Title: Hooe or Herstmonceux Parish Records - Cary
Post by: kerryb on Friday 27 June 08 11:32 BST (UK)
Hi

Does anyone have access to the parish records for Hooe or Herstmonceux?  I'm trying to find the baptism of Thomas Cary/Carey who was possibly born there around 1686 - that's a guess from a submitted record on the IGI.

He married Martha Delves in 1707 in Herstmonceux and they had several children all born and baptised in Hooe.

I have found Martha's baptism to Joseph and Mary 1684 in Herstmonceux.  There is always the chance he was born and baptised in Herstmonceux and they moved together to Hooe.

I have tried the Sussex OPC and the obvious sites with no success so wondered if anyone has access to parish records.  Otherwise it will have to wait till a trip to Lewes.

Thanks

Kerry

Thanks Nell  :D

One place off the list!

They do seem to be in Hooe for some generations after him, although I know that doesn't mean a thing  ::)

She married Samuel Harmer son of Samuel (ha ha) of Herstmonceux.  I found Phobe's grave at Ashburnham churchyard.  A church you should visit if you ever get the chance.

Hi Kerry,

My earliest known Carey ancestor was Thomas Cary/Carey who married Elizabeth Wenham at Hollington in 1733/4.  They raised their family at Hooe.  I have Thomas as being the son of Thomas Cary/Carey  and Martha Delves who had an adult baptism prior to his marriage to Elizabeth.   I was told by another Carey researcher some years ago that following Thomas senior's death Martha went to court with regard to some land left by her husband, I think named Redman's.  Thomas junior was later placed under the guardianship of a Thomas Paton.  When he became of age he inherited Redmans and sold it to in 1740 to a Thomas Page.

Regards
Joan

Hi Joan

Thomas and Elizabeth Wenham are the earliest Carey's I have in my tree and I am trying to get back a bit further.  Do you have the details of his adult baptism?

My line goes down through their son John who married into the Badcock family whose daughter Phoebe married into the Harmer's my paternal grandmother's family.

I shall have to do some digging re the land Redman's.

Thank you

Kerry

Hi,

Has anyone got confirmation of the birth/bap for Thomas Cary who married Martha Delves ?  Would it be possible if he was born out of Sussex .
Any help would be appreciated
