Title: Search funtion and using the browser back button
Post by: casalguidi on Saturday 22 January 05 18:46 GMT (UK)
Is there anyway that you can keep the search results without losing them each time you click on a hit?

Using the back button takes me back to "page expired" ???

Hi,

I do it slightly differently.  When I have a list of search results I keep that page open on the computer.  When I see the one I want to look at, I "right click" on it and from the pop up menu "left click" on "Open in New Window" .

This gives you a new box with the one result in to look at and keeps the original search list intact.

Hi,

Another way to do it is to press the shift key as you click on the link,  this also opens a new window.

Thanks to Berlin Bob for that tip,  it works elsewhere too.  ;D

Casalguidi,

The technical reason why we "expire" (or don't keep) search results is because it takes up a lot of RootsChat memory to save the results of every search I'm afraid - and if there is a lot of searching going on it can make things slower for everybody.  :-\   If we could afford a more powerful server, then we could do it.  ;)

Many thanks for your replies everybody.  At least I know it's not me then :D

Must try and remember the other options next time!

Thanks again

Casalguidi, thank you for asking the question. I was just about to ask for help with the same problem. It's been driving me mad for about a week, on freeBMD and IGI. A big thank you to everyone who answered.

Regards,
Carmela

If you want to find one of your own posts - press the "Advanced search" and put your name in the "by user" window

Plus of course your "Words"

I don't think you should be having that problem with IGI and freebmd.  Try clearing your internet history, cookies etc..

Hi Casalguidi,
Have already done things you suggested. It made no difference. At least now with the opening in a new window trick, I don't have to fill out the search form again and again. I would like to know what is causing this problem and fix it. Any more ideas? I have only basic computer knowledge.

Thanks,
Carmela

Sorry Carmela but I don't know what else to suggest.  I'm not that technical either but there are some people on here who are so I would hope that you might get another tip or two later.

Best wishes

Hiya,

Like I said before,

The technical reason why we "expire" (or don't keep) search results is because it takes up a lot of RootsChat memory to save the results of every search I'm afraid - and if there is a lot of searching going on it can make things slower for everybody.  Undecided   If we could afford a more powerful server, then we could do it.   ;)

The only real way round it is to "Open In New Window" by  Right-Clicking on each link in the search result.

If you'd like to donate to RootsChat using the donate button, then we'd be able to afford to keep everybody's search results for some time.  ;)

I thought Carmela and I were talking about freebmd and IGI not returning to search page.  This shouldn't be happening and I know there is a solution but not sure what it is.  I am aware that clearing the history etc. sometimes solves the problem but there must be a reason why it is happeing to her and I'm sure there are people out there who know how to sort it.
