Hello,
I hope I have the correct list with which to request this look up.
I am researching my great, great grandfather William POW. William was transported to Tasmania in 1846. He was sentenced to 15 years for stealing. On his convict record it states his native place as "Near Bristol" and he was tried in Wells, Somerset.
He is listed as being married with one child, which is interesting as he remarried in Tasmania and started my family line.
From what I can make out from the writing he lists his family as
Wife - Mary
Father - William
Mother - Elizabeth
Brother - James
Sisters - Elizabeth, Martha and Eliza
If I have the correct list for requests, could someone please look up William POW for me?
Thank you in advance and please let me know if any further information is required - I don't have much more.
Helen (South Australia)

Thanks Sue,
Could be a match - reading the convict records is quite difficult, the writing is very stylised and because they are photocopies the image isn't as clear as it could be. Cannot make out Ann or Mary as a sister though. William was was 33 when he was tried at Wells, Somerset in 1845 so his DOB would be ABT 1812. James - on the list you sent is 20 in 1841 making his DOB 1821 - that is a big gap between children.
Do you know if I would be able to get a copy of William's conviction record from the Quarter Sessions at Wells Somerset? Not sure how to go about it.
Thanks Helen

You could try emailing the Record Office at Wells:-mailto:wells.cc@virgin.net
I`m still trying to track down William, no luck so far ???

From September 1844 until 1856, when it closed as a penal settlement, Norfolk Island was under the jurisdiction of the Tasmanian Government, and was staffed by the Tasmanian Convict Department. Throughout this period, male convicts were being transferred from there to Tasmania, as a result of their sentences there having expired; some had been sent there from Tasmania, others had been sent direct from Great Britain.
His conduct record has the following additional infomation
Came out on Mayda departed 29.8.1845 arrived Norfolk island 8.1.1846

I too have Nappy KING and William POW in my line through the marriage of Elizabeth POW to Thomas North CLARIDGE. I have done considerable added research in the UK, twice visited the Taunton Record Office and viewed the ACTUAL court depositions and copied them, plus the petitions for leniency and visited and photographed Chew Magna which is the little village around which the THREE offences occurred that landed him in firstly, Norfolk Island and then VDL. I have also purchased the book " A Drift of Derwent Ducks' by Trudy Mae Cowley who has researched each of the Irish convicts from the vessel 'Australasia' and details all the information on both Nappy and Kitty KING and Izod Darcy KING, and I would recommend its purchase. It is published by Research Tasmania 2005. Have also been to Clifden on the west coast of Ireland in search of the 'left behind sister' Eliza. This wasn't very fruitful as the Irish Records in Dublin were burned in the insurrection of 1922 and it left some questions unanswered, especially as the D'arcy family were the local 'bigwigs' in Clifden, and Nappy gave her child this as a second name.
I'm new to this chat room so am not sure how one proceeds to share information.

Hi Chrissy,
Thanks for your answer. I am finding it frustrating negotiating into the chat room and whilst you posted your E-Mail address to me I can't find it listed and I keep being told there is an error or I have exceeded my message limit.
I telephoned and left a message for Phitzy in SA hoping to have a conversation with her. My age is telling here and I still prefer some of the more conventional ways of communicating.
My E-Mail address is (*) (don't forget the second 'n'). I would like to correspond with you. I have most of what you have posted - but also pages and pages of the interesting 'stuff' before William landed in Oz
Best wishes - Janitor!
