Title: Exciting, not ot be missed opportunity!
Post by: emmsthheight on Tuesday 01 July 08 12:47 BST (UK)
Hi!

Barbara is an absolute gem!!

She's told us about a

free trial on "The Gale".

I've seen it elsewhere on Rootschat, but it's a huge database with entries in many newspapers, regional and national.  Mine were large regionals.  It also gives a full search with links to articles, and the search term is hi-lited on the scan.

I've just found thirty odd scans for two gggrandfathers of my own and one of my friends.  They my have been famous or infamous, but even just had announcements for marriages etc .

Time's limitted.  I couldn't just see how long or when.
Go to the link and give minimal info to register and you're straight in!

I got details for towns and cities in thios country and Australia.

Good hunting!

Barbara is an absolute gem!!

Any chance of a sticky for that particular phrase?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just replied to the other thread - if your 'preview' runs out and you find you can't access the site (took about 3 months with mine I think) just re-register, you can use the same email addy and everything.

There was a thread about this where I got the info from, thought it was in the Common Room but can't find it now.  The newspaper archive is truly wonderful.  It has Manchester & Liverpool area newspapers & many others - don't you just love reading the old adverts for hair tonic and the like?

Lovely sunny day now  - could do with a nice field or beach that has wireless access  ;D Anybody know of one?

Hi Thanks for the come back!

I was wondering about stickying the whole thing for a bit!  Including that line!

Afternoon sounds nice, but I think the next play will have to be a reward for doing some errands!

By the way, I hope it's okay with you, I've put it on the Cumbria board too

Thank you again!

I just put in my normal home details, and for 'institution' put 'home'.  A doddle.

It's a great site.

Is there anyway of copying what you find, or do you just have to print?

My laptop is playing up and won't load or open pdf's at the moment.  I keep getting a message about loading plug-ins for Irfanview, even though I was tryig to open the pdf with Adobe.

I'll get my OH to sort it out.  Meanwhile, I'm just copying out the info I've found by hand.  Very interesting, it seems my g.grandmother's first husband was sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment with hard labour, for stealing some rope from another boat owner.  Explains why the family moved from Lowestoft to Hull about a year later.

You also have the option of emailing the PDF's to yourself - this might give you an option to store them until you sort out your PDF problem.

I too think I have found the reason my great great grandfather was in prison in 1901 - need to confirm with other sources but it look s like him - a very very sad story.

This is an excellent site.  Whilst reading one article to see if it was a relative ( sadly not ) I found this article.

From the Bristol Mercury Monday 17 1826

E.M Page, 15, Wine Street, Bristol, reminds the Public that they never can have the opportunity of gaining a Capital Prize in the Lottery after TOMORROW, as on that day Six Pirzes of £30,000 will be drawn and then Lotteries end for Ever.

Little did they know the Lottery would go National one day.

Hi, yes I knew mine had been in trouble, now I have confirmed that as I guessed he'd been in prison, and not only that had gone missing when released under police supervision!

By the way, I've also found but not copied yet, quite a few of the entries I've puzzled about and even asked about on here, for my Irish Hoeys in Manchester, and Salford and their "Cousins" in Liverpool area.

The announcemernts are definitely not just for the well off, - even though they call themselves "Esquire"!  I've found quite a few moissing marriages, or ones which just say registrar attended without giving a church.

By the way, you can also right click on the image area you want and save it to a file then use imaging softwear to enlarge the bit you want.

Good hunting!

From the previous link to this site on RootsChat some months ago, I logged on and saved the site to favourites, and I am still able to access it after all this time.
I think that we all get the same login words - virtual and books.

Cheers,  Pat.

Post by: emmsthheight on Tuesday 01 July 08 22:53 BST (UK)
Hi Lizzie

Really glad you finally got your document!  Isn't it annoying when you're almost theree and can't get there.

Earlier on, I found two databases with biographies for my gggrandfather, but one wanted £5 by pay b
per view, and the other didn't say what it cost.

Neither  had a free trial or even an example.  Spo I don't even know if either was more than one line!

The Gale's great on a free trial, and at least if some day that ends, and I can afford it, I'll know what to expect and what a wealth of info is on there. and have an idea of the coverage.

Maybe some of the libraries will take up things like this as they have Ancestry.

Best wishes

First your e-mail address, then the log in is virtual and the password books.  It seems to be the same for everyone.  If that doesn't work, just re-register, I did and that was fine.  I didn't get a message saying I was already registered or anything.

Hi Olly

That's brilliant!

I hope the downloading goes okay!

I've actually started right click and copy and pasting the imege and also the publication and date etc into a Word Processing document.  then I can soon narrow down what I want, and I've just got one for each subject.

Good luck whichever way you choose.

Gale is a great resource, and it should (as it's in part a British Library project from what I recall) be open access, at least to UK residents.  I think you can access it for free at the British Library.

But - and I'm going to be a killjoy here - I really don't think we should be handing out passwords on a public forum.  It's the sort of thing that's likely to point out to the site's owners that access is being abused and precipitate them taking the whole thing down, tightening it up, or making it chargeable.

Sorry to lecture.  But it's a privilege that we're being allowed to access these resources free of charge, and if they set some registration procedures, then I think we should follow them.  Compare this to how much is charged by other companies, who've digitised other texts.
Title: Re: Exciting, not ot be missed oportunity!
Post by: Barbara.H on Thursday 03 July 08 20:36 BST (UK)
It is indeed a privilege.  And I don't want to fleece anyone, so I went right back to the Gale home page, looked again at the free trial feature - it can be accessed by anyone, not just academics and libraries, it seems.  I even read the terms & conditions etc and couldn't find anything that suggested signing up for the 'free trial' was in any way restricted; there is a 'request free trial'  link on practically every page.  I tried quite hard to find a 'catch', but haven't managed to so far.

Is access being abused? I'm not sure it is. As several Chatters have discovered, the 'password' and 'login' are the same for everyone. Seems to be the equivalent of applying for a library ticket. The database collection is massive, and  Gale/Cengage are a very big outfit.  http://www.cengage.com/   The online archives available in the free trial are a fraction of what they hold.  And some are free to view on other sites as well, like the College of Nursing journals.

I think making use of the free trial is the equivalent of using a freeview box to watch selected digital TV channels - if you want more channels  you sign up to whoever. Likewise here, if you want more databases, you take out a subcription.

 :) Barbara

Sorted out the problem with downloading PDFs, it was due to a new version of Firefox I had downloaded, defaulting to Mozilla, instead of Adobe.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have found a relative that was injured in a train crash, also a few obituaries.

One funny unrelated article was the marriage of an 18yr old male cork cutter. The "fair bride was the wrong side of half a century" The cheek of it. Lucky woman I say!!! ;)

Hi Scousemouse

I've just been in seconds ago - in fact I'm still in.

I used the link at the start of this post and filled in my email address and the sign oin name and pass word.

In fact I hac to drag my self away - I had a fielkd day, looking in the American papers.  Not only are there bmd's for relatives we may or may not know about, but there is one publication which regularly lists deaths etc for Irish Americans right across USA, with many funeral venues and some burials.

I'm sure you have, but the only thing I can think of is that is different from what I've just done is whether you yped the email correctly when you registered.

I hope you get in.

I am logged in for the first time right now but for some reason I cannot view the pages.  It is probably me having a senior moment but what am I doing wrong?..... or not doing?  I am attempting to view an article in the Leeds Mercury but I seem to be in a loop - when I press view article or page, or browse issue it just takes me back to the results page ie. no facimile.  Apols for being thick !!

I think the initial problem was that I wasn't logged in properly as I have now just received an email with login and password details.  However when I try to use these I am told they are incorrect!  The url they have given in their email for 'questions about this trial' leads no-where and is inactive.

I am getting frustrated  :(

Hi

I've had mine working ages, but I'm having the same problem as both of you using the link from their emails, tonight.

However, I've been going in from the link on the first message in this thread and using the details they gave me - I just checked again now.

That's been okay, though I got the odd strange mesage on the way.  It might work if either of you got as far as bookmarking it/putting it in favourites, but my isp's favourites hardly ever work.

You could try going to that first message abd doing the same.

Not what they said, but if it works for free like that while they sort out their prototype I'll not complain.

Good luck!

When you reply, highlight the  text that you want to change, and go the the BBC tags above the reply box, they are blue.  The seventh across on the top line is the one you want.  It moves..........click it and your highlighted text should have brackets around it.  example:

highlighted text

then preview or send the post

highlighted text

you can change colour, size etc

Hi

Ah, I've just realized what you mean!

The Marquee tool!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I've only just discovered it.

On the top row of blue "Tags" above, if you hover over it, it says Marquee, and if you look carefully, the little figure on the button moves.

Hilite what you want to move and click the button.

[You won't see it move until it's posted though].
I made it glow with one of the other buttons first.  If you do anything like colour, do marquee last and hilite all the html as well.

Sounds exciting.  The only Smiley I know was maths activities!

Best wishes

Perhaps I am a bit nearer.  The email I sent to the address they gave me (as above) bounced, so then I tried to register again using my work email address and name of business, ie. as an institution, using n/a for address, telephone number etc.  It then ACCEPTED me for a 2-week free trial starting now and sent me an email with log in and password (different words to what we have all been using).

In a rush of mad excitement I tried again to log in but it still doesn't work.  It is a different looking page, but I cannot get beyond the log in page.

I get the impression they are 'doing things' and it is not working very well right now.

Kooky

First your e-mail address, then the log in is virtual and the password books.  It seems to be the same for everyone.  If that doesn't work, just re-register, I did and that was fine.  I didn't get a message saying I was already registered or anything.

Hi

Ive just discovered this site and the line to Gale, I can get in with those details, keeps saying my email does not belong to an institution. Any tips ? I am tying to trace my irish family who settled in Liverpool, am certain the Gale may give me some more help!

Thanx

Hi, welcome to Rootschat!  :D :D

I suspect that since Lizzie posted that message, Gale have tightened up their 'free trial' access. I had a very long 'free trial' of several weeks but now cannot log in at all as myself. Now I get in through the Lancashire Library website.

Gale intend the archive to be accessed through libraries, colleges etc. You can get free access if your local library (or county library network) subscribe to Gale.

Anyone with a Lancashire Library membership card can access Gale at
   http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/onrl/

then click on one of the Newspaper links in the right hand  column.  You then have to enter the numbers from your library card barcode - and that's it! You're in, completely free.

You can join the library online, it says ANYONE can join, but that may mean, anyone that lives in Lancashire.

hope this helps!

Hi

My free trial stopped too and no reply to email.  I suspect they were inundated.

I think the library use must be spreading though, and there's no harm suggeting it if yours don't.  Ours (Cumbria) I'm told have got it too.  Just going to check it out this week!

I hope you get to use it.

Best wishes
