Title: Heathfield Chapel, Sussex -memorial?
Post by: LittleLondoner on Tuesday 01 July 08 12:43 BST (UK)
Hi,

Does anyone know the Heathfield Chapel in Sussex? Is it still there? My third great grandfather was the Reverend there and there is apparently a memorial to him outside. His name was Rev James Pert

If anyone had a picture of the chapel, or was able to take one of the memorial I would be so grateful  :D

Hi LittleLondoner

It most certainly is still there.  I pass it on my way home from work sometimes, I will see if I can organise to take my camera and get a picture of the chapel.  Do you know anything about the memorial - how big, front or back???

thanks for the info Toni - that's really helpful :D

Kerry, that would be great! I believe that both the memorial plaque and the grave are by the church entrance. His name was Reverend James Pert and I believe his wife was Evelyn or similar, but I have nothing else to go on yet. only a note from my grandmother to say that the congreagtion paid for a memorial plaque. If I can find any other info, i will post it on here.
Thank you so much for the offer; I would love to see it :)

Hi LittleLondener

Got a couple of shots of the Chapel this morning on the way to work, inbetween rain showers  :-\ If you send a private message with your email address I'll email them across to you.

Had a quick look for James Pert but couldn't see anything.  I need to go back at some point and have a more thorough look, and maybe when its not raining  ::) ::)

Will send to both of you.  One day when the sun is shining I'll try and get some that are a bit brighter, these are a bit dismal, but then maybe that suits a chapel  ::) ::)

little londoner. my grandfather was laurence (sometimes lawrence) who was yours? I can't explain why Rev James finished up in Heathfield, but it may be it was because there was no burial ground at the chapel in Flimwell I have pic of Flimwell which is now a house and the foundation stone containing Rev J's name is not visible. Just to tell you that I am v.v ill so I will do my best for you but......... !!

Oh, Doogie - I'm so sorry to hear that.
Thanks for your message. Our link goes Rev James Pert > his daughter Esther Naomi Pert m. James Benson Wilson in 1876. At the moment, that is the only info I have about the Pert family. It was passed on to my husband by his Grandmother, who was nee Wilson. So, I would be very grateful for any information you can manage as and when. I don't yet know anything about Flimwell either.
Sending you my very best wishes,
littlelondoner

little londoner, Sarah, hello,

My interest is with the Pert male lines, but over the years I've gathered a lot of bits and pieces of female lines, so I,ve asked my wife to have a rake around for you. If I don't have anything there is a family member in Canada who may be able to help you.
We have had a wonderful summer up here on the west coast but it's just about over now I think. Where are you?

Hi!
That would be fantastic, thank you so much. Do you know the name of the family member in Canada please? This roots chat thing is just amazing, isn't it!

When you say 'West Coast' are you in the UK? We are in Wiltshire, UK and our summer has been particularly rubbish! until today that is when we've had lovely sunshine all day - first time for months!! :)

Hi,
Yes I know. I've seen the forecasts. We are just about 10 miles south of Cape Wrath. This little corner has, somehow, kept it's head above the rain this year. The lochs and burns have been very low this year. We had a long period of dry warm and sunny weather in spring. Even the midges  have not been out force, they don't like dry sunny weather !

That might explain why I couldn't find him at Heathfield then Doogie  ::) ;D

Do you know whereabout the chapel in Flimwell was, I work in Flimwell and can't work out whereabout the old chapel was?

little londoner,
:) The chapel in question and regarding Rev james pert, IS THE PROVIDENCE CHAPEL IN FLIMWELL  :) NOT NOTE NOT  HEATHFIELD !!! The chapel in Flimwell of which he was the pastor is now a house. This house now occupied by the friend of a kind man who originally visited and seached, unsuccessfully, for the FOUNDATION STONE on which my direct ancestor's name was recorded
James was probably buried in Heathfield because there was no burial ground for his denomination in Flimwell He is recorded as a Dissident Preacher.

Hi Kerry!
I'm SO sorry to have sent you on a wild goose chase  :-[
I don't know the area at all...

Hi Doogie!
Thanks for the info - that's really interesting. Off to look up a bit more on 'dissident preachers' - not totally sure what that means?!  ???
If you are able, I'd love to see your tree...

Thats fine Little Londoner

I'm finding it very interesting, I imagine some of my Sussex ancestors listened to a few Dissident preachers, they were common round these parts.

I drove past the old chapel in Flimwell, the one in the link from Toni, it doesn't look much like the one in the photo from Doogie.  Are there two chapels in Flimwell Doogie?

If there was I didn't see it but then I didn't like to take my eyes off the road too quickly.  It looks like an old chapel I have to say, just looks a bit different from the one in Doogie's photo.

yes i agree the pictures don't look the same, the roadis nearer inthe roughwood picture and also the windows are different , the porch would have been there i suppose when it was a chapel, its not dismilar to the one at the church wherei live

I agree that the two photos are different. Obviously the brick building is a rebuild on the site of the original chapel. The Rev James would have been minister at the original. By 1901 the family had scattered.

yes the brick building was built in 1902 but still at that timea chapel and not a private dwelling.

I haven't got anything else to contribute. The chapel at which my ancester was minister, was the one in my photo and as far as I am concerned that is all there is to it :) :) Thanks for your interest everyone. 'little londoner' I will get back to you later

Sorry didn't mean to offend, just curious as to why the building I drive past most days didn't look like the building in the photo.  But if it a rebuild in 1902 that explains that! And therefore no point in me offering to take anymore photos.

Thank you.

was the new chapel built on the site of the old one? looks like there is a bit of difference in the distance from the road.

Doogie we are just trying to help sorry if you don't seeit that way and it sounds as if you don't the thread was started by Little Londoner on the subject of the chapel at Heathfield and our replies reflect this. your relative was a minster at the chapel in the photo you posted we appreciate this but that was not the subject of this thread.

and apparently the providence chapel at flimwell does still exist you can view it from the air on google maps.

, for the FOUNDATION STONE on which my direct ancestor's name was recorded
James was probably buried in Heathfield because there was no burial ground for his denomination in Flimwell He is recorded as a Dissident Preacher.
but you don't actually know that

I'm not a bit offended and did not want to offend anyone else, hence the smilies.

I just can't think of anything more that I can contribute. The Rev James is just another man in my family tree.

Incidentally Toni

Drove past the chapel on the way home on Wednesday and caught a glimpse of the name and it was either The Old Chapel or Ye Old Chapel  ;D
