHEWS was baptised 17 May 1761 St Hilary father William.

There are several other baptisms in St Hilary about this time listing parents as William and Hannah (Hannah 1749, Mary 1751, William 1754 and Peter 1757)

Don't see the marriage listed in St Hilary but there is this possible marriage

William MATTHEW = Hannah ROWE 31 Mar 1746 Gulval

Cheers Kris  :D

I think it is the same person Althea.  ;) Though the extracted record doesn't indicate his status John appears to have remarried in Redruth to Joanna AMBROSE 9 Jun 1822

Hi Kris
Was that Joanna from St Agnes?
1851 census
MATTHEWS   Joanna   Head   U   F   89   Pauper    Cornwall - St Agnes
"Piece: HO107/1918 Place: Penzance -Cornwall Enumeration District: 2d
Civil Parish: St. Hilary Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 103 Page: 39 Schedule: 134
Address: Relubbus Lane"

If there wasn't a mistake, maybe she was really unmarried, and a sister???? of John

Hi Althea and Kris,
Just amazed at all these messages rushing around the world. A bit of snow around today, so it was indoors stuff for me. Have just found the death of Joanna Matthews - 5 Feb. 1855 in St.Hilary. Her age was 93 which was amazing for those years.
My next move will be out to the LDS Library this week to order the film of those marriages. That might give me some positive leads.
Again, many thanks.
Peter

I'm sorry I can't aid anyone in their search but I'd like to place my lineage in this MATTHEWS thread.  Maybe there is a connection somewhere.

William Hosking married Elizabeth Matthews May 18th 1788 at Phillack, Cornwall. They had 3 children.
Catherine bp. 29th November 1789
Elizabeth bp. 29th April 1792
Richard bp. 28th July 1798

Their daughter, Elizabeth - 1792 - 1850 married John Trestrail 1784 - 1824. They had 6 children.
John Trestrail bp 7 June 1811
Richard Trestrail bp 13 Spetember 1812
Elizabeth Trestrail bp 12 March 1815
William Trestrail bp 8 March 1818
James Trestrail bp 7 May 1820
Thomas Trestrail bp 9 March 1823

Their son, William Trestrail, 1818 - 1904, married Eliza Powning, and they had 5 children.
Mary Jane Trestrail bp december 1844
Elizabeth Ann Trestrail bp 1849
Charlotte Powning Trestrail bp December 1855
Thomas G. Powning Trestrail bp March 1861
Eliza Emily (Minnie) Trestrail bp June 1866

Their daughter, Eliza Emily (Minnie) Trestrail, born 1866 had a son out of wedlock on Feb. 26, 1886. He was my grandfather whose name was Percy Powning Trestrail.

Eliza Emily Minnie Trestrail married a William Henry Jenkin in March 1893, and they had a few children.  William Jenkin died in 1908.  I did not know my grandfather had half siblings until I started searching my ancestry.  I know their second child was a son.
I'd love to find out who my grandfather's father was.  It is unknown but in some documents is the name Albert Trestrail for his father.  He had an uncle named Albert Trestrail.

I'd also like to know more about my great gt gt gt gt gt gt grandmother Elizabeth Matthews and who her parents were.

Does anyone have a connection to my Matthews, Hosking, Powning, Trestrail lineage?

Linda Trestrail
