Title: CATLIN Family - Redbourn Area
Post by: warby on Sunday 29 June 08 21:22 BST (UK)
Hi, I am trying to track a Daniel Catlin born 1835 Leverstock Green/ Hemel Hempstead. He appears ( as I hoped ) in the 1881 census in Redbourn married to Sarah Whitlock, but he seems not to exist before that...at least I am failing to find him.  Family rumour says he was born in Leverstock Green to John Catlin and Ann (Lawless). I am guessing they were non- conformists as the more recent generations were.
Does any one have any ideas how i move on? Is any one else after the same lot of Catlins?

In the 1871 census he appears at Church End, Redbourn - transcribed as 'Callin', with wife Sarah (28), daughter Sarah (7) and son William (2).  Ref: RG10 Piece 1377, Folio 55, Page 19.
Regards
Richard.

...and in 1851 he's a servant at Lovells End, Hemel Hempstead, to a Daniel Heath, who is a farmer of 100 acres.  Transcribed as 'Caslin'.  Ref: HO107, Piece 1715, Folio 206 Page 1.

And if you've good eyesight, there's a very faded image from the 1841 census showing a 6 year old 'Daniel Catling' living in Flaunden village:
George Catling, 40, Farmer
Elizabeth? Catling, 40
George, 12
Henry, 10
James, 8
Daniel, 6
Ref: HO107, Piece 441, Book 10

This looks like Daniel's marriage.

CATLIN, Daniel of Full Age TO  Sarah WHITLOCK of full age
Married - 11 May 1862
Redbourn, Herts
Husband's Father:   George CATLIN
Wife's Father:   Joseph WHITLOCK

I have found this baptism recorded in Bovingdon which is very near Hemel Hempstead for a Daniel CATLIN in 1835 whose father is George.

CATLIN, Daniel
Born - 17th Jan 1835
Baptised - 22 Mar 1835
Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England
Parents: George CATLIN & Elizabeth

This couple had the following children all baptised at Bovingdon

CATLING, George
B. 6 Mar 1828
Bap. 30 Mar 1828

CATLING, Elizabeth
B. 16 Dec 1829
Bap. 27 Dec 1829

CATLING, Henry
B. 15 Nov 1830
Bap. 2 Jan 1831

CATLING, James
Bap - 16 Feb 1833

CATLING, Thomas Want
B. 18 Apr 1842
Bap. 15 May 1842

CATLING, Sarah
B. 1 Aug 1844
Bap. 15 Sep 1844

This looks like the marriage between George and Elizabeth

CATLING, George TO Elizabeth WANT
Married - 23 Apr 1827
Bovingdon, Herts

Sadly there appear to be two Daniel born c 1835 as Daniel born Bovingdon is still living with parents George and Elizabeth in 1871 and married to an Emily, so cannot be Warby's who is already married to Sarah Whitlock by this census :(

How about this one in 1841? Indexed as Catlow

?Abbotts? Hemel Hempstead

George Catlin 35 Ag Lab
Sarah do 30
George do 13
John do 11
Willm do 8
Daniel do 6
James do 3
Joseph do 5mo
All Born in county

HO107/441/6/43 Pg13

Flaunden Daniel is at home with George and Elizabeth in 51 so looks like the servant Richard found in 51 is the Hemel Hempstead Daniel. Can't see him in 1861.

Well spotted Jan.

In that case this looks like Daniel's parents marriage.
