In 1881, he states he was born Black heath Kent, and is living in Maynard Green

In 1891 he states he was born in Iden Sussex, still with wife and now extra children

You will find Henry's wife's birth cert on

GRO Births March quarter 1853
Shepherd  Mary Ann    Ticehurst  Fef 2b 72

Perhaps her father's name appears on that.

Hmm very difficult to read but I've made out some of it.

Samuel - can't make out the town but it ends in Field
Sarah born Winchelsea, Sussex
Henry - again very difficult to read
Martha  born Tenterden, Kent
Elizabeth born Beckley, sussex
and all the younger children were born in Heathfield, therefore they should be in the same place for the 1861 census.

Martha's baptism in Tenterden (1854) is on the IGI.

Found them transcribed as James

RG09 569 160 12
Blackdown, Heathfield
Samuel James, 33 head Besom maker, born not known
Sarah James, 30 wife, born Winchelsea, Sussex
Samuel James, son, 12, born Hawkhurst, Kent
Henry James, son, 10 born Wittersham, Kent and that fits with what I couldn't read on the 1871  ::)
Martha James, daughter, 7, born Tenterden, Kent
Abia James, son, 4 born Bickley, Sussex
Elizabeth James, daughter, 1 born Heathfield, Sussex

Now this is interesting

I have found a possible marriage for Samuel Jones but its after a couple of the children were born.

Samuel Jones and Sarah Day 1855 December quarter
District - Rye
volume - 2b
Page - 14

The reason I think it might be them is that the next door neighbours on the 1871 census are a Martha Day and her son John and his wife Charlotte.

Just had a search on the 1841 census and found the following:

H0107 1105 5/8 9
Ore, Hastings

There is a Day family which includes Martha Day age 35
son John age 7 and a daughter, Sarah age 10

Hi Kerry,
thanx for your research, I also noticed the Day family, and wondered if it was a maiden name....
I have now found the Jones' in 1841, but haven't tracked them down in 1851 yet.
The field you mentioned earlier is catsfield.
Once again, thanx for your help :)

Of course, yes Catsfield.  It looked like Tatsfield but there isn't one of those in Sussex  ::)

Glad to help.

Title: Re: Henry Jones c 1852 and Mary Ann

Hi
Just coming back to this bit of research and was going to order Mary Ann's birth
certificate, as suggested by Roy G earlier in the post....
Would anyone be able to find Mary Ann before she married, so I can be sure of
a father's name to have checked, so I get the right certificate, please.
Any sightings of Mary Ann greatly appreciated.
The spelling of Shephard, obviously varies as well.

many thanx :)

My husbands great grandfather was Henry Jones wife Mary Ann Sheppard. His Grandfather Charles Jones and his mother Elsie Mabel Jones, My husband is 80 years old and remembers his grandfather well, a rather larger than life character who played the squeeze box in return for a pint at the local. In sober times he joined the Salvation Army but often fell from grace and had to resign the pledge. He was married twice , his first wife died. He had one daughter and 2 sons and a step daughter by this marriage we do not think he had any children of his own by the second marriage but had step children. We would love to know more about the Jones side of the family and any relatives out there. Thank you Marjorie

Hi Majorie, it looks as if they could be one and the same.
Mary Ann Sheppard is my husbands great grandma, i finally tracked down the
details of her mother, after a lot of searching as they went under several names.
Can look out the details if you are interested.
Think you are able to pm me after a few posts, might be 3

best regards, Sandra

Yes any info would be most welcome. Told my husband that he shares a great granny with your husband. My husband was born in Hawkhurst Kent and I see Hawkhurst crops up in the birth places in the census so the family have not moved around a lot.  Any help much appreciated.

Regards
Marjorie.

Hi Majorie, I have sent you a pm, hopefully did this correctly, as a long time since I have sent one, might end up in your junk mail...
Mary Ann's mother was Sarah Ann Shepherd born c 1830, her parents were James and Diana nee Smedley.  Diana was born at sea, married James in Ninfield.

Sarah Ann Shepherd also known surnames Bacon and Porter she died 1909

Have some info I can email you in regard to Diana, who was quite a character  ;)
