Title: Indian Queen Arrivals
Post by: iang on Thursday 03 July 08 05:43 BST (UK)
Hi Folks,
I am trying to locate passenger list for the Indian Queen which arrived NZ 1856 I am looking for a family called Nairn, it would appear that there was a James and Christina Nairn parents and children John Liddle and Isabella Nairn with a Robert reputedly born during the voyage out in 1856. Can anyone give me guidance how to track this info?

Hi

Sorry to have to report, that amongst our very comprehensive array of online passenger lists, there is not a list for the voyage of "Indian Queen" to NZ 1856-57.

The vessel is recorded as having departed Liverpool UK on 1 November 1856 - arrived Wellington NZ, 30 January 1857.
Unfortunately also, there is no local newspaper, currently available for viewing online, for the years 1856-57 ( which may have published the passenger list).

The (newspaper) "Nelson Examiner and NZ Chronicle" of 11 February 1857 (at PapersPast website), makes brief mention of the  "Indian Queen's" arrival  ... 340  immigrants ... twenty two deaths, due to measles, occurred during the voyage.

Archives New Zealand (Wellington) hold copies of passenger lists, but I tend to think that had there been something available for the "Indian Queen",  then it would by now, have been published on one of the several NZ websites covering shipping lists.

I feared that might be the case, I have exhausted nearly every avenue that I know without success, thanks anyway. A miracle might still happen.

The Indian Queen brought 340 immigrants, and a number of other passengers. Twenty-two deaths occurred on board, from measles.

Interesting my ancestors arrived on this ship also surname Fitness. I have papers saying they sailed from Liverpool just says during 1856. It says Emma the mother died 1st dec 1856 and Joseph the father 8th dec 1856 both buried at sea. Of the six of that family only 2 got here in one piece. So that tells me it must have sailed sometime end of 1856. Im in NZ cheers Marlsea

Hi again iang

Well, well, well  !!     ::)       I have just discovered a partial passenger list for the 1856-7  voyage of  the "Indian Queen" !   (Your NAIRN family though, not listed).

I need to verify its source!      It gives me hope that somewhere, someplace, there is further information available.    :-\

Bear with me  .....  I'll do some further digging.

Hi Lu

Have ALL those boxes and boxes of passenger lists at Archives been transcribed??
Might be worth someone checking the card index.

Hi Bren     :)

Duh !    Silly me .... yes, it has just occurred to me that this 1856-57 voyage is rather too early to be amongst the already transcribed passenger lists at Archives, Wellington.

Hi iang

Still digging !

Just wondered if you'd made contact with the researchers at the worldconnect site ?   There are two ... possibly three, who have "trees" which include your James and Christina NAIRN  (and their descendants in NZ)  ?

Hi

.....    just a little more  ....

Have just spoken to the Early Settlers Museum at Petone (they're in my "neighbourhood").     Essentially what you see on their online database, is about as much information (I am told), as they have.    However, at the Museum itself, they have an inter-active display (on early settlers) which sometimes offers a few more snippets of info - some of which has been contributed by descendants ( and who in a few instances, have left their contact details).

The museum attendant checked a little further - sadly they have no passenger list for the "Indian Queen" ... and although they have a note of the arrival of "James NAIRN", alongside his name is the word "Anon".    (So, no further information on him, nor an indication of who supplied the details).

I have also just located the name of another James NAIRN (of Sanson), researcher - am hoping her e-mail addy is still valid ?      Will however send you the contact details, via a PM.

Hi Bren

A good question !    Bit of a "curly" one  too.   ;D
Can't answer it with certainty either.

Archives (Wellington) in their helpful little booklet (" Card Indexes") suggest that more information can be found in the help-binders (in finding aids section)  .... or "ask the desk archivist".    ::)      (Dates of passenger and immigration lists which have been indexed, also given in booklet.)

Incidentally, all those "shelves and shelves of boxes" (or the "boxes on those shelves and more shelves"  ) I thought, contained the REPRO passenger lists .    ???

[Now have a link for a chap who apparently holds a passenger list for "Indian Queen"  ....   am awaiting his return email].

I am also searching for a list of passengers on the Indian Queen arriving in Wellington, New Zealand in January 1857. In particular, I am interested in the names Glover and Walker.
