I have been looking for an age now to trace this relative. EDWIN CHAPMAN was the father of my Gr Gr Grandmother ELIZABETH. She married at Manchester Catherdral in 1852. His name is on her cert. It did not say deceased but as I can find no trace and nor can anyone else it seems, the suggestion was he was already dead when she married, although his job as a Finisher was on the cert too.

I have now been given the following info. But I cant trace it backwards to see if this is he!!!!

Can anyone help please???????  I would inagine the last one is the favourite, Unless he left the district.

Hi there, nearest I can find is a Manchester Cathedral baptism on IGI:

Betsey Chapman baptised 1st March 1835

Father EDMUND Chapman, Mother JANE (no other name)

Oh help, school collection time  ;D can someone else check an Edmund/Jane marriage or on the census?

Ew, got soaked just then - downpour right outside the school gates  ::)

Anyway what I meant to write was, might her dad's name be Edmund but the clerk misheard and wrote down Edwin?  I have several rellies with wrongly spelled names on certs, especially when they couldn't read/write themselves. Does the name Edwin appear anywhere else that you've found?

				Hi topmarx,
Bit of a longshot, but in  the absence of anything else, it might be worth a look:
Family living at Eccles, which I believe is about 4 miles from Manchester, on 1841 census:
 HO107  Piece 543  Book 5
Head of  family  Robert Chapman  b.1796
 Wife Betty b.1798
several children, one of which is Eliabeth born c.1831
The parents were married at Manchester Cathedral:
 Robert Chapman married Elizabeth Crossley
 14 Jul 1811  Cathedral Manchester
 Batch number: M005464
Father's occupation on 1841 is described as weaver.
This may be Robert in 1851:
 HO 107 Piece 2230 Folio 531   Lodger
But, there are one or two other Roberts.
Told you it was a long shot :-\
 Will keep looking.
 Kind regards,
 Paulene :)

				Hi again,
Just found this which shows details about weaving and finishing:
 http://www.maggieblanck.com/Land/WE.html
I know that 'finisher' is a broad term which can cover many trades, but there is a chance it could be describing a finisher from the weaving trade, with it being in Lancashire.
 Hope this helps.

				Thanks for trying for me.
I dont think Betsey is the one. Dont really think she would lenghthen her name. If it was the other way round I would think so.

I am told by another Chapman seeker that Robert is not the right one either as she has checked it.

Where can he be hiding? There is just no trace of Edwin!!
